    Three new Channels from TV3
    well maybe!
I saw on the BCI website TV3 have applied for a satellite license for three new channels. One is a Youth Channel, the other a lifestyle channel for mature women and the third is a drama channel for 35 year olds and over. There is also a music channel from Setanta, two other channels, An Irish Versison of BBC parliament, a Dublin channel and a learning channel. Interseting about the TV3 channels. I wonder if will it be irish content or just 3rd and 4th rate ITV programming. In fact I wonder, what the hell will be on it.

Sorry find it a bit hard to believe 'cos in every other country it's the national broadcaster wot does that.

As for the rest isn't TV3 more or less a Granada subsidery or similar so lots of ITN repeats etc. ...

is the current Dail TV contract independent ie with Windmill Lane, and packaged back to RTE?

is this kite flying or is someone really going to launch these formats in the tiny TV market that is here?

    did the http://www.irelandlivetelevision.tv/ die?

Yeah it sounds strange, but they are all Satellite Channels!! So I'd say the TV3 channel's are for SKY. Two music channels are for UK, Ireland and Nothern Europe, Setanta is just UK & Ireland(defo Sky I'd say).
As for the Dail channel, I'd say there is a market out there, however small, as think of the amount of people who would follow the issues being brought up with their TD's. My Dad was in the Dail one night and a Woman there was debating some bill about Roads in Kerry. He said she must have named nearly every road in South Kerry, and Ivar Callerly(TD Dublin North Central, I think) said they name all these things, because they get printed in the local paper's. As for expense. My sister was working in RTE news room and said there is a constant link between the two Dail chambers and RTE, all they do is record it. So someone goes in and changes the tape every 3 hours(I kid you not.) So I dont think expense would be too high, as they would probably transfer the pictures to RTE/TV3 and off their Satellite to the Astra satellite. So the dail Channel(RTE Parliament\Ireland Live) makes sense really. As for the others, Im not so sure. Im really interested in what programming TV3 are offering.

This is old news, this was done sometime around Christmas 02.

It really is kite flying... Like, how many of the stations mentioned will see the light of day? As regards TV3, as Mossy Monk, get their own one sorted before the launch another service!!

These TV3 channels were originally planned to take up capacity on the ill-fated Irish DTT system.

It takes awhile to get a licence, if they have one then *if* the market improves they can launch a Satellite channel quickly.

We (fortunately) are very unlikely to actually see these channels.

    Windmill Lane Studio
I remember James Morris's outfit when he only had an Edit Suite in a Georgean terrace nr. Stephen's green or some such place.

I put some gear in to Windmill Lane just as builders were leaving. It was a lovely conversion. They had an old Cinema Projector on a sprung concrete raft rigged so it could project to stage or into a camera via an optical "gate".

I think they along with Granada and someone else own TV3. I think Granada may be largest Shareholder now.

The Canadian company CanWest, who operate CityTV in Canada, and make(made?) FashionTV with Jeannie Bekker (used to love that programme;) were/are stakeholders in TV3, along with James Morris (as an individual shareholder as well as Windmill director), James Stafford (ex Century director),U2 and Windmill Lane Studios. Not sure how many of them are still involved.

Slightly OT but, I remember writing to Windmill lane requesting some information for a college project I was doing.
Six weeks later and , long after the project was finished, I got a reply along the lines of " We're sorry but there are no vacancies here at present but we will keep your application on file "
It was my first ever pfo letter and all I asked for was info on a project and not for a job:D
I wonder if thats , the err... sort of thing that goes on at TV3?

Ring a place and try and get a specific "name" to write / email to or that kind of thing can happen anyplace.

TV3 still recruits half its staff in all departments from TG4 because the mangy hoors would otherwise have to pay to train them properly.

These channels listed on the BCI (a disgrace) are only expressions of interest received by the BCI to an advertisement some months ago. A few, if any, may materialise some time in the future.

The BCI must be really looking forward to licensing new TV services. They can dole out the licenses left right and centre but it does not mean that you will ever get on the air. The license holder then has to negotiate with the cable, MMDS and DSAT operators to get carraige on their systems. Cable and MMDS both currently have capacity limitations while the cost of going onto the Sky platform may be prohibitive for some licence holders - especially those local content licence holders. The BCI will look busy but one wonders will the viewing public ever benefit.

TV3 have suggested a 5th channel. They say they are ready.

    ITV2 Ireland Prehaps.

Have you seen TV4 New Zealand. :( Shock and aww(Canwest own it)

TV3 is owned 45% by Granada, 45% by Canwest and 10% by the Irish Business People mentioned above.
