We are on a sub networked network, where we have a dns server (217.114.163.197 and 217.114.163.198).

My network address is 10.3.1.117 and I am getting sh1tty pings to anywhere (400K line) even when there is no one using the network (I used sniffer pro to verify this)

anyway, there is a Linux server here in the building (student apartments) which is only about 10-20 metres away. when I ping it I get the following.

    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>ping 10.3.1.1

Pinging 10.3.1.1 with 32 bytes of data:

    Reply from 10.3.1.1: bytes=32 time=455ms TTL=64
    Reply from 10.3.1.1: bytes=32 time=376ms TTL=64
    Reply from 10.3.1.1: bytes=32 time=435ms TTL=64
    Reply from 10.3.1.1: bytes=32 time=1550ms TTL=64

    Ping statistics for 10.3.1.1:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss)
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 376ms, Maximum = 1550ms, Average = 704ms

    C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>tracert www.boards.ie

    3 102 ms 119 ms 230 ms 10.1.0.2
    4 419 ms 310 ms 418 ms 10.1.0.1
    5 516 ms 609 ms 179 ms 192.168.1.1
    6 * * * Request timed out.
    7 * * * Request timed out.
etc, down to 30 it still times out!

Its driving me mad so I go to administration and the board of directors who tell me that the problem is being cause by us (ie fellow students downloading movies) which may be the case. They say that under section 50, 400kbps is sufficient for us. But it can take me 2 whole mins to download a page from eircom or vodafone or boards, this is not on!

sniffer pro tells me that there are approx 35 to 40 users! They are shafting us big time IMO. They say they have a company which is providing us with this service for 13000euro a year. Comon??? FFS!

The internet and the network have been provided by 2 diff companies!

W@nkers! thats all they are! I've told them of cheaper services but they won't look into it and say that they have been told that they won't get any cheaper services anywhere else. They won't increase our bandwidth cause they say that the problem will/may continue no matter what the bandwidth due to ppl d/l on kazza and morpheous.

Any help/opinions will be greatly appreciated!

Looks like you're on a digiweb satelite service?

Why dont they just block the offending p2p ports, etc, and be decent with the bandwidth?

digiweb, yeah, isn't that expensive tho? 13000?

they have blocked ports but they aren't enough, Kazaa will always find a way around, and all the guys here know how to, eventually it will use port 80 (which it may be using at the mo =):(

A one way trip to a satellite takes approx. 275ms (so I'm told), so you're talking about 450-550ms for an up/down communication.

It's unacceptable to be getting pings that low on a local network though. Have you tried pinging windows boxen that belong to people on your subnet?

Firstly, Calm down take a deep breath and then you'll realise that this is a LAN problem and not a problem with slow internet access.
As for the 12k a year thats called a leased line and thats how much they usually cost.
You should check the your network connection to 10.3.1.1 which is where the large ping time is coming from. There is probably a faulty port in their switch/router.
Are you wired directly into this switch or is it a wireless connection?
Maybe the network card in your machine is faulty, do you get good ping times to any machines on your LAN?

No, I've tired from a few machines, my network card is not faulty. We plug into the wall sockets which plug into switch. I don't understand why the first hop is soo large to the 10.3.1.1 machine!

maybe broadcasts/collisions are occuring, are you sure they are using switch's and not hub's?

btw, 400k is sufficient enough for your needs. On the many site's i've been on over the last few years, plently of places have been sharing 56k modem's between 10-20 users + email, and some still are. Unreal

    1. To the college about the inept management, VPN timeouts and lack of throttling of hogs.
    2. To the local TD (whos that again ?)
