...Last October Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Liverpool, Newcastle & Gateshead, Oxford became Centres of Cultural Excellence ......

....City officials say the successful bid will create around 14,000 new jobs and generate around 280 million euros in tourism...

OK I can understand Oxford getting shortlisted , but the others ? and over a quarter of a billion in tourism - - this just can't be serious ...

Why does the Mersey run through Liverpool?

'Cause if it walked it would be mugged!:) :)

Liverpool is actually quite a nice city, can't really comment on the other cities though.

One thing I will say though is that whoever was judging probably never walked around the city on a Friday or Saturday night. Great place to go out in, great pubs and clubs but the number of homeless people on the streets looking for money is ridiculous - makes Dublin look good in that regard.

Neither do I but I can see how the idea might be funny to some people. Really more of a society or an arts type of thread.

i was in Birmingham bout 2 months ago, and they were campaigning for it, Have to say some parts of the city would put Dublin to shame, But these were mostly in the coporate centre, If you stretch a little further to the outskirts the sites aint so pretty, littered with decrepid council housing.
From what i saw the city is very multi cultured, Huge chinese and asian communities there (But they're not European).

IMO this European Culture Centre lark, is just the EU's way of boosting tourism in cities where theres little or no tourist income.
So they switch it around each year, so everyone gets a go.

As for Liverpool read this BS
