Apologies if there's already a thread but I couldn't find one.

Does anyone know how gory this movie is? Basically I don't have a problem with the "gore" in movies like Scream, Logan, etc. I.e. quick kills with blood.

But can't really handle torture porn, slow dismemberings, needles in the eye, that sort of stuff.

Anyone seen it can advise?

The parental guide on its IMDB listing will usually tell you the extent of the violence.

Doesn't seem to be torture porn from what I can see, but I'm open to correction.

It's violent but not outrageously so, definitely not torture porn level. I would say it is either on a par or slightly below your average mainstream slasher / horror film. Thankfully it's quite a bit better quality wise than your average mainstream slasher / horror film

I would say that this is more of a dark comedy than an outright horror movie. It’s a bit creepy at times and keeps you guessing just what the hell is going on.

Mostly it’s a very funny and entertaining film. The style of filmmaking reminded me of Wes Craven’s Scream or New Nightmare. Which is a good thing for me.

Well having seen it now I can assure everyone it's not at all gross and could only marginally be described as a horror IMO.

Decent movie but a bit more ridiculous than I was expecting.

Agreed.
Saw it as the surprise film at ADIFF. I had never heard of it, and obviously when it started I had no clue what I was watching.

Since I saw it, I've read a few rave reviews and it is absolutely coining it in the USA. Bit surprised really. For me, the comedy aspect didn't really gel with the tone of the rest of the film, and overall it came across as a shlocky B-movie. Enjoyable stuff, but no masterpiece.

It is one of those films that will unavoidably play better in the States. While there's much to appreciate on a more universal level, the sort of satirical and cultural targets its aims at are very clearly 'of the moment' in the US so it'll undoubtedly be received with some degree of bonus enthusiasm across the pond.

It's definitely not a masterpiece - it's not even the best recent film to tackle issues like race relations. Even with its comic under/overtones, it does adhere pretty closely to a genre template. The final act should come as little surprise to anyone.

Still, it's the playfulness that carries it through. I appreciated the tightrope walk between horror and farce, and its willingness to just casually cross over to one side or the other depending on the needs of the moment. It maintains the tension well considering the inherent and purposeful ridiculousness. The racial commentary is tackled with tongue very firmly in cheek, which is refreshing. Mostly, its thematic ideas prove to be a good fit for a horror-comedy - while I've seen pretty much all the individual elements dozens of times before, there's something to be said for having them all mashed up in one place for a change.

I saw this tonight and loved it! I meant it's pretty B-movie'ish but it's fantastic fun. Definately better than I was expecting.

Enjoyed the start of it but it just all felt a bit stretched for what it was.

There's enough material there for a sketch on SNL maybe... but as a film I feel it labours.

Didn't help that we were sitting behind about four or five racist fcuks who smuggled a load of Eddie Rockets food into the film.

My own experience was ruined by travellers in the cinema. I'm getting fairly sick of it, it cost the guts of €40 tonight for myself and the gf only to listen to some thick cünt giving commentary and farting incredibly loudly whenever he wanted to the cheers of his inbred friends.

Three students in front of me also couldn't stay off their phone for more than 30 seconds.

Id GLADLY pay more $ to watch this in a cinema without these people.

Limerick Odeon.

I go out of my way to go there instead of the omniplex as it's on the rathkeale side and it's near impossible avoid them there. I also go to as late a show as possible...

Probabaly one of the worst movies I've ever say through.

I ruined it by going full of hope and anticipation.

I didnt realise I was seeing a shticky, b movie with a plot so ridiculous it was pribabaly the only comedic part

Had the people at the screening that I was at been white... they'd have been turfed out for sure.. seen it happen many many times.. and rightfully so of course.

Seen three or four people go out to complain but nothing was done just security coming in and looking up at them and slinking off.

The plot of the film does play on racial tensions though.. and not in a way which I feel is responsible. I know it's a dark comedy and not Roots but lets not pretend this film does not have a political agenda.

I really enjoyed this. I love shlocky b-movie stuff, and I think this hit the mark well. Good balance of tension and laughs. The political themes are fairly front and centre, but it doesn't bog the film down.

Lots of funny little details

the girl eating the cereal and drinking the milk, the main guy saves himself by picking cotton

, and a good vibe of things making sense when you look back

the grandad got beat by jesse owens and he "almost got over it" and the groundskeeper sprinting around in the middle of the night, housekeeper fixing her hair to hide the scar, the girl didn't want the cop to see his ID because he was about to become a missing person

My girlfriend has been on about this for a while now and doesn't surprise me at all that its doing so well in American considering what it addresses.

From what ive seen and heard of it ive no interest what so ever and wont be going near it.

I dont give a toss about the ''subject'' and if i want to watch a horror film or a dark comedy ill watch one that gets rave reviews on what it has to offer as a film not some black mans political jab at white America.

Whats next Feminist horror and lgbt dark comedys........ :pac:

I missed most of those! I'm gonna watch this again. It was immensely enjoyable.

I loved Get Out. But then again I thoroughly enjoy horror comedy and b movies. It's definitely not going to be for everyone. In the screening I attended, there were a few audible gasps, followed by laughter.

Well if you're really looking for an lgbt dark comedy.....I suppose Nasty Baby fits that bill. It's about a hipster New York gay couple wanting their friend (Kristen Wiig) to be a surrogate mother for their baby. Things turns bad for them when they have to deal with a local, disturbed homeless man. Very black humour. I loved it.

And we had 'Prevenge' too which manages to be a dark comedy feminist horror film, which would be perfect for the poster.

Thought this was great, really fantastic Twilight Zone style feel to it as everything is laid out, and balances all the genres it crosses extremely well. One minute you're tense, even scared, the next laughing out loud - none of it ever feels out of sync or forced.

Glad I also didn't watch any trailers or read much about it before watching - for films of this type, it's by far the best way to go into them.

Enjoyed the film but it was too predictable. I hadn't seen the super spoilerific trailers that I just saw now as I looked for a visual reference to something in it. My main issue with finding it so predictable was because I was intrigued about what was making this film be heralded as 100% on RT and doing massive business in cinema and cast mentioning how hard it is to promote cause of spoilers.

Aside from that it was a fun watch. I loved the best mate. I want a sequel with just that guy. It was good to watch Alison Williams not as Marnie in Girls. The guy who played her brother came straight out of the Brad Pitt, 12 Monkeys school of acting. I'm curious to see what else Peele has up sleeve for future movies.

One last thing... Is it a bit too on the nose to

have Catherine Keener in it causing people to see what's going on in their bodies and have no control having starred in Being John Malkovich.

Got to see this last night and really enjoyed, a very self-assured film. A lot of elements in the execution reminded me of It Follows - a very well-laid-out narrative with no fat on it, with good performances across the board and a strong script that makes even the more out-there elements feel believable. The ways in which what the film calls "the african-american experience" inform the narrative and Chris's behaviour are very well-handled, and to me at least felt authentic, rather than the racial equivalent of the setup in a rape-revenge film like I Spit On Your Grave or Last House On The Left.

Narratively it's not something brand new, but it's a very deftly told and engaging spin on the type of story it deals with.

It was ingeresting seeing Caleb Landry Jones as a supporting role - I'm more used to seeing him in focal roles like Antiviral or Byzantium.
