Here is the info - re: changing the Roaming bundles
The real reason for the contract changes

I signed a new contract with them only yesterday. Do you think I'd get away with cancelling and then keeping the phone?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,546 ✭✭✭jcd5971

I only upgraded a few months back to a new 24 month 60 euro ( i think) package and got the new iPhone 7, if I cancel now what happens the iPhone, I mean there's no way it's paid fully yet, plus I sold it and kept my own phone so I don't want to screw the guy who bought the phone.

I'd be looking to get out not so much as to screw three or get a new phone again, but as the reception in my area is so so so bad

I would imagine that 3's billpay decision team would see you broke contract at the time on t&c change. Then decline any further contract applications youll submit.

Incorrect, if a provider changes the T & C's, a subscriber is entitled to exit the contract without penalty. The rest of your post if I were cynical would suggest you work for 3 but I'm not a cynic. :-)

On Pat Kenny earlier, they were saying 3 are pulling a fast one over the EU roaming agreement due to come in this summer..

Apparently they (and other operators except Vodafone if I picked it up right) have found a loophole that means they won't be allowing data roaming like home as had been expected..

Per the correspondent, (Adrian Weckler iirc - was half listening as at work) this is a material change in your contract, allowing you to cancel, so if data roaming is important to you, time to switch...

an article in the indo explains it:

So what do you actually say when ringing up to cancel? Just that due to the price increase you want to break contract without penalty? What happens to your number, do you lose it?

Has anyone actually rang up today that was in contract and was able to cancel without penalty?
Called 30 mins ago, cancelled contract, switched to sim only for now and requested unlock of iphone SE. All of which was done with no fuss really. Thanks OP

I'm assuming this is consumer plans only? I've a SIM only business plan that doesn't seem to be affected?

The problem though is where to go if you want to cancel? Vodafone who are overpriced, have crap data caps, and shockingly bad customer care out of Egypt... or Meteor who have abysmal customer care and backoffice operations at home (source: I've been with both as well in the past!)

The real disgrace here is this line from the Independent link:
Under the benign gaze of the telecoms regulator Comreg, two out of three of Ireland's biggest mobile operators now openly say that their customers won't get the same amount of data when travelling abroad in the EU as they will at home.

If we had a regulator worth its name this (and this price hike) wouldn't be an issue, never mind the fact that they allowed 3 to buy O2 in the first place (and the often terrible coverage as a result) :(

Possibly (not sure if this is the case) but other networks might also see this as part of their credit checks and also decline an application based on that.

This isn't an issue. Mobile networks don't conduct credit checks, they merely carry out a risk assessment on contract applications. They assign points based on address, employment status and a few other things but they do not access credit ratings like a bank would and they do not share their information in clients with anyone else.

I got the impression from the indo article that all networks will be increasing prices. Is there any network that will give all you can eat 4g data for €25 a month (and with some calls and texts too).

    ****, that's amazing!

Do you need to reference the price increase?

Is there a time limit on this?
Yes, I said I saw the prices were going up on the website.

I recently went from sim only to contract and got a P9 , did it reluctantly as broadband with three is worse than awful in Kilkenny

I can just cancel (was going to go down the road of complaining of poor service etc) with ths and review options elsewhere ?

I'm with Vodaphone bill pay. They have no plans to increase their charges. I rang customer care and this was confirmed to me. But I'll be watching, 7 months left of my contract quite happy to get to leave early.

Got push back to say I'm on Three Open Basic Extra plan. I believe it's a cross over as I'm an ex O2 customer. Any idea on whether these are effected or not? I see no mention of it on the website.

Thank you ! Thank you ! Thank you ! to whomever discovered this. My contract is up in June and you have saved me at least €150.

    From Three site..

Top ups less than € 20.

All benefits linked to top ups less than € 20 will be retired, effective from 3rd April 2017.

The out of bundle rate for data used within the EU will increase from 24.6c per MB to € 1.01 per MB. The out of bundle rate for calls within the EU will increase by 3c to 38c per minute*.

Out of bundle rate, for data goes up 0.77¢ Why so much. Use data like air my hole, yeah my arsehole.

Ahhh that's different. When I signed up for my contract I think I was told it was a credit check although I could be totally wrong on that as it was 5 years ago :P

Over reaction much?? The recession must be back if "handing over an extra 48 euro per annum for no apparent benefit" is now seen as outlandish.

it's called a price hike. You're not being robbed.

Ha. If everybody had the same opinion as you, we'd be a collective bunch of suckers laughing off small price hikes like that.

"4euro? Is that the best you can do?!"

    No-one.

    And Three know this.

Even after the price increases they're still the cheapest network for data.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,414 ✭✭✭Tefral

Does this apply to Business Customers also?

True but going from a phone based plan to sim only could still work out cheaper for you.

How can somebody buy a phone last week, and cancel this week and get the phone unlocked and keep it for free? doesnt sound right to me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,634 ✭✭✭✭errlloyd

Does this only apply to original Three Customers and not to o2 customers? My friend was with o2 and he tried to cancel and they said he couldn't.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,124 ✭✭✭jonon9

The price hike is ridiculous I'm already paying €48 for classic flex max 350.

In that scenario, I imagine the cooling off period is applicable and you might not get to keep the phone, but if you've got a few months under your belt, hard to see how they can argue with it

Personally I think its disgraceful that Comreg allow phone /broadband/tv companies sign you up to 12/18 month contracts that they can vary the price at any time that suits them. Its hardly a fair and equitable contract. All the power is with the provider...surely its Comregs role to stop this one sided contract??

Maybe we should all complain to Comreg about this 3 price rise in specific, but also other providers under their remit in general.
