Netweather.tv have a decent rainfall radar map which also shows lightning strikes. You can zoom in closer than on the Met Eireann map plus it shows the major towns. The free version now also seems to update every 5 mins (was 15 mins).

News on radio stating thunderstorms could be confined to the east this evening

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,068 ✭✭✭Iancar29

Some recent sferics around the Cavan area.

Can't really see much activity for us in the east later though bar some heavy showers. Instability just not high enough.

The worst thunderstorm I ever saw was in Belgium, have never seen another that compared to it.

Estofex have a rare enough level 1 over us later on today.
    2016062506_201606232242_2_stormforecast.xml.png

A level 1 was issued for Ireland mainly for excessive convective precipitation and (non-supercellular) tornadoes.

Definitely not. Looks like there was a glitch with the composite radar images generated at 09:45

Met Eireann. Compare the animated composites from the 09:30 and 10:00 to the 9:45 and see for yourself.

Yep must have been a glitch, activity is not decreasing.

Ok. I see that. The blob up in Cavan/Fermanagh suddenly became less threatening! Usually I use Netweather for more detail but rainfall radar can lag by 30mins sometimes or it doesn't even show any rainfall in Leinster. Presumably they get their raw data from Shannon/Dublin Airport's radar, but processing goes awry every so often, so its back to Met Eireann for confirmation. Wish they'd display a bigger map on the site though.
