You still think Bowles should stick with Fitzpatrick, who has zero chance of being back with the team next year? What does it honestly achieve?

Your probably correct that Petty isn't the answer but cut the chap some slack for now, he came in last night in a horrible situation. Let's give him the 4 games with 1st team reps before we regroup for next year.

QB aside, there are other massive issues pretty much in every posistion on this team, the first time there is a realistic chance Bowles is gone at the end of the year.

What an ugly game. I can’t be too hard on Bowles at this point. He inherited a bad team. He shored up what he was given with some aging good talent. It worked last year, but not this year. It’s a pretty safe bet Fritzpatrick and Smith will be gone after this season. Marshall and/or Decker will probably also go, as will Revis and Skrine. Bowles' future probably depends on how he drafts in 2017 and his decision on QB. The 2017 QB draft corps isn’t all that impressive in Trubisky, Kizer, and Watson. He’ll probably need to acquire a decent QB free agent or trade in the off-season to see if Petty and/or Hackenberg can progress into the Jets QB of the future... in a couple of years. Cousins, Hoyer, Romo, Glennon, or maybe even Jones (depending on what he does the next few weeks taking over for Roethlisberger), might be a good fit for the Jets in the short term.

This season is already lost. Bowles should play Petty and Hackenberg the rest of the season to see what they can do with the 1st offense in game situations.

He also said that he's going to "play the guys that want to play." It shouldn't have taken up until week 13 for him to come to this conclusion

I merely posted Petty's passing attempts. Generally had good protection, and had a number of very poor throws. And that's without looking at coaching level views of his available options.

If people want to ask the question about whether he's good enough, his field time thus far is a poor argument for same.

And yes - there are problems everywhere. The game was lost last night mainly due to a shambolic performance from the D. Not Petty, nor Fitzpatrick were to blame.

Petty starting the last 4 games is the obvious short term solution but he's not an NFL QB.

A lot of experience in camp with Mangold, Marshall and Revis but the performance last night was shocking. The body language, the slow start, the hits off the ball and the complete lack of preparation was worrying.

It is especially worrying after the very decent, competent against the patriots but that is what poor teams do. Raise their game against the top teams but should be playing that way every week.

Sunday at the 49ers should be a win but at this stage it is very hard to call. After all Jets just barely held on in Cleveland. It is conceivable that it could end 3-13.

Marshall not on Inside the NFL this week because of last night.

I don't think we can be hyper critical of Petty yet, he's been in difficult positions with very limited chances to shine. If at the end of these 4 games he hasn't shown some sort of potential then we can be worried. And he needs to be judged purely on offensive work, not results, I have zero faith that our D will turn anything around this season, but hopefully the young WRs will take the chance to shine, their preseason starts now really.

Some professional pride restored there in the second half. Powell was great. Good win.

His lack of touches this season has been criminal! Credit to Bowles as well for actually making some adjustments and not allowing players to quit at halftime. Solid effort in the second half.

Watching the Redskins winning meant I missed the first quarter before getting to the Jets bar here. 14-0 down after first quarter was not a good sign.

But full credit for the comeback and thought Petty got better as the game wore on. Ok he was sacked 6 times but he showed character going for the 2 pointer. Top marks for Powell too. Great engine in a very attritional game.

Huge roar for the winning TD. Good to hear!

Dolphins saturday is winnable as pressure is on them. Great kick off time too!

    Very positive start. 7-0

Petty to Anderson for the TD

And now Petty has been sacked and fumbles and recovered by Dolphins.

bar the fumble which he should have got rid of much quicker Petty has played pretty well so far, he's made a few nice throws and he seems to be going through his reads pretty well. Powell seems to have picked up where he left off last week. Defense didnt give away points on the first drive so I guess thats an improvement

Jaysus, awful decision and throw from Petty for that INT. Even if the defender hadn't got it there wasn't a Jet in sight

This 2nd quarter has been bad, real bad! It's taken so fecking long as well

Petty has been good overall and looks confident.

Anyone know if any bar in Dublin will be showing the Christmas Eve game?

Woolshed Shoveller I'd say. I'll be there anyway :D

In other news lads, 2016.....Matt Moore lighting us up, Todd Bowles is done, he's a clown!

    Embarrassing 3 TDs

Will woolshed be open that late Christmas Eve?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,644 ✭✭✭SHOVELLER

Petty took a pretty big hit and Fitz is on

    34-10 down

Himself and Chan should be shot just for keeping Powell on the bench for this long!! But I'm pretty sure Woody has said his jobs safe

I've ran out of things to say about this defense, I dont think anyone has a clue whats going on.

