Train services to and from Colbert Station are set to be disrupted throughout the month of June due to a major resignalling project on the railway lines.

Bus transfers will operate on all train services to/from Limerick’s Colbert Station from the evening of the June 4 to June 25 inclusive. The following service alterations will apply:

Bus transfers will be in operation for all services between Limerick and Limerick Junction, with onward train connections to/from Dublin and Cork
Bus transfers will be operation for all services between Limerick and Ennis with onward train connections to/from Galway
Bus transfers will be operation between Limerick and Birdhill with an onward train connection to/from Ballybrophy.
Bus transfers will depart Limerick 15 minutes earlier than the advertised train departure time
There will be a reduced service level to Sixmilebridge during this time.
Customers requiring assistance should contact Iarnród Éireann at least 24 hours in advance at 1850 366222.

A revised timetable, including bus transfers, will be in operation for the duration of these works. Please see www.irishrail.ie for details.

Members of the public should note that all lines remain live during these works, with test and maintenance trains operating. User operated level crossings should be used correctly and safely at all times.

Does anyone know why platform 3 has to be straightened?

It has a kink in the middle of it (that facilitated a locomotive run-round loop that's no longer needed) that creates a large gap from the train to the platform at the curves - safer to have a straight platform.

How is the work progressing with the signals? Will the signal box at the end of the platform be retained or demolished?

It is perhaps badly worded. Some trains between Limerick and Dublin do not serve Limerick Junction although I presume the fact that its the same stretch of line for the most part it applies to this as well. This may not be clear to passengers, especially tourists.

What is happening now with platforms 1 and 2 not available until mid November?

But there isn't any space unless they knock the signal box. Anyways, the signal is at the wall of the signal box so it couldn't be made longer.
Why didn't they do this last June?

Why are they extending platforms? Are trains going to be longer?

You can't do it all in one go without causing even more inconvenience for customers and yes the signal box will go.

The buffer stops in Limerick don't comply with current standards which IE use (P3 is back even to much), longer platforms are required to a move them back a couple of meters and longer ones will also allow extra operational flexibility.

Why wouldn't they have done all this when the station was closed in June?

They were managing the closure to keep it as short as possible, you see they can do it now and have the station operational. Why close for an extra few weeks and lose more passengers when there is no need?

Should improve the view down towards the tracks if the signal box is being removed.

Any update on how work is going?

I was in Limerick station at the weekend. The works look to be progressing well. It is strange seeing the platform without the signal box at the end. It also looks as if replaced the whole platform
