What's the alternative though? Chuck money at free agency? There's no one around and it's an expensive game, at best you get someone average and spend money that is desperately needed elsewhere... Or you go draft again, into a poor draft class and when we already basically have 2 rookies in the roster?

This team doesn't get turned around in one year, I hope we look long term for once.

We don't know about Hackenberg for certain, but I thought he was a terrible draft pick on the basis of his completion percentage at Penn and you'd think he would have gotten a start over the past few weeks if he was in any way, shape or form progressing:

Bottom line is that the team is obligated to put a decent QB out there. No QB, no team. Fitz had the best season of a Jets QB since Pennington last year and we spent the off season ****ing around with signing him back. Neither Petty nor Hackenberg seem anywhere near what is required. Geno and Fitz are done. For sure money needs to be spent in many places, but we also need to stop wasting picks and trying to be too smart for our own good.

The one positive of todays game....theres only one left

This is as bad an end to the season as I can remember. Bowles being ill and in hospital just makes it worse.

Personally remember the season that got us Keyshawn in the draft (had season tickets!), and Keyshawn's 1st (Rich Kotite burn in hell)

Anyway, a light read for Xmas day: http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/2016/12/8_fairly_easy_jets_cuts_that_would_create_54_milli.html#0

Complete ****show from beginning to end.

Worse losing to those and being surrounded by their fans in the woolshed!

The sniping in the dressingroom and Bowles' health can only point to his exit soon.

Petty gone on IR dose this mean we finally see Hack in an nfl jersey? Even if it is only from the sidelines!

Yeah he's absolutely right. I'd go one step further though and say Petty blatantly wasn't ready either and should have been protected also. You paid Fitz after you ****ed around in the offseason - let him take the losses. He's been paid well enough to.

    Bowles retained.

Error after error after error after error.

Fitzpatrick will be gone after this year. Smith will go, also. I doubt Marshall and/or Decker will be there next year, either. The 2016 season is toast. Why not put Hackenberg in the last game and see him play in a real game with the first offense? Hackenberg shined under O’Brien's pro style offense at PSU, but wasn’t a fit in Franklin’s offense. Hackenberg had similarities to Troy Aikman with O’Brien. Give the kid a chance and see what he can do.

Surprised Woody retained Bowles, TBH. Don’t see a lot of hope in the 2017 draft and doubt the Jets will even break .500 next year with Bowles. Maybe there's a good NFL coach whose contract ends after the 2017 season that would come on board.

Because Hackenberg clearly isn't ready, just as Petty isn't. The coaching staff know this. Just because you drafted someone high up, you don't need to force them onto the field. There is no magic either - if a guy is struggling day in and day out in practice he's not going to surprise you against an actual NFL defense - particularly one that's good against the pass.

Petty should never have been played, and I'm glad Hackenberg is being protected. Another offseason and preseason is the better opportunity to see if he can develop

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,175 ✭✭✭Amerika

The problem as I see it is if you never get a chance to run the 1st team offense, you'll never be 'ready.' And I don't see Bowles giving Hackenberg that chance in practice or preseason.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,781 ✭✭✭✭LuckyLloyd

Like you just need a cursory glance between the lines here: Hackenberg is obviously struggling majorly in practice. Smells like he's miles off where they'd hope he'd be. They must have felt Petty was a lot closer, but he's been atrocious on the field irrespective of the negative context.

where the hell has this Fitz been all season?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,114 ✭✭✭stecleary

twice stopped on 4&1 when FG was the better option. Bowels:mad:

Fitz checking out with a strong performance. Nice to win.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,644 ✭✭✭phatkev

unbeaten in 2017 and the holders of the number 6 draft pick I think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,644 ✭✭✭phatkev

So a whole host of coaches fired today including DL coach Pepper Johnson, OLB coach Mark Collins and DB coach Joe Danna. Based on this it seems to me that Bowles and Rodgers think the schemes are fine, but the players are just not doing the right thing, but I dont believe for a second that experienced players like Revis, Harris, Wilk, Skrine and Gilchrist cant understand the play they're meant to be running. I guess Bowles can't fire Rodgers as he's just running Bowles' scheme!

Gailey retired and the QB coach Kevin Patullo was fired. This is probably bad news for Hackenberg, never great for a young needy QB to have a turnstile at OC/QB coach.
RB coach Marcel Shipp also sacked because he was obviously the one that kept Powell in a ball and chains until week 13

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,175 ✭✭✭Amerika

Keeping Bowles while getting rid of five position coaches and allowing OC Chan Gailey to go into retirement makes no sense. Bowles lost the locker room this season and he looked clueless in his second year as head coach. The Jets need a new way of thinking everywhere... offense, defense and special teams, and I don’t think Bowles can deliver. Johnson should go off and be ambassador to the UK and give control to Maccagnan to choose the next head coach and rebuild the team.

New York Daily News reporting a Team source as saying 'Hackenberg can't throw into an ocean' and 'will never make it'.

We knew this like - as I said last week, it's obvious why he hasn't been considered for a start. Bust.

Hated the Hack pick at the time and as you say the signs for his future do not look good! But on the other hand I will never believe a single word that Metha writes or believe a word the comes from his un-named sources!

The Jets have a real problem with drafting QBs that "fit the build" or are "major projects", they need to give this up and start drafting QBs that can play football!

I'd rather a 5'11/6' QB who can throw a ball and read a defense as apposed to 6'4 prototypical QB who cant throw for sh1t!

Woody Johnson was asked about this and he said "it depends which ocean."

Not sure how that sounded in his head, but hardly a vote of confidence.

The obvious question is, assuming people don't want Fitzpatrick playing QB next year, what's the alternative solution:

    - Draft?
    - FA, who?
    - Geno?

Because Bryce Petty is simply not an option.

    That is hilarious -_-

Can one of our new coaches be a media coach next year? Our lot have a habit of saying some stupid stuff.

Depending on who we're cutting/trading Geno could be the best of a bad lot there...

I (next to zero knowledge) can't pick anything decent from the draft, and definitely nothing that could walk into a starting spot.

F/A all seems either poor quality, very expensive or too old. If we had some decent puzzle pieces you could take a flyer on someone but we're missing too much.

I'm sure the Bills don't trade and if they do it won't be to us but I really like Taylor if he comes up.

I think Tony Romo will either be a Jet or a Bronco next year.

Looks to me like Fitzpatrick will be the best option available, all things considered.

I wouldn't mind going after Tyrod, if the Bills are stupid enough to let him go

Well he's not good enough to be worth the $24m he's due should they retain him. That said, he's had a decent season - 9th in QBR and middle of the pack in DYAR and DVOA. I'd be happy to have him for more than Fitz was paid this year.

Pick up Mike Glennon in FA and draft Deshaun Watson if he falls to us in the 2nd round.
