Rooney played midfield for utd for most of the season. Won an fa cup medal, and played in a deep lying midfield role in the semis against everton, and got motm that game. But because he had a poor tournament, he cant play midfield???

Has Giles advocated that Rooney play in midfield for England (not Manchester United or his five-a-side charity team), and how has Rooney played in midfield for England?

Is Parkinson gone from Newstalk or on holidays? Thought he was back at the studio while the lads were in France but not heard him do any live GA games over the last few weeks, unless I missed him when he was on.

I know he's like marmite but I really miss Parkinson, the show is not the same at all without him.

Rooney's body mass alone should be enough tell anyone that this not a man who can play midfield for a top team.

He also doesnt seem to realise when NOT to play a particular pass, and to just hoof it up the wing. Gave away the free for Bales free kick, and numerous other balls in dangerous situations by not having the instinct to just get the ball away.

I do feel a bit sorry for Rooney though. Every championship since he's started playing for England they have had hopes of winning, and all of the weight of those expectations have been placed on his shoulders. And he seems to carry that weight every nervous, stressed filled microsecond that he is on the pitch. He did finish the penalty off well though, so he certainly deserves credit for that.

The crappy quiz is rubbish. Like, it's total rubbish.

But I think I actually like it. Bit o craic, like.

Soccer forum for that old rubbish mate.

Is that not the idea of it?
It morphed quickly into the parody Crappy Quiz™ from a genuine let the hair down end of week contest after it rapidly emerged no one (with the possible exception of Cian) had any broad sports knowledge.

It's an ad for OTB incompetence that I immediately turn off ... don't get the craic thing at all.

Just trying to deny your serial complainin' nature Ol' Donie ... don't carp in that closet no more ;)

Yeah it's amazing the difference. I wouldnt have thought it would be so noticeable. And even the token guests that they have brought in come across like professors of anthropology. You might see this ad in the newspaper next week "Wanted: Man with difficult, stubborn nature. Must have own ingrained opinions and not be willing to let facts get in the way of changing those opinions. Being an Everton supporter would be a distinct advantage"

I have to agree with you on this. I've said it before, but the quiz is just a terrible piece of radio. The few times I've heard it, Ger sounds bored, the guys seem to get genuinely frustrated with each other and the questions, they're are talking over each other... It just comes across like a bad student radio production as opposed to paid professionals.

The central idea of it, a laid back having a laugh quiz on a Friday evening is a very good one, but they just don't seem to be able to pull it off.

    All IMO of course.

I listened to the Saturday Panel again today.
Here's an idea Newstalk, why don't you just rename it

    "David Brady Talks Shoyte"

For a fella who's either 39 or 40 (I'm guessing this given something he said today) his thoughts on almost all aspects covered are so backward if I didn't know better I'd assume he was in his 70s and one of "when I was your age...." Or "In my day...." brigade.Today confirmed the suspicion I had of him when they were talking about PEDs a few weeks ago.and he tries so hard to be funny. It's just drivel.

Brady can be hard to listen too at times but Moyles' contribution is always worth listening too. I would rate him highly.

Not sure, I wouldn't have him on myself but obviously someone likes him. Mossy Quinn very good also when he is on.

I can't get to the Off button quick enough when the Crappy Quiz rears its ugly head. In my opinion it's one of the worst things on Irish radio.

I never thought I'd say it but the show has definitely gone downhill since Parkinson left. I'm still no fan of Parkinson and would not like to see him return but I can see the purpose he served. None of the remaining members of the team have any particular personality as such and perhaps that is why they worshipped at the altar of Woolly. He was the only one of them who had the cojones to say outrageous things, even if they didn't have any particular basis in fact. The show badly needs somebody to come in who sees things differently and doesn't care what others think. Surely there has to be somebody out there who's a better broadcaster and has the ability to think outside the box.

I agree on the crappy quiz being crap.

I heard a bit of the Sunday paper review today and thought mossy Quinn was very good.
He's very articulate and can bring in a few anecdotes from his playing days, today he was on about penalties from his own playing experiences, in light of zazas messing last night for Italy.

He's not the Parkinson personality that could start an argument in an empty room, but he'd be a good stopgap for a few months. He's not afraid to give his opinion, it's just it won't be outrageous.

David Brady tries too hard to be controversial or outrageous or funny. I hope to god they don't bring him in. That'd be the final nail for me.

Simple question - Why isn't there a 24 hour Sports Radio station in Ireland? Talksport, but better.

Market is too small for commercial stations to do it. They couldn't generate enough in advertising to pay the presenters and contributors. Ireland is roughly the size of Manchester when you think about it.........we forget that sometimes.......

Good point. I would love to see it done though in the future. Would cost more to produce I imagine, I just think Ireland needs it, we are a small nation but bursting with Sports around us. If it were me at first as a tester I'd would love to set up a pop up station, 24 hour sports for two weeks, include the big draws of sports media to present and do it all for charity. At the same time see what reception is like. Or maybe those days of setting up radio stations are gone and it's people like Second Captains that have gotten into the correct platform. Podcasting.

When I first discovered OTB a decade ago I thought 3 hours of a sport on radio a day was too much never mind a whole day of it.

With all due respect but there isn't a hope in hell that there is a market for this in a country of our size.
What it would serve to do is dramatically dilute the content as it is now spread over 24 hrs rather than just 3 per day in the case of OTB.

Your proposal is similar to one tried 20 years ago of a dedicated weekly sports newspaper, "The Title". It lasted less than 6 months (iirc) before it was amalgamated into a standard format paper.

I enjoy sports radio but I'd not like to see a full time station come about either. I think what we have is just right. I could see a full time sports station turning into the equivalent of Sky News. Stay tuned long enough and you start seeing the same items over and over again.

Makes a nice break from the incessant soccer the last few weeks, an absolute bore if you have no interest.
