I was just flicking through the 'most disgusting movie' thread, when I wondered, are porn movies legal or illegal? Are some banned and some not? ........not that I'd ever watch that filth.

O yes indeedy it is. Afaik if it (video) doesn't get though the Irish censors (Miss McBiddy and her knitting gang) then it is band. Hardcore doesn't even come to the censors.

How come it is possible to buy porn in sex shops if it's illegal?

    It think either:
    • There's a loophole in the law which allows 'special interest' shops to sell 'special interest' videos without having to clear them with the censor
    • It's part of the terms of their licence

Or perhaps it's legal to purchase but illegal to broadcast?

It was banned in the Uk for ages, then the certifiying system was changed without really telling anyone. Basically you can now get them in the UK as restricted 18, but they can only sell them in shops that are 'adult only'.

We recently had a change in our certifying system too, so I've been wondering if it's been changed here too. I don't want to walk into a sex shop to check though. The guy you bump into on the street on your way out with 'filthy xxx hoes' under your arm could be the guy behind the interview table the next week.

Has anyone noticed all those soft-core porn DVDs up for rent in chartbusters? in some stores there just mixed in with all the rest of the movies.

tis quite embarrasin when im there with me dad (who's half blind when it comes to reading) and points them out asking "whats that one?"

I wonder what would happen, for example, if a guard turned up in your home and you had a video sitting on the kitchen table??

Would you get done for it, or is there some unwritten rules??

Is it overlooked for personal consumption I wonder :D

he'd probably confiscate it, tell you that cos its your first offence your getting away with a warning, then run all the way home and go at himself for the week!!!

There was a porn shop in my area which was closed down for selling porn videos/dvds a year back. I remember reading in the local ****rag newspaper how the gardai cunningly raided it, you can imagine 50 cops busting into the little place and ransacking it for porn to personally scrutinise at home.

    GWAN IRISH LAW

Well there are lots of porn shops around dublin city, i'm told a lot of them are really terrible and sell really tacky stuff that nobody really wants

I went into a sex shop (with a female friend) on saturday to price the dvds especially for you guys, range from €43 to €87(would want to be some super good porn for me to spend that much on a porno). This was in dublin so i can only imagine the price the country boys have to pay, as this shop obviously bought in bulk.

    You're a real soldier Caesar.

Porn is an awful plague on our fine nation and should be stamped out. That sort of lark makes you go blind.

a friend was selling dvd's a while back for around €50 a pop...
afaik you wouldn't pay more than €80 for them in the sex shop in galway.
sounds like a good way to make money really, you'd prolly be able to buy them online for around 10-15 yoyo each.... 400% profit, me likes:)
