Midlands, sold most in late June...wasn't over happy with the prices then either. poorer animals making close to or just over 1k, better quality up to 1200/1300.....weights ranging from 520kg up to 630kg

3.70kg seems to be the run of it in the factory but its been so long since I've went near one I don't know how to assess within what range the price for animals sent in would turn out to be.

wouldn't like to be depending on farming for a living at the moment at the scale I'm at.

**** it, Ill hold on to them for another while..., don't like giving them away and thats what I feel Id be doing right now......I have some shed space if the worst comes to the worst...might show them die hard over the christmas, tell the auctioneer they are bulmers cattle when they are being sold.

Get the finger out and join Bord Bia asap, you should be sorted for a preXmas finish, it would be a shame to have to sell them in the mart or the sell them to the factory as non assured...

I presuming that the heavier will hit 670 LW and there will be a base price of 3.9 pre Christmas. The lighter ones will hit that weight by mid January.

Mind you I could be wrong.

I think you will be wrong unfortunately Bass, I gave last year killing up to Xmas week waiting for a rise and when it came it was minimal... :-(

Would that be the shed where the lads doing the last check of the cattle at night time get 0-60 mph in the jeep down the feed passage?

He's putting up a shed 57 bays long, double pens back to back with an existing one, so you can work the numbers from there.

I think it will be ok this year as numbers may well be tighter than last year. Last year you finishers thinking they were Larry's best friend. He gave them a guaranteed 4.2/kg for August/September and October while the rest of us got 3.9-4/kg. They had loads of money in there pockets and bought cattle for housing and to slaughter at Christmas. They presumed that the price would be 4.2/kg it was 3.9/kg. Nobody filling sheds like that this year. I think there will be a lot of 4/kg around for Christmass.

Hard one to judge. Larry is killing under finished cattle now to depress the factory price.

Does this mean he'll be short of cattle to kill in 2 months?

    But,
the first of the surplus fr bulls from spring 2015 will be coming on stream after a second summer at grass around xmas. They were housed at the end of august, the steers will come on stream in feb-march, or maybe some will go to grass. There wouldn't have been a lot of them killed at u16 months last june.

Larry doesn't take too many bites out of stone walls. The only peaks and troughs in the market from now on will be dictated by the weather. Just my €0.02. Not to talk about brexit and weaker sterling.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

I think your as well off to keep them moving once their fit.

Fair expensive keeping big cattle from now on. If one goes over fat you get cleaned all together.

I'd say they calculated that by finishing them they would make a loss...so replace them with cheaper cattle which is more realistic to projected finish price

I would not consider 550-600kg cattle finished

Can you access a good 13-14% ration. Keep away from barley, a mix of maize, soya wheat and hulls costing 230/ton.

Why keep away from barley? Poor quality? Soya hulls only a 'filler' l always thought

Biggest issue at present is who will finish cattle this winter. Very strong store price at present. You would be off your rocker to buy cattle to finish this winter at present prices.

Quality of barley rhis year is very poor. No hulls are not a filler by themselves they have an ME of nearly 12, good barley is an ME of 13. they are an excellent feed at grass as they slow the rumen down.
    Angus heifers?

yes AA heifers and you can say the same for most but amacca was talking about HE bullocks

Id hope to have a few hex ready to finish by mid dec. If weather holds i will keep them out as long as possible as we have good ground. Will start to up meal slowly upto 6kg by then. They will be 21-22mts by then.

Will that pay you this year? Would you not consider getting them in in a fortnights time, getting them back to grass next March and killing next June?

She's had more than enough time to go back in calf, even if she goes in calf now she'll be mud fat by the time she calves next year and she's not a young cow. Would you not finish her and buy an in calf heifer that'll calve next March?

    Your dead right tanko thanks.
I don't have the time to fatten her so I will just sent her to the mart and take the hit.
Buy a nice in calf heifer.

I think your sums are wrong. 30kg wt gain in 51 days is 0.588 (say 0.6kg/day). That's not great.

Also bimectin has 66day withdrawal, but doubt she finished at that and lad that bought her will feed her on.

The extra €90 is a bonus, but it did have it's costs, dose, grass/fert, mart and haulage fees.

Yes actually your correct I done it arseways ha and I thinking this cow was great ha, bimectin was a cost alright but small enough cost, would of cost me the booking in fee in first mart €4 I think, I was going home with empty trailer anyway so wouldn't class that as a major cost, would of cost the same with or without her more or less, neighbour going to mart today brought her so that's a favour kind of thing, as for grass it's aftergrass that calves are on and aren't even going to get to graze out before housing, I know there all costs and I'm not saying it cost nothing to haul and keep her but better than selling for €760 today cos she was going anyway ha
