Percentage body fat

    After a body fat test you end up with a percentage body fat. Does this figure represent percentage body fat by weight or by volume?

    It's a percentage by weight.

    Hydrostatic measuring involves measuring weight against volume to give a pretty accurate result.

    Cheers, another question about percentage body fat - I've seen various conflicting reports on what the healthy range is for adult males. 12-18%, 12-20% 10-18%. Anyone here want to throw there two cents in?

    For the average 'healthy' adult male, 12-18% would be a reasonable range. I believe you can be a relatively high bf% (e.g. 18%), yet still be healthy and fit. A low bf% does not necessarily beget being healthy and fit (it can actually represent the converse).

    However, if they're bodybuilders, 10-18% (18% being quite high, even during off-season) is more likely. IIRC Lyle McDonald recommened that they don't go > 12% during their off season, as it'll just be harder to drop it coming closer to competition time [Link]

    In any case, for the average healthy male, knowing/tracking bf% isn't really important. It is for bodybuilders, athletes, etc who have stricter diet/training regimes, and need to track fluctuations rigidly, but for the average Joseph Soap on the street, the 'nothing jiggles' or 'do I look good nekkid' rule of thumbs should suffice :)
