With relation to Northern Ireland, what does it mean exactly ?
As opposed to, we'll say, just a grass ?

Hmmm, no entry on dictionary.com I see (which surprises me - the word has been around for years wrt the mafia)

Like davelerave says, it's a grass on a bigger scale. Can't remember the name of the person the term was first applied to, but it was a criminal case in a NY court where he took down an entire family with his testimony. Imported into this country, the word means the same thing ("it's a grass on a bigger scale ,one who brings down a load of people" as yer man above correctly put it)

(btw we've an English (as in "language" not as in "evil imperialist oppressors") board now where you can ask all those questions and get answers. Just letting you know it's there - the question was just as relevant in this forum)
