The Vintners' Federation of Ireland (VFI) today called for an outright ban on certain 'shot' type drinks that encourage young people to down alcoholic drink in just one go.

Speaking at the Federation's AGM, which is taking place in Letterkenny this week, Joe Browne, president, VFI insisted that 'shot' type drinks encouraged binge drinking among young people and should be banned immediately.

"'Shot' type drinks are helping to foster today's binge drinking culture by encouraging young people to knock back drinks of a high alcohol content in one go and to mix two alcoholic drinks together as one," he said.

"Consuming extremely potent alcoholic shots and drinking alcoholic concoctions leads to highly dangerous situations," he added.

Drinks such as Vodka Slammer, which is vodka sold in a plastic container of fruit juice, and brightly coloured drinks such as Bug Blue and Bug Red exemplify the type of drinks the VFI is greatly concerned about.

I personally wouldn't think that they have that big of an effect. I can't seem them being outrightly banned either. God we'll be smuggling drink again before long :/

Lol, how do you enforce that?

Aftershock is a pure shot drink, but if you sell it in a normal glass, then it's no longer a shot, it's a drink.

Stuff like Vodka Slammers and SideKicks have absolutely nothing to do with rising alcohol consumption. I'd have them maybe once a year, and ditto with everybody I know.

    :)

it will never happen!!! if they take aftershock or sambuca or tequila "shot drinks" off the market then imo people will drink whiskey and brandy and basically other spirits

I can't see a ban. I can see a 300% increase on tax on them in next years budget though

I listend to the interview on Radio1 this morning on my way to my high paying job

then of course i woke up after sitting in traffic for 40 mins

but nehoo, it would seem that the "ban" would be on the vintners own members. as i heard it he wasnt asking for a "general ban" by all people.

    Yes and taste like piss....
There is no way they can possibily put a ban on shot drinks because as Woosaysdan said there's plenty of other spirts out there that can be used as a subsitutide such as whiskey and brandy...

It's all a load of bullshiit to stop the under age drinkin again they do it every year when the kids are about the finish school...

possibly they (the vintners) want to be seen as taking some responsibility, before the govt. steps in an p!sses on them from a great height.

    here's an idea .....

    how about ....

We actually start making the pubs/clubs more responsible to their dishing out of alcohol rather than constantly blaming the punters for everything. They're perfectly happy to shaft you for money and keeping passing you more despite the fact that it's blindingly obvious that they shouldn't be serving you any more

Somebody's farrrr gone and goes up to the bar and orders.

"I'm sorry sir/madam, you've had enough. You're not being served any more"

Simple as that. Vinters are acting responsibly, the person wont get served in any other place as well most likely (assuming they can get in the door), and it might actually start to make people stop and think about their drinking habits if they're getting cut off half-way through a night.

It's all about being responsible for your actions. Prevention is better than cure. Educating people as to why they can't/shouldn't do something is better than telling them outright that they can't do something because it's bold and not allowed.

Trust me the Vintners are an extremely powerful lobby and I'd be surprised if the goverment said boo to them over anything.

Banning shots in pubs isn't really going to cut back on underage drinking. Banning flagons of cider from offys on the otherhand might be more effective. :)

they wont be able to ban it without a definition. what will this be though. sugar content or taste??

cointreau and triple sec will be out, so should baileys, tequila. are they going to ban mixing say malibu and vodka?

Ahh sounds simple in theory, but it aint!! I've worked in pubs+clubs for years now and although in a pub its not as bad to tell someone no sorry you've had enough, I myself wont do it unless there is a bouncer around becuase you have no idea how that person is ging to react, and not all but some people will react violently!!
In the club it aint so easy either, becuase you are rushing around not taking much notice of the people who you are serving but more notice of what they are saying and concentrating on the multiple orders in your head! So taking into consideration the state isnt the first concern of many bar staff (not ideal but the truth!)
Last week I refused to serve someone in the club becuase they had had enough and noticeable so by him puking his ring up 10mins before hand in front of the bar, but he came back up to me and asked for another drink, the place was quiet and I said "no, you've had enough and you just got sik". so he pleaded with me and eventually got the idea and went away, but went to another member of staff 2mins later, again refused and instead got someone else to get them drink. This I know becuase I refused him aswell on that grounds later in the night!

My hands are sore now so Im guna stop typing! :)

Maybe they just mean a ban on the "shots" that are aimed at the younger generation like Sidekicks, etc.

I cant' imagine them banning shots taken from bottles like Sambuca etc.
