Bring as much information to medical as possible; doctor's letters, etc. If you can get your Dr to say it'll not be a problem that will help.

They assess you purely on the form you fill in, what they see on the day and any other information you bring. If you don't bring it they can't assess it.

Would anyone know if there is any telephone number for the OHW or is it just email? I'm having trouble getting the GP to complete my forms in time even though they've had them for 2 weeks now.

I would put a bit pressure on the GP especially if you're paying for it.

Not sure what OHW could do as you need the forms for the medical unless they can reschedule.

Mine took ages to get back; finally got them off GP the day before medical. Real squeaky bum time :eek:

Thanks for reply. They rang me back last minute there to go down, talking about testing us LOL.

Last time i didn't have to pay but noticed a charge on their wall showing £60 for it. Here is hoping they are feeling generous!

Sounds like good advice, shouldn't be too hard for them to write a letter saying it won't be a problem since I haven't had any serious issues arise due to the condition.
Although I'm probably worrying over nothing as I believe things like this are covered in the disability discrimination act so I believe they have to consider me on merit alone. (According to what was outlined in the guidance for the 1509 campaign anyway, I may have misunderstood it)

It has probably been mentioned before but I can't seem to find it. But what does the medical test now consist of? Weight, height, blood or urine test? Hair test, and going through previous medical conditions, anything else?

On the first page lol

This was from 2008 but still valid. When you are done you get a free hair cut (drugs test). As I already had my hair cut I got treated to a little manscaping lol

No blood test.

Taken from OHW and summarised to answer some questions people always asked on the old thread

1.What information do I need to supply for the medical assessment?

You must complete your medical history questionaire, both carefully and honestly (this is sent out along with your medical date)

It has prompt or feeder questions which help you to give the detail needed in your answers.

Your GP who has access to your medical records needs to verify your answers and provide further information if required.

Additional information may include;
1. Additional letters from your GP about your condition
2. Letters or reports from medical specialists you might have attended
3. Letters or reports from other practitioners such as physiotherapists, chiropractors, osteopaths, and community psychiatric nurses can all be of relevance to your assessment.

2. What Happens if I arrive at my medical appointment with an incomplete medical history questionnaire?

It is your responsibilty to ensure your MHQ is completed. This must be undertaken before you arrive at your assessment and have been signed and verified by your GP.

IF IT IS DEEMED INCOMPLETE YOU WILL FORFEIT YOUR APPOINTMENT AND INCLUSION IN THE CURRENT RECRUITMENT CAMPAIGN

3.What Will the medical consist of?

A hearing test, eye sight test, BMI measurement,Lung capacity,blood pressure measurement, heart rate, and some movements to test flexibilty of all the joints including the knee and balance. Hands will also we looked at for skin problems.

The assessor will also have a conversation with you about additional information you provided and you will be expected to talk about the condition to him/her.

4. How do I know what additional information to provide?

If you have a history of a medical condition you should expand on your answer in the MHQ, if you have had to have contact with your GP or other specialists, this is when additional medical information is very important.
Discuss it when your GP and to ensure you have all the necessary letters or reports.

5. How long will my assessment take?

Approximately one hour. If you are late you will not be assessed.

6. Will I be told the result on the day?

No. The medical adviser undertaking your assessment are all fully qualified professionals, however they are not in a position to tell you your outcome.

Occupational health and welfare will write to you directly with the result.

note; A significant number of people need repeat urine or blood pressure measurements taken by their GP. If this happens you will be provided a letter explaining this to your GP. You should then have these repeated and sent back to OHW by you.

I just wore sweat pants and a jumper. Says on the email to wear loose sports clothes.

I went for track bottoms and top.
Not really necessary during mine but better than a suit.

I would say yes. I think if you have tattoos they might want to see them and depending on what's in your medical form they might want to see full range of movement etc.

As long as you can get your kit off easily it shouldn't be an issue.

The doctor carrying out your assessment will require you to undress down to your undergarments. Therefore please ensure you wear appropriate clothing, for example, loose sports clothing.

Nurse at mines told me they done away with the undressing part ages ago, but play it safe and wear loose clothing.

With the list of medication that needs to brought to medical, does that include the likes of vitamins etc?? How far back does the list need to go. I was on some pretty heavy pain killers 6 month ago. Should I list then or not?

The guy that does the drugs test wants EVERYTHING! Paracetamol, Lemsip, protein shakes, vitamins, EVERYTHING. You don't need quantities or dates just if you've taken them in last six months or so.

Edit: they're looking for misuse of drugs. So if you're taking something like Tramadol they will have a 'normal limit' if you're over then questions would be asked. Same for Paracetamol; taken occasionally is fine but wolfing them down daily will show up.

Doctor I think is only interested in what you're on now; name, dose, etc.

Delighted to say I have passed the medical! I was a bit worried about the eye test aspect but flew though it. So now it's back to twiddling my thumbs I guess. Oh, and if Stormont could get back to work and pass a budget maybe I'll only have to twiddle for 6 months as opposed to indefinitely!

Anyone hazard a guess as to why they wouldn't send someone in to see the doctor with a medical issue, to be failed

Depends on the issue but it's the Dr who makes the final call as to whether someone is operationally fit or not. Nurses carry out the other tests

I failed in my medical. I appealed with a report from one of the highest people in NI, within the field of my medical issue. Appeal was successful. What did they fail on you?

Hey everyone, I was wondering just how strict they are during the medical when it comes to BMI? I'm a bigger person but I'm fit and healthy and do a variety of training and sports. But because of my weight and height I would be classed as overweight even though I have a lowish body fat %. Would i fail just because of that or would they pass me when they see that I am in a healthy shape? Just want to know so I can make a change to my training routine from now on if I need to lose some weight. Thanks.

Your medical comes after the PCA (fitness test). So if you've passed the PCA you're half way there.

If you're clearly overweight that could be an issue but if just outside the range and otherwise fit and healthy you should be grand. As I'm sure you know already BMI isn't a sole factor when looking at whether someone is overweight.

It doesn't go into specifics in this campaign booklet which is a good sign that it's not as black and white as previous.

My BMI on medical was 29.9 he didn't stop to work it out it wasn't an issue. But there's plenty of time if it is going to be close to an issue, get working on it now.

But if bmi is over 30 then I believe they will then measure body fat percentage but it a bit unclear what the pass measurement is for that. But I'd say if you're bulk has decent muscle mass you'd be fine.

For the additional information needed for the medical forms do you need to bring a full medical history from your GP or just sections of it that relate to the questions?

If anyone could help me with the following issue with medical coming up soon..

I have looked about this thread to see anything on fractures when it comes to the medical questionnaire

Don't have the booklet to hand but when it asks about fractures it classify's this as 'conditions' like brittle bone disease etc.. these fractures are from few years ago and where a result of accidents causing no further implications once healed and no further treatment apart from time to heal.

Does this have to be declared or just leave it

Declare it but get a line from your GP that supports what you say just to be on the safe side
