I have to bring this up as it has come to my attension that these ads are going a bit too far.

A few days ago I saw the new Clearasil ad. The one that tells you that if you have bad skin a girl will dump you. Yes. I feel that allot of people (Including me) would be offended by this gesture.

Isn't this a company who is "Dedicated" to help teens (Who have a reputaton of depression) in clearing faces not letting them down and telling them this BS.

Ads give out a message. For Lynx there is "Use this product and girls will love you". And if you don't your getting nowhere. These type of ads adjust the way a human thinks for the rest of his/hers life.

The Dettox Anti-Bacteria ads. Claiming that your children are in danger.

I fear that Ireland will be consumed with this "Fear tactic" which America has allready been consumed by. Anyone see "Bowling for columbine"?

It the moment I am writing to Clearasil about this. And I urge more people to write if you are offended. For the good of our country....

Ads are evil! No really, they are but I (and I'm sure I'm not the only one) just tend to look through or past them these days. Most ads are offensive in some respect as they prey on viewers fears and insecurities. Loosing your hair? - buy this, want smooth wrinkle free skin? - buy that, and so on.

Its just background noise at this stage

Does anyone here actually sit through a whole ad break without either flicking over to check what on the other side(s) or check teletext for some reason?

    Mike.

I lower the volume. I don't want people I don't even know telling me I'm ulgy and I need this.

ASAI. They've an online form. Have a look at their advertising guidelines and see if it breaches any of them. If it does, have fun.

All ads are similiar in design.Think about it-how many ads for the likes of Smirnoff Ice,beers and spirits feature either a group of young men,or one young man, clowning around and acting the mad fcuker,or else feature good looking women drinking responsibly and having a good time?Of course we never see anybody in these ads who is off their face, unlike a large minority of the customers will be.

IMO these ads are designed to have placebo effects. If some guy buys Lynx and this Friday he gets off with half a dozen girls he may,if he is of low intelligence, think that Lynx contributed to his success and so will continue buying it due to its supposed women magnet qualities which in fact are a pure coincidence. Is it scientifically proven that sweaty men hang around other sweaty men?Is it proven that Lynx attracts women? No.For all we know the opposite may be true. Some girls hate the smell of Lynx and the like.I personally dislike wearing lynx and honestly think sweat smells better.Ive found that many people who obsessively wear deodrant are posers anyway. You know, the types who bullsh1t about women they claim they shagged, the types who cant take losing a football match, those types.Which further proves that ads target the insecure.

But while on the subject of advertising I disagree that"sexy"drinks ads contribute to the drinking problem.Think about it-how many times have you seen Buckfast,Dutch Gold or Smirnoff original vodka advertised on tv?Seldom if ever but its still what people binge drink because its less pricey than the drinks which are being solely blamed.

Now Im off to get some chewing gum.The chicks love it!Well, they did in some ad I saw anyway. So they will deffo love it if I chew it!

im surprised the gay community hasnt boycotted or complained about the lynx ad. it is pure lies too men have been proven to be repulsed by mens sweat and women are attracted to it! and vice versa.

the best are the dandruff ads. the guy leering at the good looking girl (or vice versa) then they spot the dandruff and are disgusted! comical

Yeah, I totally agree with you. I used to have really bad acne, and although its completely gone now (thank you roaccutane) I still get really pi$$ed off with those ads. I mean, its one thing to try to coerce you to buy a product, but to put the emotional blackmail in that girls won't like you if you have acne is completely off the wall. When I used to have acne, yes, girls usually didn't like looking at me and I know that I wouldn't like to be fcuking reminded of that every time I turned the TV on. And I even tried using clearasil, for all the good it did me!!!!! So, to lower the tone of this post like Clearasil have lowered the tone of their ad's, 'F-U-C-K Y-O-U Clearasil'.
To tell the truth though, I really think that irish guys are getting a raw deal in all the media nowadays. There are those ad's on the TV, similar ad's on the radio (usually featuring some snobby D4 bird belittling her boyfriend over something) or my personal favorite - in the papers. Seen this 'lovely' article in the sunday independent about some girl saying that Irish guys are too immature to know how to flirt. I mean, WTF, what have irish guys done to deserve this culture-wide hammering by women? Was it something we said?

I'm probably going to regret this BUT:

..unlikely as the stereotypical Irish Lass would have to shut up for long enough for us to say something! :D

Advertisments are there to sell you things (obviously) and profit is the motive for these ads. Advertisers and the Marketing departments in these companies aren't in the one bit interested in the likes of you or I and our feelings towards there ad campaigns, unless of course enough of us feel the need to boycott their products etc to the extent that it eats into their profits.

Fear is a way of selling a product and it clearly works because we keep seeing and hearing ads such as the afformentioned one from clearasil.

People wont purchase goods/services if they feel their lives will not be enhanced by them. Teenager/young people are at such a point in their lives that having their lives enhanced by any means whether it be through having clearer skin, snazzy football boots or the lates David Beckham hair cut. The scare tactics used by advertisers works most effectively on this market as they are more sensitive to issues such as being dumped or unpopular.

