Good thing that taxi was there to save the light pole from getting hit.

I can't get over the amount of drivers being caught without insurance! Would it be safe to say that <15% of cars in this country are not insured?

Do many people here know, personally about friends or family who do it?

I do wonder if they include cars that have no NCT in those figures though. I'm sure your insurance is not valid if the car has no NCT

Once insured one only falls foul if for whatever reason and an issue occurs they are still insured but the insurer can pursue the insured for any expense or claim arising from issue.

They wouldn't be able to call them after hours.

Sure? I was stopped in Blanch one night around 1am on the way home from work and the Garda in question said my disc "looked dodgy" and he said to me that he was ringing the insurance company to confirm the policy, I was sat waiting on the N3 for a bout 20 minutes on him to get off the phone, was told evetything was fine and he apologised for the long wait.

I was on the receiving end of stuff like this for months one time. I eventually found out that the details are recorded on the pulse system.

Guard called in my reg over the radio, 2 minutes later they were able to tell what the car was, insurance expiry etc etc.

    All this before ANPR

I know what Pulse is and this stop was in the days before ANPR also, some Garda won't call in on Pulse as it's recorded that you're stopped and filed as such, even if it was an innocent stop. The Garda I was dealing with specifically said that he was calling a hot line number they have for it. I wouldn't question it only for I have also heard it a load of times back in the days of listening in on the scanner that they were ringing the insurance company. This was all hours of the night too.

Not 100% true. I know of more than one person that was done for no insurance even although they had a policy.

For example, A guy I worked with was done for no license/insurance on his motorbike. He was on a provisional license and a full power bike.

He told the insurance Co that it was restricted. Points and fine in court.

Another had changed the engine in his Civic and had not changed the logbook or informed the insurance Co that the new engine was more powerful.

A copper with a bit knowledge spotted it and took the car of him. Points and fine in court.

Countless more have been done for working as couriers/take away bikes/drivers and not having the right insurance.

I'd say it needs more than a wash and a set of tyres for the NCT.

That taxi driver is one of the reasons the roads are lethally covered in fuel. Obviously not a care in the world when they are filling up. Delighted to see him taken off the road.

you would think a taxi driver would have their car nice and clean as it would attract people to your car. If i seen that car, i wouldnt have entered it. In my head it would mean the driver is lazy and careless. My regular taxi driver i use washes his car weekly as he wants his customers to feel like he is a good driver who takes care of his car and customers

Is that due to meter tampering. Prague is the same many have a switch at gear stick and constantly change gear and drive like absolute maniacs.

Taxis have an annual NCT, if the tyres were down to the 1.6mm legal limit at the test how many miles would it have taken for them to get in to that condition?

Not sure if this counts but know of someone who is a learner driver (insured) but always drives alone. Don't know if that negates the insurance policy.

Dont think meters are dodgy. But you ll be doing some sight seeing if they know you are not from around.
Most drivers are also from a certain southern Mediterranean persuasion and driving people around might not their first source of income.
They were pretty close a few years ago to be officially labelled "criminal organisation"
There were some changes after that but they are still best to be avoided.

Thing is ... dodgy or not, a taxi in The Netherlands is a proper car. No 02 Octavia's in above condition to be found near a taxi stand.

In Cork when i'm home, i see taxi drivers pulling up in tyre depots that are known for selling part worn tyres for 30 quid a piece.

Has no affect on the policy at all

Depends on the terms of the insurance. Some insurance companies write it in the policy that when you hold a provisional licence you must gave a fully licensed driver with annual insurance cover to accompany you at all times."

There was a case in the High Court a few years back - provisional driver was stopped by Gardai. They were convicted of driving without a licence, but not convicted of having no insurance as it was not a specific term in their policy.

In fact there should be more coming that persons way than just car seized. A death trap of a taxi. They should get a break from taxiing imo.

Loads of them around, we just don't hear about it as often.

I'd like to know how far out the NCT was.
Also was the driver of the car at the time of the stop the owner or working as an employee.

    Neither is excusable.
