Anyone know the scéal about the re-signalling that was being implemented around the city stretch of line? Was suppose to really improves the services going through Connolly but their website is pretty vague in terms of the timeline; thought it was suppose to be finished around now or fairly soon?

I know the main aim is to increase the throughput across the Loop Line Bridge to 20 trains per hour, from the 12 that it currently is.

I'm not sure what the current delivery date is. I imagine that - as is usual with these projects, especially in Ireland it seems, there will have been so many cost revisions and deadline extensions that the whole project will be delivered 'on time and under budget' or 'on budget and ahead of time'. One of those.

The ninth stage of the current phase is due to happen this coming weekend which will see the turnback platform at Grand Canal Dock introduced.

The works have been ongoing since Spring of last year, but resignalling and redesigning one of the busiest stretches of railway line in the country is not something that can be done quickly unless you go for a complete closure. Keeping the existing railway operational while carrying out these works is no mean feat.

There was a 3rd platform at GCD when it opened in 2001. Then it was ripped out, and now its being rebuilt. Why was it closed to begin with?

    It was never "open".

It was only ever in use and signalled as a siding. It could not be used for trains in service.

Funding issues from government prevented the station being used as a three platform station.

Regardless, the change in layout will make using the station as a turnback much easier.