Is it just me or is Petty Mark Sanchez in disguise?? He had some excellent throws, but they'd be followed straight up by a boneheaded mistake. He really needs to learn when to get rid of the ball, he got crushed a few times last night because of it

Harsh on Petty there. Sanchez has played 4 full seasons as an NFL QB.

And speaking of Sanchez apparently if the Cowboys rest Prescott he'll be the starter tonight!

Also the Woolshed have confirmed they will be showing the Jets game Christmas Eve game along with all the other 6pm games.

Considering what Petty is (4th round project, starting only his 3rd ever game), and apart form the first INT, I thought he did fairly well.

The first 20-25 mins he looked good. He looked like something we could work on/with. He slightly under threw two passes downfield. One was a brilliant interception, and the other fell slightly behind Marshall.

There was a good few raw rookie mistakes (holding too long in the pocket/not throwing away) but for me, it was better than last week. Hopefully he is fit to continue improving each game until the end of the year.

His one big problem is reading the defense though

The O Line however is a joke. Started well, gave Petty time and he looked good. While some of the hits are Petty's own fault, they nearly got Petty killed. Not only the play where Petty got cut in half (and huge credit for stepping up and making the long throw knowing he was getting flattened) but there was 2-3 other plays where linemen allowed a rusher run through untouched.

Marshall dropped 2 passes that were inexcusable, but the real problem is defense. Moore had 2 50+ yard touchdowns. A guy who hasn't started a game in nearly 5 years made us look awful. Darron Lee's positioning is all over the place, Gilchrist is all heart and no skill, Revis is no heart.

Other than Leonard Williams, Enunwa and R Anderson, no other player has excelled.

Powell continues to look good in the last few weeks of a season (I really can't understand why we don't use him during the year), Hunter at RG looks good, and ASJ at TE is one I would really like to keep.

    I think Richardson gets traded.

I really hope Petty gives the Jets reason for thought at the end of the year. I don't think he will be a franchise guy, but I would hope he progresses enough that we can bring in an older QB to challenge him. Bring in Petty, Geno and another 1-2 QBs and have a legitimate competition. Cut 2, and keep Hack as no 3.

I would like Romo, but he would be in a wheelchair after preseason if he has to stand behind that line.

I thought Petty did very well until the O Line decided to stop giving a flying f**k. Petty showed some glimpses that he could be the no.1 next season.

Marshall may as well just not show up. Was awful last night. Anderson and Powell have been our best offensive players the last few weeks. Williams is our only gem on the defense.

To be honest, it was pretty awful and a few weeks ago I said I wouldn't be surprised if Gailey and Rodgers were sacked, but now I really wouldn't be surprised if Woody cuts Bowles too. But to be honest, I think the blame lies with McCagnan. Drafted poorly (bar Williams), let the Fitz contract saga get out of hand. Gives Fitz $12m.

At present, we'll have the 6th pick in the draft. Can't wait to see who we add to the D while negating the O!

Honestly think that what Petty has shown thus far is proof that he isn't an option for the starting job for next season. Being super positive, he could be retained as a relatively cheap 2nd / 3rd string who might be able to keep things ticking over in a strong context - i.e. a functioning winning team where he comes on in a relief capacity.

In a few weeks we could be a team without a Coach, a QB, our supposed best Defensive Player. It's going to be very hard to turn this bunch into contenders. We might be as far away as we ever were.

I wouldn't rule it out quite yet, the draft is barren for QBs and I can't see much interesting coming up in FA... Like you said the whole team has holes, might as well take next season to try and plug those; and if there aren't any QB options give petty the reins. We made one expensive FA mistake this year with Fitz, I'd like to be a bit more sure next time we spend big there.

Give Petty the reins? I don't see how looking to lose 10 plus games is something people are willing to settle for?

Petty has been miserable thus far, and has worse advanced statistical numbers than Fitz by a decent margin on much lower volume. He's rubbish.

Hope he is alright, he seems like a nice guy. He inherited an awful situation with the Jets. I think if he gets the time he will sort that mess out.

What's the alternative though? Chuck money at free agency? There's no one around and it's an expensive game, at best you get someone average and spend money that is desperately needed elsewhere... Or you go draft again, into a poor draft class and when we already basically have 2 rookies in the roster?

This team doesn't get turned around in one year, I hope we look long term for once.
