The Irish government has given over 10 million to support Irish participation in the Rio Olympics. The Olympic council of Ireland also receive yearly funding from the Irish government, which is quite substantial in terms of their overall income. I don't care what the Olympic movement thinks intervention is needed.

They don't care that you don't care . Government intervention would just draw the ire of the international Olympic movement . They have stood up to a lot bigger fish than the Irish government .

Both themselves and FIFA very quick to act on any perceived interference

If there is one sport I can't stand it's handball. Looks like something a lad made up after a few pints.

I know it's difficult for them, but the goalkeepers always come across as absolutely useless in handball.

Dutch lad just anointed the track, with his face.

And some rolled up paper stuffed into the gash, and gaffertape to fix the track.

You know - I was going to say in my previous post please don't base your argument on the current ticket issue , I assumed you would be basing your argument on more that that .

Are you basing your argument on more than that ? As yet there is no connection with this fiasco and Hickey .

If I was bothered, I could get into it. I'm not. I think time will prove exactly what sort of person and operator Pat Hickey is. As it stands, I'm just looking forward to the track and field events tomorrow, and the rowers. You can continue posting your support for Hickey here.

Simone Biles is something else. Talk about domination.

    She was flawless!

I have noticed also that there seems to be a great comradery between all the gymnastics competitors . Its great to see. Hugging eachother after routines, consolling eachother and chatting among eachother.

Have been to competitions (not on this scale) but on a European level, and yes the comradery is brilliant. Just a great feeling really

McGyver would have been some gymnast the way he rolled under that garage door.

Look lads Pat Hickey has said everything is fine and the OCI will be cleared in due course. Is that not enough?

In other news Putin has said that his intentions for Ukraine are all good and he will be cleared of any Russian involvement in eastern ukraine.

Now that you mention it, Hickey was speaking up for Russia recently as well during the "will they, won't they" ban them for the Olympics.

He did not want Russia to be banned from the games.

It really is great to see. Commented in it the other day. Obviously some good people coaching them too

In that case all funding to the Olympic Council of Ireland should be withdrawn. A number to countries including the US don't receive government funding. It is clear that the current people involved in the Irish Olympic Committee are unfit to lead.

What has been the general opinion of Pat Hickey over the years? Do the media respect him? I want a general overall consensus, not one based on this scandal

I don't support Hickey at all - as a matter of fact I have very little time for him - but at least give him the benefit of due process .

Your not an athletics man by any chance are you ?

I’ve Been Waiting For This Day For ****ing Months” Zika Mosquito Says As Golf Begins

“FRANKLY there has been a lot of ****e being talked over the last few weeks and months and I’m just looking to put that behind now that the golf is starting. I’m ready to compete”.

The words of Buzz the mosquito, a Rio based parasite looking to make his mark on the 2016 games. You can appreciate where Buzz is coming from; he’s been slandered, defamed and his name has been dragged through the mud but now the talking is over.
“You just want to get out there and do what you do best as a virus carrying mosquito,” he added while repeatedly charging into a net in one of the bedrooms at the Olympic village.

There have been injunctions issued against leading golfers with McIlroy, Spieth and Day among their number, a campaign to restore Buzz’s good name is underway, but now all that is left to do is produce the goods.

“Oh trust me, my plan is to get out and really put myself about the place. The time for talking is done, the time for ****ing **** up has begun,” a determined Buzz added, admitting the golf represented his best chance of success at the games.
“The indoor events don’t agree with me, I’m best operating out in the open, and in fairness the golf course is immaculate. Who wouldn’t want to perform in those conditions?”

Buzz can be seen at the golfing event in Rio today.

Some sports are exceptionally well run and others less so , you can't tar them all with the same brush

What difference would that make? There is a big team out there representing Ireland.

based on what though. Disregarding this, what scandals have surrounded the running of the OCI. That is a query by the way, not questioning your opinion. Im just interested is the OCI respected. And if not, why not?

All this talk of streamlining technology in the bikes and skinsuits on the track, and then Team GBs Bradly Wiggins turns up with a load of facial fluff!

    :D

Wiggins thinks he's Noel Gallagher on wheels. He wishes

Going to play GB in the final.

Some achievement for them considering this is the first time they've competed as one nation in Sevens.
haven't they won the world cup a few times and various other top Rugby 7s competition though?? They were favourites going into the tournament.
    England have, not GB.

The team only got together 10 weeks ago. Most of the other nations are specialised sevens sides who play together on the the sevens circuit throughout the year. They'd be much more used to each other and settled as teams.

Sorry, I was referring to Fiji, not GB. Thats who I thought people were praising. I only copped on to the "3 nations bit then!"

It's a shame we don't have an O'Rourke, or an O'Sullivan, or a McKiernan taking part in T&F. The best we can hope for are a semi final place, which is a huge achievement in itself.

Because athletics have always opposed Hickey , and that from day 1 . There are some in the athletics family that believe as it is The Olympic sport the IOC President should be from that code .
