I just wanted to know what u all think of repeating? Personally , I really do not want to do this , although i think i might have to because of the disasterous maths paper today , I cant help but think that it is a waste of a year of your life and i cant see it havin the same personal satisfaction as doing on the first try. What do u think?

Don't get depressed. It's not easy to actually fail hons maths in the leaving, no matter what you might think(it has one of the lowest failure rates of any subject). A mate of mine came out after it last year crying, and she got a B3 in maths on her way to 550 points. Don't even think about repeating for the moment, just concentrate on getting the rest of your exams. Try not to stress too much and if ya got any problems with cramming for paper 2 over the weekend PM me-i've just finished the first year of a maths degree.

more often that not, yore gut feeling about how you did is right.

Just repeat the Maths if you get enough points for yore course but you dont have the pass in the Maths.

Do grinds a 2-3 nights a week and work the rest.

The year will literally fly by, you'll have loads of €€€ and will ace the Maths next tyme round :)

And they just stress everyone else out too...

And also lets not forget, 1 in 5 leaving cert students do hon maths...so clearly these ppl know their stuff.

Yea as i found out the other day, you don't have to repeat your entire leaving course if you just fail maths. You can just work for the next year? or whatever even a PLC or something and then repeat the one maths exam. Anyway just try cram for the paper 2 on monday thats what im doing anyway!

just wondering has anybody repeated the LC or just studied at The Institute of Education as i plan to repeat here and wanted to get some first hand knowledge.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,263 ✭✭✭Caesar_Bojangle

The Institute of Education is not all its cracked up to be. A lot of people go to it for 6th and still dont get what they initially desired, but saying that its supposed to have the best teachers but that doesn't really matter if you're not going to put in the effort.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 630 ✭✭✭50Cent

The institute is a good school. You need to be determined and self driven to do well there. They dont care if you dont go to class. Its very easy to be lazy there. Its not for dossers. And with thousands of pupils, its no wonder 6 of them or something get str8 A's.

Bruce is a good school too. There the opposite to the Institute. they push you ridiculously. That suited me. Theres no way i would have passed maths if it wasnt for that school...seriously.

I did gridns in the institute and they have pulled up my grades incredibly, but as with every school, it doesnt mean anything unless you do the work yourself aswell

i dread repeating all that shyte again, no matter what school its in, i'd go fukin crazy:eek:

Come back to us in August!

I repeated my LC (in Ashfield college admittedly)

I thought "Oh depressing is this?" in the first day back, and then quickly had one of the best years of my life!

    It's ain't THAT bad

Whats the average price of repeating your leaving cert these days?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 274 ✭✭adjodlo

If price worries you that much then you should look into one of the many places which let you repeat for free...

    is there any?
i though you had to pay more to take the exams, even in *shock horror* lowly non-fee-paying country schools like mine
    feck it though
cant stand this whole The World Must Do Grinds thing that everyone follows now, im one of only two girls out of about a hundred in my school doing 7 honors and no grinds, surely that says something about how difficult the exams are

I had to start doing a grind in Applied Maths around November because my teacher couldn't take us a lot after school because of a new baby and extra teaching responsiblities.

I really hope I get the A in maths without a grind though :)

The exams aren't difficult...I think that's rather obvious. I've done no study in the last 2 years besides the night before the mocks and the night before the lc tests. I got the whole english course done in one night from about 30 pages from skoool.ie. I studied a grand total of 5 essays in history, and I reckon I at least got an honour in that.

The exams are easy, just people who are too lazy to study reckon that grinds will make things easier. I shud know I spent 4 mornings a week after christmas asleep in the institute

You can see from the low failure rates in all subjects that the leaving cert isn't half as hard as it's made out to be

Guys, its probably a bit late for this, but the value of seeing a professional career guidance councellor just can't be overstated.

It never ceases to amaze me how little undergraduates (and even some postgraduates) know about 3rd level courses or the options and routes to their desired career.

Baasically theres more than one way to skin a cat, and if you can still avail of the change of mind form, go see a CGC and find out if their are backdoors into your chosen career (that you can put as backup choices)

If it comes to it, there is nothing wrong with repeating, its only a year and you won't lose out on anything when you get to college (if anything you'll have a better time coz you'll have less hassle socialising than if you were 17 going in). In 15 years time in your career, noone is going to care if you were 22 or 27 when you finished college and you are going to be working for about 40 years, one more in education won't kill you.

The big problem is that it is sometimes LC courses are woefully taught.

I just taught a first year undergrad course in a college. We covered the whole LC chemistry course and about 5 more advanced areas before christmas. As a comparison, one of the lab practical that coincides with my lectures has a question in the lab write up that is basically a LC long titration question. Full marks in that question would earn you 1.5% of your total mark for the year.

In fairness most people who fail dont do grinds. People who do grinds are trying to get high As and Bs.

Grinds are an addition to your own study, and of all my subjects thes ones I do in grinds I'm going to get my best marks in :)

does that de-value the LC then?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,186 ✭✭✭✭Sangre

    In what sense?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,263 ✭✭✭Caesar_Bojangle

I was listening to rte radio1 last friday morning before irish and they were interviewing some stuck up cow from the department of eductaion blah blah blah..... right at the very end she wished all the leaving cert students who had studied the very best, but to those who did little or next to none she hoped that they'd get their just deserts, i.e fail.

What a ignorant bitch. The way people like her think, that just because someone puts in more hours study consistently, they deserve to pass, whereas those who dont should fail. I know plenty of people who did fup all this year but with the aid of cramming will do just as well if not better than some who put the effort in over the whole year. As some people are naturally intelligent, but are just too lazy to work until the last moment by cramming. On the other hand there are those who need to student systematically to get a 'C',

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,396 ✭✭✭✭kaimera

that they are paying for their grades.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,186 ✭✭✭✭Sangre

I suppose it is an unfair advantage, but they still have to work themselves. Money will always be an advantage, and thats a fact of life.

P.s I really hope I get the A in maths so I can rub it in everyone's faces who did a grind in my class :)
