I think www.123.ie use them for their travel insurance.

If you have access to a group scheme then you will get a very good deal on travel insurance, as well as other types of insurance.

i used to use the ace travel insurance in th past until i found insurancebookers.com to be cheaper, with the same level of cover, particularly if you have vhi/bupa as well

AIB use ACE as well, but we always go direct now.

We get an annual worldwide family policy from ACE for €59

I've used Ace any time I've went abroad.. no complaints!

But at the same time, I've (thankfully.. *touch wood*) never had to use it. Unfortunately.. that's the problem with travel insurance - you only really discover how good or bad their cover is when you're in the situation to need it.

Was thinking the exact same, anybody here actually had to use the insurance and how did they fair?

I had to claim from Ace last year for doctor visits in the States and a cancellation/re-booking fee from the airline. It was around €350 total I was owed. I had to send a a lot of paperwork including receipts, emails, etc pertaining to the claim. They made a mistake writing my number for the claim, and it took me a couple of months to figure out what was happening. I was the one who figured out that a wrong number had been written after I had called them numerous times wondering what was happening with the claim. It took me about 4 months to get my cheque and alot of emails and calls back and forth. They don't make it easy. I don't know if any insurance company would be different though. Just make sure you keep a record of all correspondance if you are making a claim and try to talk to the same person each time. Save all receipts for claims and familiarise yourself with the policy before you go. For example, with ACE i think you have to call them first to get their permission to use medical services abroad if it's going to cost over a certain amount of money.

Some good advice there. I take a copy of all my insurance documents and laminate them when I go away, copies of all relevant phone numbers in my wallet along with health insurance card and ehic card. I also have a copy of all documents on my email account so I know I can access whilst abroad if there is a need. Be aware of the small print with your policy eg some policies are void if you don't call international assistance BEFORE starting medical treatment !

We were previously well and truly screwed over by a holiday company, their rep and their generic travel insurance.

We have also has the misfortune to be burgled twice in one week.

As a previous poster indicated it is highly unlikely that any insurance company will make it easy for you to claim. The more supporting documentation you can provide, the easier it is likely to be.

Always, always read the small print. ACE (and probably others) will allow you to view a typical policy online. That way you can see if it meets your requirements.

As regards paperwork....keep or copy everything; from receipts for new clothes/electrical items to drivers license, passports & EHIC cards.

Useful phone numbers will save you time and hassle in the long run too should the worst happen.

I fractured my leg in poland skiing on the last day of my holiday. Had ACE insurance and can say nothing but good things about them. I didnt have a E111 card set up so they did it for me. I had a choice of going home by helicopter or staying in poland for my operation. I stayed in Poland. They paid for accommodation for my girlfriend while I was in hospital, long distance taxi to the airport, 3 seats for me on the flight home, 1 for my girlfriend, ambulance/jeep home from dublin to wexford. Afterwards I sent in my receipts for medicine, crutches, ( I think phone credit) etc and they reimbursed me, no hassle. They also texted me my policy number when I got the insurance in the first place which was very handy.

€49 for a whole years cover

    Seems pretty good to me!

http://www.acetravelinsurance.ie/ are quoting €71 for the same thing!

They are quoting €13 for 17 nites.
Do this three times in a year, still cheaper than the €49

Now if its the case you can afford to go away for more than three trips, you dont need to worry about cost of insurance in the first place.

Just got getcover.ie cover. Annual trip €37.50 that is with health insurance alot cheaper than ace and includes usa (which can be an extra with other companies). Even without health insurance it is pretty good. I use them whenever i go. A friend got her money back through them when she broke her toe and couldnt go on hols. Were easy to deal with.

I don't think you're going to get that kiwipower as that is a voluntary, non-essential action on your part. Curtailment cover is designed for sudden and unforseen incidents that require you to cut short your holidays, such as a family bereavement back home or escorting someone who was on holiday with you being repatriated home following an accident or the like

Am in the market for a 'decent' travel insurance policy but am very very wary as we had an awful experience with the company we were with for the last few years - Blueinsurances - the underwriter was Axa and after hubby ending up in Casualty in the US we had a bill of over $800. All was in order - we sent them the excess on the policy and everything when they asked (they cashed the cheque and all) and months and months later I was still getting threatening letters from the hospital over non payment of the bill (Axa were supposed to pay it direct) ... Long story short, it took the Ombudsman to finally get it sorted. Soooo ... anyone have any good experiences with companies mentioned???

