Let me guess your one of this Celtic supporters who beyond Larson knows no one on th team, but taught you better buy a celtic jersey or the rest of the lads would think you an orange ****.

I actually think Rangers would have done a better job tonight as they have the better individual players.

I have to say its beyond me why so many irish people support a scottish team in the first place....

smells to me like misplaced patriotism....

what about the fact that those porto players seemed to have been to stage school rather than the youth academy?!? even o'neill has commented on it

I ran a thread on this Celtic phenomenon ages ago - check it out - there's some good arguments there... or at least, you could check it out, but it was too l ong ago...

    dang!

I was kinda hoping the athletic wing of the IRA would do a bit better last night... played well in the second half, but Porto always looked more dangerous than them. Pity Porto ended up dancing and diving all over the shop, and that the ref (who looked like he was twelve) had to ruin the game with the sending off... I was hoping they'd do well mainly for martin o'neills sake, so that he could ascend into heaven and be seated at the right hand of The Father... or at least go to Liverpool...

Maybe but History will record them as the winners.Anyway Celtic had 120mins to beat them,so dont blame a few mins of time wasting on losing the cup, celtic weren't good enough and porto had most of the possesion.

Well you could say the same thing about anyone who supports any foreign team ... liverpool, man u, arsenal etc.

IMO Celtic are more than just another foreign team. There are obvious Irish connections. But that is just my opinion.

I spotted one, rather small scottish flag in the crowd during the match. The Irish flags were so close to my face that I must of overlooked them.

Misplaced patriotism perhaps, but they do have one or two Irish youth players, were founded by Irish, half the Scots would sooner affiliate themselves with Irish rather than British (if we would have them) and finally, Mary Robinson made a big speech about our diaspora once and I was young and impressionable at the time.

    Well done Porto.

After 120 minutes of football Porto were the deserving winners. Overall they played better football and looked the more dangerous when attacking. There was a bit of time wasting and acting by the Porto players but there was 6 minutes of injury time in extra time alone. As finals go, I felt it was good and entertaining to watch. Celtic deserve credit for getting so far.

no doubting they were the better footballers, quality came out over endeavour, but its disappointing to see the diving creeping more and more into the game. i'm not saying its just them or as other threads have suugested arsenal, utd or even my beloved liverpool, just hate to see it...

fair play to celtic for getting there, fait play to porto for beating them

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,921 ✭✭✭✭Pigman II

Fair play to Porto. They were the better team and deserved the victory. Celtic can't claim foul regarding diving because they got exactly the same play-acting from Boavista in the semi's and should have prepared appropriately for a repeat performance last night. They didn't and they paid.

The simple fact is that if Celtic had been good enough they would have prevailed over portos gamesmanship, but the portuguese team were superior in both skill and attacking ambition.

On a side-note I was very impressed with that little fella Deco. I'd never heard of him before tonight but I don't think that's the last we'll here of him either.

Why are you sorry that he exists, are you trying to imply that you had something to do with it?

It's a good thread IMHO, I was supporting Celtic but they were beaten by the better team. The thread is basically just doing what it says - well done to Porto.

I had the intention of supporting Porto last night to piss off my mates but when I walked into the pub and had an IRA Raffle Ticket shoved in my face, I thought I had better conform.

I want to know how you prepare for facing diving opponents. Don't tackle, presumably?

As I read Jakes comments he's being post modern and ironic, but I could be wrong and a lousy social historian! :D

    Agreed!
Tackling is/should be part of the game of football, last nights performance by Porto did the game no favours, even thought technically they were superior to Celtic!

    Work that one out!
    :p

The most amazing game of footie Ive ever been at, in terms of the pure experience of it all! (not having been lucky to be at any Euro Champs or World Cups).

You cant deny that Porto did do well.

(Top)Deco does indeed seem to be a class player, a few porto fans I spoke to the night before the game seemed to think he is the next figo (altho they would say that!!)

I think the game was close, both teams could have won it, but a few Celts did not play well, and loosing the big man at the back was vital..

Not bitter and twisted about it at all..

(as even if they had not scored we would not have won the shootout, as were utter pony (as they say over here) at penalties)

    No, not exactly.

What I mean is Celtic were inviting diving by going sliding into every 50/50 ball (even in non-vital areas) as though it was an old firm game when they should have been approaching it more cautiously since it was european game. At this level stupid lunging tackles (whether successfully employed or not) are only going to increase how convincing a dive or playacting looks to a ref - and hense will encourage the opposition to employ it more and more during the game.

Celtic were doing it all night and the number of pointless risky tackles they were committing was suprassed only by the number of times Agathe gave the ball back to the opposition within 2 seconds of touching his useless toes.

The anti-celtic attitude in here is quite shocking and disappointing. Celtic have strong Irish links which cant be denied by anyone. As for the comment on Celtic being the athletic wing of the IRA, that is the biggest load of ****e I've ever heard. I dont think anyone can deny Porto were better footballers but they were quite frankly a disgrace with their diving.

Yeah deco looks good when hes playing against Celtic, but the fact is when it comes to the cream of the cream he isnt anywhere near there as he doesnt perform against the best teams.

Why are you so surprised by the anti-Celtic stance (or at least apathetic stance) by so many people on boards.ie?

    1) Celtic are not an Irish Club nor are they affiliated to the FAI.
    2) Celtic have no Irish players in their prefered XI (nor have they had one for the best part of a decade)
    3) Celtic have a large minority of supporters who are unquestionably bigoted.
    4) Celtic have an armchair brigade which is unsurpassed in this country - even by the likes of Liverpool and ManU.
    5) Celtic have fans in this country who'll question your Irishness and/or look at you with dismay if you mention you like football yet don't care for Celtic.

Christ that would be enough to put anybody off them.

    1. Celtic have never claimed to be an Irish club, the Celtic charter states that "Celtic fc is a Scottish club with proud Irish roots" Also worth noting that Celtic is Irish owned (admittedly alot of the "Irish" that have shares in Celtic fc are not people I would admire but none the less they do own the club).

    2. Chelsea fc for example, have an Italian manager and played games over the last couple of seasons with only one or two at most English players in the team, does this make them a less English club? BTW Im sure Neil Lennon and Colin Healy would dispute this argument anyway!

    3. Granted, there certainly are bigots among those who support Celtic but as Iv said before what percentage of fans that attend English premiership games are from ethnic minorities, and why is this?

    4. Celtic also have by far the largest support within Ireland who do travel to games.

    5. Shamrock Rovers have fans in this country that spit on apposing supporters, Man U have fans in this country who still worship Roy Keane think his farts dont smell and the whole world cup fiasco was all down to the FAI and that nasty Mick McCarthy!
    :D

BTW I dont get the point of alot of what Iv just written here but then again I dont get alot of the logic in the post by Pigman 11 that Im answering here!

Are you mad??? Congratulate a bunch of divers and Cheats??????? I suppose the ref went up to collect his winners medal with them.

Celtic didnt just lose, football lost! I never want to see such a dire shower of cheats corrupt my television set again.

Did Benifica try to buy off oficials for a European Cup match against Milan at the end of the Eighties. Possible link there, Portugese way of doing things.

(I know I'm going to be slated for that one:) )
