so I was on the phone to them there and they said it only effects people who received a text message/ phone call or letter telling them that their phone bill will be increased! 😓😓

I took out a two year contract with phone in December. Can I cancel my contract without penalty?

No. They will insist you abide by the terms of the contract. It is a contract, after all, which you willingly entered into. Cancelling the contract means you will be liable to pay the full outstanding balance. It's similar if your paying for car insurance in monthly instalments, for example, and decide after three months or whenever that you want to change insurer. You are still obliged to pay the balance of the premium.

I've used 48 for last few years and they are grand. I pay €10 a month for 300 any network mobile minutes, 60 landline minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited whatsapp messages plus 1GB of data. I have wifi in work, bus and home so don't use much data when out and about. You can get a similar deal for €15 with 15GB of data.

Three are breaking the contract not you.

Wrong. Please stop spreading false information. You are entitled to cancel your contract without penalty as Three are breaking the terms of the agreed contract.

What they are doing does not constitute a breach of contract.

Then why on earth would they be letting so many posters out of their contracts without penalty??

The contract signed was for Eur X per month agreed by both parties. They now changed that so the original contract has been breached and as such you are legally entitled to leave. The very fact that people on this thread have already done so didn't make that clear to you and you still argue the opposite?

I've an old 3 account that I hardly use as I've two phones and was finding the coverage on 3 worse than Meteor (my other phone) so just gave a call and was a bit surprised too - no hard sell and they just popped it over to pre-pay and accepted it as 30-days notice.

You still end up with a final bill but, that's it.

can you definitely keep your number if you cancel? I've had the same number for 10+ years so I wouldn't be keen on changing it

Quickly now people. I'm due to run out my current contract in may. However I'm due an upgraded phone from last month. If I get the phone tomorrow will I be able to cancel if I get notice of the change after tomorrow?

Quickly now...I'm ready to rock here!!

Transfer to a three prepay account then when you have made up your mind what to do port your number off to whoever you want.

There are plenty of other ways of keeping your number but that is one of the easiest.

I would think if you bought it now, they would inform you of the new terms, so you would not be able to cancel without repercussions.

I am pay as you go with Three. I was happy with them up until the changes - Virgin Mobile Unlimited plan looks good for 25e a month, only a 5e extra with unlimited calls/texts/data per month.

I just cant figure out the contract part - it says a rolling 30 day contract. I cant see anywhere what the implications of leaving it would be ?! anyone know more about it?

oh just cancelled mine about 30 mins ago, agent was trying to be a little sneaky. The second tier of people i was put onto mentioned the contract changes and asked was it ok? I told them no it is not ok!
sorted, sim only'd and exited :)
also atm price says 29.59 on site, so told them thats the price i wanted, despite them saying it was 30 as of a few days from now. grand so, ill take the current price.
Its only 41 cents in the difference she said?
Well if doesnt matter to you, it matters to me!
29.59 but will change next month :)

WARNING: You need a new SIM if you're moving to prepay and you have to physically pick one up and do a sim swap within 30 days.

BECAUSE THEY HAVE CHANGED THE PLANS. NOT YOU.. You sign a contract with your limit, they have changed it. They loose..Not you.

Are there any networks that allow you to have multiple numbers on the same account?

Ideally, I'd like two numbers (business and personal).

I'm just wondering if Vodafone or Eir Business do that

So am I right in saying, if you haven't got the text yet you can't cancel?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 892 ✭✭✭BlinkingLights

For those who are thinking this is unfair :

They've effectively torn up the contract by changing the price plans.
Under EU consumer law, they can't do that and continue to hold you to the contract. They have to notify you and you have 30 days (as far as I remember) to contact them to refuse the new T&Cs, otherwise you're deemed to have accepted the changes.

Three have taken a calculated risk by doing this. They could have just allowed all the existing bill pay contracts to roll on until their end dates without making any changes and only implemented the new plans on renewal dates or on new sign ups.

Instead, they opted to change everyone's T&Cs and a % of customers will inevitably leave as a result.

You can't expect people to sign a contract that one party can change the T&Cs of at will without you being able to cancel. That would be utterly ridiculous and very unfair.

I'm not going to feel guilty about cancelling a contract with a Hong Kong mega corporation with 253,983 employees and revenues of US$54 billion a year. I'm pretty sure they know how business works.

I'm on the €40.66 plan which I think is increasing. So if I cancel this evening & switch to PAYG, does that mean I'll have no signal till I get a new sim?
    Sorry for all the questions!

Would yesterday be the last day you could take out a contract and then cancel? Are the changes taking effect today?

So i am on the 55 euro bill pay this is due to go up to 60 euro. If i ring and decline the new terms. What happens do i lose my phone and number or do they have to honor the original contract. I do not want the hassles of getting a new number etc

I have 2 contracts with 3 one was upgraded at Christmas and the other is in the middle of it a few months from upgrading anyway. Can I do this and just go into another contract with a new upgrade?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 892 ✭✭✭BlinkingLights

    Your choices are :

    From Three:
    1. Move to prepay (order a new SIM / pick one up in store and do a SIM swap within 30 days)

    2. Move to SIM only (they only have one plan on that now)

    Or, temporarily move to prepay:
Then port out to another network.

You may be able to port out immediately actually, but you will still get billed for your final bill. I wouldn't chance it myself as I'm not sure if that might invalidate the notice as this is an unusual situation.

You also might as well use up whatever includsive minutes and data you have this month as you'll be paying for it either way.

No you won't lose tor phone or number. You can go pay as you go or a SIM only contract which is 30 a month