People often neglect the fact that many of these companies produce several good in the same area, ie LEVER brothers produce several washing powders there is in effect very little competition with other companies in that area similarly with hair care products etc. This gives the consumer very little flexiblity if they hope to affect the way advertising is employed by companies.

I'm not sure if the way advertisements condition people has been raised before but I find it interesting to see how much people are affected unconsciously by it. For example in all the toothpaste ads we see, the people with the big white, bright set of teeth cover the entire length of the brush with the toothpaste, from years of watching these ads its amazing to see people copy this when in fact only a tiny amount of toothpaste is needed. This causes people to use more toothpaste thus meaning the companies profits go up. I find it interesting to learn about the psychology used in advertising and the methods used to influence people. The subtle additions to an advertisment can make such a difference to it's level of effectiveness.

Don't know if any of that makes sense but I tried...

One ad campaign thats doing my head in these days is on radio, its for Baileys Minis (for the miniest of reasons...") These drinks are oppotunities to get plastered by degrees on the pretext of some trival
celebration. I find the implication that any reason is a good enough reason to consume liquor rather annoying. It does'nt help that the ads themselves are in the typically glib "young things about town" stylee. Truth is such drinks are proberly consummed by middle aged ppl who are feeling miserable and tired and think they need/deserve a "pick-me-up".

Has there ever been any conclusive evidence that ads influence people's buying decisions?

I see car ads all the time, but if I had the money to buy a car it would be a Lotus Elise (which AFAIK have never had ads)

I am constantly bombarded by ads for Champion/Marathon sports but never buy anything from those shops. I have never bought Nike (look at the price! They're just runners, and they look poxy too).

When I go to the pub I buy a Bulmers. Why? because I like the taste, the fact that the apples have been lovingly tended to by some old git with nothing better to do than sit on a chainsaw never came into the decision.

Surely we've become 'immune' to ads at this stage, they are there on the radio purely to annoy us and on the telly they provide handy breaks to go to the bog/get something to eat.

Well, I saw this ad on tv yesterday, and if it's the same ad you're talking about....god, you're taking it completely in the wrong way!
The line used is "If your skin was a girl you'd dump it". The implication is that, your skins erraticism is annoying and pisses one off. Not "Oh gross, people with acne should be dumped!".

Just wondering, what is the penalty for .. er ... improving:) ... a Billboard in Ireland

Would you be charged with vandalism, destruction of private property, slander?? Have any ad busters ever been charged in Ireland?

DeV are'nt you getting angry with the wrong ppl?

You can have a go at the Madison Avenue ad merchants but its the funding of schools and the laws that undderpin funding that allows blatent product placement by private interests.

Oh dont worry, theres plenty of anger to go around.

That stuff (the school etc) rates about 3 on a scale of 1 to 10.
The exploitation of underage workers in the Export Processing Zones really gets my goat.

I dont like advertisers because they are always there with their cheque books ready to conquer that last bit of personal space. They whisper in your ear that they are really doing the community a service and that its their right to advertise wherever someone who owns the space is willing to rent them.

Some of them arent bad people, just out to make good ads and sell products. Some of them are scum with no morals whatsoever.

i think it would be great if the government would pass a law saying all ads must be in irish then they would have no effect on us and also it would help the irish language if it was more visible

media interests rob you of your life and advertisiers try to sell it back to you instead of watching ads with people being all sexy and painting people that dont use their product as uncool and unlikely to get laid we should be out drinking with our friends having a good time but with the all the new anti drink laws being enacted it seems like this government just want us to sit in watch tv and consume products

i know there are other things you can do with your friends beside drink but hiking in wicklow at 1am saturday night isnt an option

i feel so dirty and manipulated now that i know i have been using too much toothpaste it's just like those wrigley's ad where they take two pieces instead of one

"By the way, if anyone here is in advertising or marketing, kill yourself. Thank you, thank you. Just a little thought. I'm just trying to plant seeds. Maybe one day they'll take root. I don't know. You try. You do what you can. Kill yourselves. Seriously though, if you are, do. No really, there's no rationalisation for what you do, and you are Satan's little helpers, OK? Kill yourselves, seriously. You're the ruiner of all things good. Seriously, no, this is not a joke. "There's gonna be a joke coming..." There's no ****ing joke coming, you are Satan's spawn, filling the world with bile and garbage, you are ****ed and you are ****ing us, kill yourselves, it's the only way to save your ****ing soul. Kill yourself, kill yourself, kill yourself now. Now, back to the show.

"You know what Bill's doing now, he's going for the righteous indignation dollar, that's a big dollar, a lot of people are feeling that indignation, we've done research, huge market. He's doing a good thing." Godammit, I'm not doing that, you scumbags, quit putting a godamn dollar sign on every ****ing thing on this planet!"
