File Sharing programs

Hi I was just wondering if anyone could recommend a good file sharing program that allows me to work behind a firewall. I'm looking for something similar to Audiogalaxy (now gone).

Bearshare and WinMX won't connect because of this firewall (I think) and was wondering if there any that avoid this problem. Alternatively does anyone know a way to somehow get around the firewall.

Yes, its a college network ;)

    TIA

Hey i had the same problem, collage network. U gotta use a thing called HTTPtunnell or Socks2HTTP. Then u can use Kazaa (and i think the rest also) . One bit of advice you will have the option of paying a small fee to get a quicker connection - get it. For like €3 or 4 your speed will be something like 50 times faster than the free one. Still not great but better than 1kb per sec. Type in a search into google 2 find these programs !! Socks2HTTP is prob better as it will set itself up - less hassle. Hope this sorts out ur prob

hey thanks for that. Did a bit of research on the Socks2HTTP thing and it seems pretty good. Its a bit confusing how it actually works but sounds like it does what I need. The thing is though that the free option seems to have been shut down so there's no way to get an evalution on it. You're right about a 50 fold increase in speed is worth €3 but I'd like to be able to test if it even works first.

Can you give me any more information about it? Is it the Socks2HTTP one that you use and would it work with WinMX. The 2-week subscription is perfect since that's all I'll really be using it for.

    Thanks again for the help.

I used to use the HTTPtunnell , it has a free service and a subscription one. The feckers in out computer services dep blocked it so we cant use it anymore. Have only started using socks2HTTP 2day - seems verygood. Im not sure what your used to prob winMx, but u should seriously get kazaa its the only way to go aparently. The socks2HTTP & HTTPtunnell arent directly related to kazaa or winmx etc, it just allows you am indirect way to copy files (get past firewall). Im thinkin there should be no prob using it with winMx. I have kazaa workin for the last 5 hours - multiple files downloading, had downloaded about 680mb's. Not sure about winMx if u get the "not enough sources" crap, the new kazaa has a built in thing that checks for new sources every 300secs - increases the overall download speed.

Id advise you to try HTTPtunnell free version to make sure it will work - then mabye pay the €4.70 for 2 months. Or try the socks2HTTP? Am pretty sure the socks2HTTP is a bit faster - but also more expensive in the long run.

Does anyone know if you can do the same if ur ISP blocks P2P programs from transmitting over the network. A Wireless BB provider in Dundalk do this.. www.digiweb.ie

more specifically, their Terms and Conditions : http://wireless.digiweb.ie/terms.asp

Yes. But if your ISP notices a HUGE bandwidth drain from u then they will wonder... And probably guess right too...

That is pretty ****y. U pay for broadband and get shafted for using it... My Wireless BB is much more accomadting. They even said that it was amazing at downloading MP3s lol

I downloaded Socks2HTTP but can't figure out how to use it.
    Can anyone tell me how?
And does HTTPtunnell only work with Linux?
If so I can forget about it, I haven't a clue of that OS.

Ok I downloaded and paid for Http-Tunnel and it worked, for about an hour. Now I've tried everything and it just won't let me connect. I have tried WinMX and Kazaa and the tunnel seems to connect ok but when I try to run the application it just sits there saying connecting but no joy.

The tunnel the seems to say "error connecting to client" and some other un-encouraging messages and then to top it off it screws up web browsing. aghhh. i have to exit the program completely and go back on the web.

I'm a bit p1sedd at this stage since i paid for the program (ok it wasn't much) and now it doesn't work.

I've posted on their forum and now I play the wating game but from reading other posts with similar problems I don't feel to confident on resolving the problem.

Has anyone else had the same porblem? COL_LOKI, you mentioned you had to start using Sockshttp but how do you find it? I may just have to cut my losses and buy that.

    TIA, quarryman

Hey the one im using is socks2HTTP - watch for the 2. Type it into google and it shows up. If u leave me ur e-mail address i can send u the configuration guide to the HTTPtunnell , tiz a bit tricky had a few probs until i red it. Chances are you will have simular probs with socks2HTTP - just by screwin around i got it to work. My settings for HTTPtunnell are for DCU - should work with ur collage. Gimme a shout by 2moro b4 2pm if u can (am headin home) .

do you just have a firewall or do you have a proxy too?

We have a firewall here and im using the free http tunnel and after about 1 min connecting time kazza lite worked. I have yet to use it thought... i just wanted to see it work.. i dont have anything i want to download with it right now...

We got a proxy & a firewall, httptunnell can be tricky sometimes. Sometimes ur lucky sometimes u want to shoot it. Dont bother using the free version - average download speet is 1kb or less !!
Pay €3 and its 18-30k slight diference

    Hi there,

i've been using the company's internet access 4 a few months now. I delete all my cookies & temp files and delete the settings in Internet Explorer LAN settings. (I just type in proxy_server Port80). I'm just wondering, can MIS department track me down & my sites.
Just for the record, no porn sites or anything like that. There is Websence Filter built in anyway.

Would I be going to far bypassing the proxy_server for P2P networks ?

    thanx4Info;)

Alir123, if you're using a HTTP tunnel, then possibliy, otherwise yes. company gateway could easily record all the hosts (sites) it has to pass packets to, and where they came from (i.e. you). You should check if your employer actually allows this, or else it could get you in trouble.

hi Coli. I'm gonna leave my email in my profile. I don't think yours has your email in it. Just to tell you I got the http-tunnel working but the download speeds are pretty poor.

I know that the college has excellent bandwidth. (I've seen files downloading at 400kb/s so I know this isn't the restriction. The socks2http was even worse. IK actually emailed them to see if I was still on the free service it was so bad. Its not as bad as it could be i guess (http-tunnel) but I won't be downloading full albums like i used to in a hurry.

Just to check. What would be the average speed you would would get files down at? I understand it varies depending on the number of people sharing and their speed but mine rarely goes higher than 40kb/s and that's very rare.

By the way we have a proxy and a firewall. The put a firewall the network before christmas after the found how much had been downloaded. 4 or 5 lads from the same lab would leave the computers on overnight getting gigs of files etc.

    Fun while it lasted.

Just a quick warning to those of you using the HTTPTunnel program.

I know that it used to store your proxy username and password in clear text in the registry. I assume they've fixed that, but beware, especially if you're not using an up to date version. Try searching for your username/password in the registry to make sure.

On that note, if you're worried about college finding out about you using it, then I would advise you to make sure it's not leaving obvious traces on the machines you are using. If an admin sees a spike of traffic coming from a machine, it's pretty trivial to find out who logged in there at that time, and it's all the more simple if they can find the registry keys (or even the program itself) that you left there.

Hey Quarryman , The restriction is with the HTTPtunnell & socks2HTTP. The collage connection i had would regualarly download at 900k/sec from websites. 40kb/sec is pretty regular for kazaa downloading in my experience. I just leave my pc on overnight and have it downloading loads of things. Its a bit of a pain but seems to be the only way out. By the way the newest kazaa clicks "find more sources" every 300 or 600 seconds this helps to keep connection speeds up and quickens overall downloads.

Its a real pain when your use to downloading albums in 2mins to have to wait 2hrs . Since u got ur HTTPtunnell workin guess theres no need to e-mail the big ass file (thank god - back to 56k connection :( ).
