    The Irish Railway Developments blog has an update today on the report launched last week by Michael Ring TD, Minister for Rural Development.

    Rightly, the Minister is now seeking more action and less talk in terms of facilitating development in the West - building the infrastructure should now be matched with reviewing spatial development. High time the West moved to well thought out planning and provision and away from facilitating rural sprawl, for a start. This is the only way we will be able to break the cycle of rural decline.

    The west will never take responsibility for its own prosperity. It will never be politically acceptable in Castlebar to allow Westport to be built up never mind Galway or Sligo. Same goes up and down the province though this nonsense is sadly not even confined to the West.

    Galway is the capital of the the west build it up. Urbanisation is the on going trend across the western world the sooner Ireland accepts this reality the best
