I wrote this in the Literature board some time ago.

The bible seems filled with strangenesses...

"Do not build an altar with steps leading up to it; if you do, you expose yourselves as you go up the steps."
    (Exodus 20:24)

    What is a man?
"...any that pisseth against the wall."
    (1 Samuel 25:34)

God orders people to eat turds...
"And thou shalt eat it as barley cakes, and thou shalt bake it with dung that cometh out of a man, in their sight. And the lord said: Even thus shall the children of Israel eat their defiled bread among the Gentiles, whither I will drive them."
    (Ezekiel 4:12-13)

Husband ordered to chop off wife's hand if she helps him in a fight by grabbing his opponent's testicles...
"[if two men are fighting] and the other's wife, willing to deliver her husband out of the hand of the stronger, shall put forth her hand, and take him by the secrets, thou shalt cut off her hand, neither shalt thou be moved with any pity in her regard."
    (Deuteronomy 25:11-12)

    how about:

    matthew 5: 29

"if our right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish then for your whole body to be cast into hell"

    now that's some weird shít

I suppose a lot of stuff gets misunderstood when it's translated from hebrew (was that it) to english,
if our right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish then for your whole body to be cast into hell
I interprit it as meaning it's worth going through pain in this life, if it'll mean favour in the next life

Strange, my Mathew 5:29 says "And, if thy right eye scandalise thee, pluck it out and cast it from thee. For it is expedient for thee that one of thy members should perish rather than that thy whole bodybe cast into hell."

Douay version bible, is this a different bible to yours? I don't know what a Douay bible is however.

I'd take that to mean - if your thoughts make you think you are sinning - ignore the problem but suffer pain. It is better for you if you lose a friend than lose yourself. Personally. I don't quite like the fact that 'God' would say that to me, I find that a rather saddening passage.

Makes sense to me. I'd rather lose a hand than my life.

Besides, it begs the much harder question: "How can ones hand cause one to sin?"

Well first off, most bible quotes from the old testiment are now out-dated by the new testiment. Jesus was sent to change the message of God. He brought the meesage of love.

As for the mathew quote. I believe it is a metaphor as with most things in the bible are, and should not be taken literally. My believe is that the eye represents a part of you spiritally, and that the message is to remove or change this defect of your character or spirit if you don't wnat to spend an enterity in hell.

In terms of bible quotes, you can't take them out of context and expect them to make sense. Give me any classical text and I can parse odd or befuddling quotes from it; War and Peace, Crime and Punishment, Cathy Kelly's new opus.

As opposed to the previous message from God which was one of well.. pretty much i see God of the Old Testament as being more Evil than Satan was ever said to be!!

I wouldn't have called God of the old testament evil but he is a lot less forgiving.

The old testement was god telling the israelites how to deal with people who go against him. In the new testemont, he says be good and love thy enemy, and I'll sort them out myself. Ruthless, but ultimately fair

    Gordon,

I rather have the feeling that it means you should not listen or pay attention to that what could cause you to sin, for it is better to ignore it than become a sinner yourself.

alas, my little 'eye' has spied many naughty things, and I like what I see!

    Heh.

I can't edit a post that is 2 or 3 days old so I'll say here that I should have said that the book I got those quotes from was a great book by Richard Zacks - An Underground Education. Afaik they don't print the book anymore though :(
