MTV - where's the music gone?

This was a point brought to my attention by my bro. MTV don't seem to do music videos any more during the day. :(

Looking at my DigiGuide, In a 24 hour day (didn't realise they broadcast a complete 24/7), music videos are only shown from 2am to 1 lunchtime (11 hours) and then for ½-1 hour later in the afternoon. :(

The rest of the day is made up mainly of Jackass - 3 hours and Osbournes - 3hrs, which are nearly all daily repeats. Yeah lads, it was funny the first time. Still a bit funny second, third and fourth time. But sheesh it's a bit stale after several months :( Give us music! If we want the other stuff we'll go to Channel 4/ Sky one.

    It is what it's.

Basically all of the music has gone to MTV Hits, MTV2, MTV Base and MTV Dance.
Then there is all the other channels like Smash Hits and Kiss and the like but I don't know if they are affiliated with MTV.
So, really, the music has gone to digital channels.

(How did you get it to say "Last editied by my dog"?)

Yeah, they did the "digital migration" by stealth.

I tend to watch it before I go to work (around 5-6am) and late at night (i.e. now) and I see music but the odd time when I look around primetime there's always cribs and crap on.

The funny thing is, I'd have expected BBC/UTV to move all their best prgramming to digital, but I'd never have thought MTV would be the first to sell out....

God... do you remember MTV circa 1993-1999!! What happened that they went so far astray from those days?

In case you haven't noticed, they're filling up the MTV2 day with Jackass and Dirty Sanchez as well.

Take into account the amount of A-listed tracks (extremely heavy rotation) and you actually get very little music.

True, but I don't really watch MTV or MTV2 so it doesn't bother me. The only reason I'd watch them is to see Dirty Sanchez.

The only MTV channel that doesn't show programs is MTV Dance I think.

MTV has gone to hell with all there programs I wouldn't mind if they were new but its all just Osbournes repeats or "Classic Osbournes" as they like to call it, (when is a show thats less then a year old considered a classic FFS).

[And then there is that O so annoying "bleeping Osbournes" or whatever it's called, where they replace all the cursing with horn sounds, or dogs' barking.

    hate it so much

The Amp is an awesome music channel has some repeats but it plays music 24/7 with snippets of artist info in between.

MTV2 can be good when its not showing jackass or that welsh dude.

Speaking of which, does anyone know what happened to that guy Toby Amies after he left MTV? That guy was just BEYOND cool. Anyone who can stand there laughing at (and taking the piss out of) Johnny Rotten whilst similtaneously conducting an interview with him definetly deserves respect! :)

agreed. it puts everything else on Sky to shame.

Chartshow TV surprised me last night. they played the whole of the Aphex Twins - Windowlicker video last night. the reactions of the people watching with me was comical

As far as i know Sky own Amp Scuzz and flaunt as the other Imap channels Q Kerrang Kiss etc: are making lots of cash so Sky set up those 3 and with mTV wanted lots more money to stay on Sky it was best for Sky to launch their own.

That's because they go all hardcore, XXX and raunchy at night. Along with XXXu or is it UXXX, I dunno, channel U and Kerrang aswell.
Basically with U and possibly Chartshow TV it's rotation of
    Aphex Twin - Window Licker
    Alice Cooper - Poison
    NERD - Lapdance
some 80's chick, cant remember her name - Boys Boys Boys (or something like that)
and occasionly add N to X - Plug Me In

Let it be noted I don't watch this all the time, but I dont really watch tele during the day and my routine is to start with Paramount the on to Sci-Fi, CNX, movie channels, sports channels (as far as eurosport news), music channels as far as Raunch (oh that might do x-rated too) and then onto Trouble and Cartoon Network. So I usually end up seeing some of these videos and considering they do this every night, I end up flicking through the same videos all the time.

Pfft, you're only a wee kid. I can remember MTV from the mid-eighties, though I didn't see the opening day.

Er, Sabrina. The song's called Summertime Love. See above. Think it was on Now 15 but I could be wrong there. Always get her mixed up with Sinitta.

I watched some of Punk'd earlier and thought it was quite funny. Not sure I would take it on a weekly basis though. For some reason I usually start my music channel flicking at 441 rather than 440 so I didn't notice all these changes going on.

Completely off-topic, Kerrang were showing the Evanescence video earlier. I like that song quite a bit (though I realise that no-one else does)

It seems NTL have copped onto the lack of music. They're now showing a few music videos on one of those channels that goes off air in the evening. (I think it's the Nickelodeon channel?) Good stuff from them (well, it's better than nothing!).

    It is what it's.

Saw Girls Aloud on it. Yeah it's Nickelodeon which becomes the link channel then. Is this regionalised? Because there have been ads for local stuff in Dublin which would hardly be of interest to people outside Dublin.

As far as i know, they had to ban a load of videos during the war on Iraq. However they have failed to bring them back due to the success of programmes like JackAss, THe osbournes and Cribs which were shown during the war to make up for the lack of videos. Seeing as ratings are up, they've decided to use the 'If it's not broke, dont fix it' term.

Where did you pull that one from mate? I used to be an avid watcher of MTV - and I can tell you it slid into this state in 2002. Nothing to do with iraq at all. Ratings up? Again. Where do you pull that from? I doubt MTV's ratings have gone up ever.

MTV are wasting their presenters right now - and it's a damn shame too because Dave is pretty good. The only decent thing on MTV is their hourly news now really.

Dave the chap that used to be on Nickelodeon?
    He's a total tosser imo.

Each to their own I guess - I think he's what they need now. And the Tim Cash guy too is quite good. Everyone else is bland and easily forgettable, that place needs personality - 'attitude', if you will.

MTV (Music Television) and it's related TV channels (MTV2/Base/etc) are absolute tripe.

The rebellious, innovative TV channel launched in '82/'87 is well and truely dead. In it's place we have cynically marketed _tosh_ dressed up as all things rebellious and cool.

MTV became too big to retain it's original values, while still trying to be commercially successful. It was a simply a business choice between "the true spirit of rock 'n' roll" and "uncle sam's greenbacks".

And with MTV at it's heart being a business first and foremost, the lust after the greenbacks have won out, for good or for bad.

Mtv has really taken a dive. I am now driven insane by the amount of osbournes and jackass repeats which are shown over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over:ninja:
and the bleeping osbournes is the most ridiculous thing ever cause every second word is bleeped and the only things that were funny are bleeped :ninja:  we're all being forced to get digital

not only that but it's the noises they use really grate on my nerves. i will very rarely watch MTV UK + Ireland now. it is a load of bleep

Yeah, I never watch MTV anymore. What's the point, no music on it anyway. I watch some of the digital MTV channels though.

    Okay, I'll explain myself somemore.

They also had to ban some vid's after September 11th. And bare in mind that I also said afaik.
