Newspaper review with Joe, Eoin Butler & Luke Fitzgerald.

Joe Molloy brings up Stephen Kenny's ability to improve players based on Eamon Sweeney's piece in the SINDO.

Butler & Fitzgerald can't comment as they know nothing on about the league.

In the same article Sweeney talks about Ireland support at the Euros. He makes the point going that you don't have to serenade a nun or change a tyre to be a good supporter. Heading to a LOI game is just as laudable in his eyes.

Butler admits he is guilty of this, but goes on to give his 2 cents on the league based on never attending a game. Based on this he tells us that the quality is poor and the fans are full of louts.

In fairness Joe Molloy pulled him up on this but it shows what clubs are up against in attracting new supporters.

Well said, I found it quite bizarre that in almost the same breath he expressed the disdain he had for LOI fans and their loutish behaviour as a reason for not going to games when moments before he said he had never been to a game.

On the other hand I think Sweenys cheap shots at the admittedly tiresome green army fans banter brigade is also fairly unnecessary and irelevant. I was born into a GAA obsessed household in the 70's and never had much exposure to any LOI and therefore never had that crucial early childhood passion any for soccer club Irish or English, but at the same time Irish international football exploded into a golden era and I am hooked ever since, I will get to Irish internationals when I can, 2 world cups, 2 European championships and qualifiers when the stadium was a third full in the not so long ago dark days. I think there's a hell of a lot of supporters like me who earn the right not tone regarded as fair weather or whatever you might call it. That said, I would have nothing but the utmost respect for those that attend and support LOI...what is not mentioned very often is that a lot of LOI fans have a very valid disdain for the FAI legacy issues and Delaney and his father in particular and a lot of them do not attend Irish internationals out of protest which is fair enough, but Sweeny should acknowledge this much also. The divide is very obvious when at internationals not one LOI club flag is represented on the tricolour or elsewhere.

Butler should also note, as a GAA fan I have seen a lot more disgraceful behaviour from GAA fans in grounds than I have ever seen at a soccer match, his holier than thou GAA fan image that he was trying to put across was pathetic.

Cockfighting? This sounds like the Donal Fallon segment on NT Breakfast. I don't mind switching it up a bit but this is probably a bit too far for me.

Yep. Cockfighting. Must be a slow news week. Real slow. I mean, it's not like the Olympics is starting next week.

I didn't hear the piece last night but I think every now and again a piece like that is welcome.

The one he did on Real Tennis a month or two back was interesting I thought.

Really enjoyed the David Gillick interview, very honest piece. I know people get solace when others share their journeys especially the dark days, but I worry when people do it in the public eye. Maybe if more were open it would help but it always leaves me a little worried for the person that maybe they are oversharing during a good day that might haunt them on a bad day. Either way worth a listen if you missed it.

Another atrocious Off The Ball Saturday Panel. All it was missing was David Brady and his observations on PEDs.

Another soft interview with Philly McMahon. That usual euphemism "playing on the edge" to justify his foul play. Something is either illegal or it's not illegal, and poking somebody in the eye IS illegal. It only depends on whether the administrators are of the mind to punish a Dublin player or let him off. Same as Connolly, he can do what he likes.

I was just listening to Gary O'Toole in car and saying "Jaysus that's good, I must download that to listen to later". :o

O'Toole was the best by a mile - as you would expect from someone as media savvy and experienced as him; but even he got caught up in the "idealism" (and I say that deliberately in quotation marks for emphasis) chat of the Olympics and eventually the bashing of sports they (the panel) didn't see as being Olympic-worthy. It was very poorly moderated, and included one complete nonsensical statement which went completely unchallenged by all of the panel incl. the host which went something along the lines of

"no country has suffered more at the hands of drug cheats in major sporting events than Ireland"

This was said more than once btw! UTTER NONSENSE. We've had a few high-profile (in this country only btw) athletes than have lost medals where obvious cheating (in retrospect) has taken place but to say no county in the world has lost medals like we have to drug cheats is utter nonsense and complete exaggeration.

When he mentioned that he was on TV at the time of the Atlanta Olympics, I was wondering what exactly he was saying as she was standing on the podium. I know that there were journalists here, Tom Humphries I think, that were questioning her achievements, but I dont remember anybody on the TV questioning her... ?

From memory (and I may be wrong on this - and I'm not a fan of O'Toole) I do think he aluded to the fact that there was more to the story than met the eye at the time. Obviously he stopped way short of calling her a cheat (libel laws alone would have ensured that) but I do recall him being shall we say overjoyed at the result. It's 20 years ago though so I could be way off on that.

You are correct Peter. I remember reading a interview with Bill O'Herilihy about it who said off camera that O'Toole was skeptical about Smith. I was only 10 but I do remember thinking he wasn't leading support for her at the time. He certainly didn't accuse her of cheating right away.

    F*ckin best of shows.

Is there not about a million lads in team OTB these days? Is there no one to cover Bank Holidays?

And do they not already do best of filler on Fridays?

Edit: Eating my words to a degree here. I love this interview with the old Wexford lads.

Gilroy to Stephen Kenny: What are you reading, who inspires you outside the world of sport?

Kenny, who obviously is a smart and I'm sure a well read man, is obviously pretty busy and sounded a bit dumbfounded. What an up your own arse question.

Gilroy is the Ray D'arcy of sports radio. I'll take Joe Molloy anyday.

At least the olympics will give them some material over the next while.

Gilroy can be a pain in the arse. He always reminds me of those days when you'd have a few pints with a few lads, and gilroy is the smart arse who has an opinion on everything, and thinks he's hilarious but just gets on your nerves.
He ruins the show for me when he's on.

I wouldn't quite say ruins the show. He has his quirks, the way he raises his voice and says good luck to a guest makes me think he wasn't actually just in a conversation with them. I always find that a bit weird. Could be just me though.

I do prefer Joe, generally speaking.

Re Gilroy: Didnt anybody her the nauseating interview with Graham Henry. He's not usually that much of an ass kisser. Heaping this huge praise on to Graham Henry for "bring NZ over the line" in 2011, when the main man who brought NZ across the line was Craig Joubert. Joubert simply didnt have the b*lls to give France any one of the four penalties they deserved in the final quarter of the game. They absolutely choked and the ref gave them the trophy.

Since football podcast has been dropped, OTB is out of my orbit. Do get to listen on a the weekend though.

That Sunday papers review was a hard listen.

Gary O'Toole was as bland as usual but his compatriot Enda McNulty was unbearable in his positivity.

He reminded me of Dave Chapplelles legendary comeback routine on the book "The Secret"

I worry that the only thing special about it will be it's unwhelming-ness.
Given that they have been running with stand in presenters, I'd guess they are announcing a permanent replacement for Woolly. I'm guessing Brian O'Driscoll.

Would he do it every night though? I was racking my brains thinking who has retired from rugby/soccer this summer that they are adding to the panel.

That Sunday papers review was a hard listen.

Only got to it last night, its usually one of my favourite slots, it was shockingly bad. Don't know what was worse, Gary O'Toole or Endas pronunciation. I was twitching by the time he got to 'play like their HUR is on Fire', didn't listen to the end.
