That's shocking, have six red lim yearling bullocks to go around 400kg, I think I'll be kicking myself they weren't cashed in a month ago.

TBH with the way the processors are pulling the prices the store/weanling price will be under pressure from now on. Too many of us remember the winter of 2013/2014 when factory's punished lads with bulls. Bulls have never recovered there glamour since and are always under presssure when factory's have a good intake of stock.

I think bullocks will get a right hit too local factory quoting 3.9/kg at present it is unlikly to turn around again this year. Ration prices are not helping we are paying 15-30/ton more than we should considering grain prices. Too many lads are working on miller credit.

I'd have brought them two heavy ones home and finish them in shed u16mts. You'd have 400kg at least dw on the grid for 3.65 with qa and in spec you'd have doubled what you got.

I expect that the weight limit before the year is out will be 350-380kgs and flat pricing above that with stepped penelty's every 20-40kgs.

Your lucky you've the option I'm locked up here because of a heifer I bought in two months ago, I've all spring born weanlings and a couple of Autumn born and a batch of friesain screws that I can't sell that I don't have housing for. I'm drawing out cows for finishing and anything within an asses roar of finishing just to try and make some space.

True and those two would be that by Chrisrmas but might not have the cover for the grid. Will be a balancing act for next few months!

Just in from carnaross mart. Decent trade for both bulls and heifers. 1st bull in the ring a u grade Charolais 330 made 1010 (306 per kg) in general R grade types were from 2.10 to 2.30. Sold 6 heifers our selves. 4 blues and 2 lims avg weight 435 avg price 2.49/kg. delighted. Was reading this thread last night and came to the conclusion that I'd be happy with 2.20 .

Enniscorthy Mart small today. Vastly improved trade. Apart from maybe cows and strong stores and fit cattle.. Plainer smaller dairy cross stores bringing up to 2.30 a kg. continental cattle bringing up to 2.90 a kg.. Farmer buys in pounds when factories are buying with pennies

Do you run a blue bull ? Is 15% CD a bit much for a bull to let with the cows I wonder ?I was thinking of letti g one with the cows this year chickened out !

No we use AI blue. Wouldn't hesitate to put s blue with cows as long as all the once calves heifers were removed. Blue is ok on more mature cows I think.

Anyone at any marts this week. What sort of value/trade is out there?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,063 ✭✭✭restive

I popped into Roscommon Mart at lunchtime. A lot of cattle there for this time of year.

Good Charolais bullocks approx 500kg going €2.50 to €2.60.

Charolais bullock 377kg went for €890.

Small bullocks being offered €2.25 a kg were withdrawn.

Value in lighter stock so. With all the uncertainty hard to know what to think. The 500kg lads back €80 on this week last year. What age was the 377kg animal and was he a good sort?

Hard to know if the light bullock was value. The heavier bullock will be gone in general befor the end of the year. The lighter bullock will not go until next year. What will the difference in price be for cattle sold from now until the end of the year and next year. Also more important will weight limits effect cattle.

The 500kg animal could be finished before the end of the year and lads may be betting that cattle will make at or stronger than present base. The 380kg animal will not kill until March/April what will the demand be then and will there be weight limits in place. will you be limited with a weight limit of 400kg or less.

I hadn't the bullocks done too great in fairness but nice stretchy shapey lads just weighing nothing, would hardly have paid to give them a good do at the price I got for them anyway. Local fella bought them and he buys a lot of ours year in year out so they must do well for him. Cows a hard sell yesterday, was surprised to get that for her the way the trade was going to be honest.

There is a touch in the cow for someone cannot see any profit in the bullocks even if the price is at present level next year.

Maybe. I wouldnt be taking much notice of the weight though, 350kg sounds awful light but where they are coming out of they will do an unbelievable thrive in good land and they have the frames for it. I sold the same type of cattle to him a few years ago and I can see on icbf they all killed u's over 400kg and under 30 months.