    Thanks

In the past I've used getcover.com. I don't use them any more.
When In the USA, I missed a connecting flight because the first one was delayed. I ended up having to wait 24 hours for the next one.
When I claimed off the policy, the insurance company said the circumstances weren't covered by them. Sorry, I can't remember the full details. I remember I had to provide a huge lot of documentation and was still told I wasn't covered and I wasn't compensated
Advice here is to read the policy before you buy but I genuinely would have expected these circumstances to have been covered and pretty standard.
I did not have a good experience when it came to making a claim. I question whether it is even worth the money buying travel insurance. With excesses and exceptions, maybe it is only any proper use in the case of serious injury or death.

Buy insurance and hope you never need to use it because all the poor sods who had insurance and were saying "Thank God I got travel insurance" during the ash cloud episodes were told by the insurance companies "It's an act of God, f*ck off".

So from thanking God you are now blaiming him because you are left with bills and cancelled holiday plans.

I was one of those sods but unlike some things worked out so I got most of my money back. The people who have flights to London to connect onward (unless they are on the same ticket) are F*CKED.

I recently looked into this, and it turns out the GetCover are the only ones (according to their rep) who provide some sort of cover if you miss you flight, but there are several conditions:
    1) you have to choose their backpacker policy, which works out much more expensive than their annual policy.
    2) when buying their backpacker policy, one has to specifically add 'connecting flights cover' (for my trip to Thailand for two months this summer, this extra will cost about 15 euro on top)
    3) however, even having taken this extra option does not guarantee that you will be covered if you miss one of your connecting flights. According to the fine print, this option covers missed connecting flights only when you your flights have at least three hours before them (as on your tickets). So if you only allowed for 2h45min between your flights, and your first flight is late, and you miss your connecting flight, well... you are not covered...

€38 bought today, 2 adults, annual multitrip for Europe inc Turkey, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia and a few other places in North Africa.
this was the best price I found.
However, if you want to buy as a single person they kind of rub it in - €38 total for a couple but €29 for a single!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,956 ✭✭✭consultech

Im pricing up a single trip on multitrip.com and they're claiming on their homepage that they're covering flight cancellations for an extra 6 quid a head. Does this include any cancelations due to ash cloud etc?

Ps. I dont want to hear the words "Force Majeure" or "Act of God" in any replies!

I take it that wouldn't cover Ryanair point to point flights? I'm trying to get insurance that covers this, but Ryanair make it clear they don't do connecting flights. Next July, I have booked fligts to Stansted, then flights to Bergamo - with 4 hours in between flights each way (it was less than half the price of Dublin-Bergamo direct!).

What if you (or a family member) gets sick just before the trip, and you can't travel. Would something like that be covered ?

For example here's 123.ie's cover options for Europe single trip:
    screenshotzlm.th.png

The say cancellation is covered in Silver and Gold cover, but going on what people are saying in this thread the may try and get out of it.

Just wondering if people think cover like this is actually what it claims to be ? Or is it worth it at all ??

    Hi,

I'm going to New Zealand on a 1 year work/travel visa but will spend 8 weeks travelling around South East Asia first. What is the best option as regards travel insurance ?? Under getcover.ie there's an option for Mutli-trip and also Backpacker....the latter being the very expensive (€356) when you add on cover for baggage and connecting flights. Multi-trip comes in at €183...are these prices average enough ?

there is no point in you getting annual multi-trip, because technically under the terms of the 'multi-trip' definition, it is multiple trips, originating in Ireland for no more than 90 days duration (on some policies 30 days). So basically, this is not applicable to you because your time outside of Ireland travelling exceeds 90 days. although you are making various stop offs during your trip, for the purposes of multi-trip insurance you have only made one trip, so you would not be covered past 90 days (or whatever maximum that company sets).

I always use Ace travel insurance, based on a recommendation of a friend who had to put in a claim and had no problems with it.

Annual travel insurance is probably more expensive.
I see Ace have "Winter sports insurance" which is probably what you want.
You can get insurance for 5/10/17 days etc, so I'd get winter sports insurance for the skiing, and general insurance for non-winter sports.

I imagine the skiing has a cost premium due to the frequency of injuries.

    All persons to be insured
are currently insured under a Private Medical Insurance (PMI) policy covering medical expenses abroad; and
will maintain a PMI policy that covers medical expenses abroad for the duration of this travel insurance policy.

Does this not make the travel insurance pointless or am I missing something???

That normal if youpicked tthatyou have VHI etc. They give you slightly cheaper price as your own health insurance will cover say €1m of medical expenses.
There would be other benefits on the travel policy such as lost baggage, delayed flights and so on.

If you took out the policy before getting pregnant then a great chance of them paying out, anytime after and not a hope
