Maybe. I wouldnt be taking much notice of the weight though, 350kg sounds awful light but where they are coming out of they will do an unbelievable thrive in good land and they have the frames for it. I sold the same type of cattle to him a few years ago and I can see on icbf they all killed u's over 400kg and under 30 months.

What I am worried about next year as much as price is weight limits. if processors stop paying QA on over 400kg carcasses or maybe lower above 370kg it really tightens the amount of money these cattle can come into. after mart fees those bullocks stood 1050 and 1100 before transport. Allowing for a 400kg weight limit next year say they average 385kg DW@ 3.9/kg they will come into 1500 euro. If it drop to 3.6/kg they are back below 1400 euro. The reason I limit the weight to 385 is that if 400kgs is the max you will killing a bit before that weight.

The lad on the middle wouldn't have an Arse on him as good as d other 2? Lovely stock. You'd have to be happy?

I suppose it's all that could be expected at the moment. That's a bad pic of the middle lad, he's a bigger framed, longer animal than the other two but wouldnt be as shapey.

Nice stock but I'd have guessed you could have moved them on last spring at nearly the same margin.

True, but that's the way it is. They got a few nuts over the winter, were late getting out in the spring and it was a bad grass summer here with all the rain. I had them lads with the cows and they did a super heat detection job for me anyway.

I wish I live to see the day that cattle don't receive a premium for by how big their "Arse"'s are.
    Arse meat is tough meat.

I do not know how much you had out of them but if next year turns out anything like 2014 the next man will not have anything out of them. They will be standing him 1100/head by the time they land i his yard. No matter what way I do the sums he losing.

What would you pay for them and how much of a margin would you expect for each

What would you pay for them and how much of a margin would you expect for each

Ideally I would like a margin of 200/head after costs. Generally catle stay with me for 10-14 months. The costs to carry an animal from now to next July would be as follows.

From now to housing in mid November 80 days at grass at 50c/day=40 euro
    Winter 120 days at 1.3/day= 156
From early March until mid July on grass 120 days ar 50c/day= 60 euro
Ration For 40-50 days befre finish 3kgs/head/day = 30 euro
    Vet (10) Dosing (6) Transport (25) Mart fees(10) Slaughter fees (12) Mortality ( 15) Total=78 euro.
    Fixed costs= 50.

That gives a total of 384 euro. Now Generally if I manage to reduce the winter period by 5-7 days there is a 10 euro there, buy ration at less than 220/ton and keep it to 40 days there may be a 5 euro there, buy some cattle off farms and avoid mart fees 10 euro worth 2-4 euro/head, squeeze dosing, vet and keep mortality low mabe squeeze 5-6 euro there. However on mortality if you lose a 1200 euro bullock at 15/head he need to be spread over 80 bullocks. You will then have 2-3 in any year that fail to thrive.

So ideally between coming in price and slaughter price I need a gross margin of 570-600 euro. The real catcher at present is the outlook next year. Nearly 200K more cattle to kill than this year. It will be like 2014 base price maybe down near or below 3.5/kg. Tanko's bullocks are unlikly to finish over the winter even at that it is hard to see the base above 3.8/kg next spring. That would mean that bullocks grading U- on average will make 4.05/kg. Killing 370kgs will mean that they come into about 1500 euro.

Tanko's bullocks are averaging 440kgs for them to kill 370kgs DW you would need to get them to 680kgs so they need to gain 240kgs. 60-70kgs at grass, 70 days on silage and 3kgs/day 60-70kgs, 70-90 days on silage, straw and 6-10kgs of ration gaining 1.2-1.4kgs/day). Killing next March/April. What would the cost be.

Other choice is either carry over winter and kill next July at around 400kgs. The final way is to carry out to late next year and kill 450+ kgs. Problem with either of these options is that processors will more than likly discount heavy carcasses next year by 20-40c/kg. You night get away with 400kg carcass's in late June/early July but just might. So done well Tanko's bullocks will kill 400kgs might come into 1600 euro. Third option is not a viable option.

Tried my damnedest to work out a twist out of them in my system but it's humble. Based roughly from few u grade parthanaise lads last winter that went in to shed around 500kg. Have no scales so don't know what performance was at each stage but know what they were at slaughter in mid May. Around 750 on the hoof so

    Start €1100
    80 days grass 40
    Fixed. 50
    30days sil&3 kg. 50
    60days sil&6kg. 150
    60days sil 10kg. 180
    40 days ad lib&straw. 160
    €1530

    750kg @ 55%@ €4 €1650

Forgot slaughter fees mart fees transport vet and God forbid morality. Would concur with bass @ €78

They are/were fairly strong prices but there seem to be a lull coming on prices. They look a good square bunch at a guess from condition 450+kgs. A few weeks ago they could have made up to 1.8-1.9/kg. At present I think they have slackened to 1.7/kg and i think will drop more.

What are they worth I am not buying until cattle like that are at 1.4/kg with the outlook for next year. Would want to buy good HE cattle for 1.6/kg. If they are dearer than that I be leaving the shed empty of stores.

Most of those cattle there would be in the region of 550 kg i'd say. Good condition and good length in them.

Had a few year and a half bullocks in Ballinasloe ourselves on weds. Mostly Charolais / Lim. Weighed between 530 - 610 kg. Price in the region of €2.20 - 2.35 kg so most came in €1250 - €1350. Happy enough for cattle that got nothing but grass and silage and a shake of nuts at weaning time.
