I play the Trumpet. Well used to play it loads, keep meaning to get back into it. I dunno which one I'd recommend. As far as instruments go, I think they're both very difficult, I mean there's no point in getting one and expecting to teach yourself. You really need to get a teacher to make you do all those boring scales and lip excercises if you expect to get good.

Trumpet might be a bit better for gettin the spotlight solos etc. :) Although trombone is pretty cool also.
If you wanna get into a good band, I reckon there'd be more demand for trombonists just because they are not as popular as trumpeters.

As for second hand, there shouldn't be a problem, just make sure its not dented or rusting! You can buy good brass cleaning tools, give it a good wash and you're grand.
Shops I'd recommend for brass instruments are the
Educational Music Services, 22 Mountjoy Square. and
    McCullough Pigott on Suffolk St.

Best way to decide which you wanna play I suppose just listen to your jazz/ska and decide which you'd most like to play!

Which you wanna be: the next Dizzy Gillespie or the next Fred Wesley??

ok cool, thanks dude. what kinda music do you play?
how many years did you play b4 you were competant(sp?)?
i play bass so i'm not totally new to playing an instrument.
hmmm, still the question of which to choose, i was leaning towards trumpet, but i dont want to get into an already saturated market...are there many trumeters in dublin at the moment?

Hehe, funny that, bass is my main instrument.
I play jazz, funk, ska, reggae on the bass. As for trumpet, never really played in a band but do intend picking it up again, I'd like to play jazzy music or ska on that. Ska is easy enough, you just gotta have tight rhythm and be able to hit the notes spot on.
I was getting lessons for about 6-8 years, went as far as grade 7 on the trumpet. I'd say it would take 2-3 years minimum to get real good at it, depending on yourself and the time you put in.

As for the trumpet 'market', it's far from saturated, there isn't an abundance of brass players in Ireland in the first place. And out of those who do play, only some of them would be into playing in jazz/ska bands really. I started out in a concert band, it's upto the individual to take it further than that.

I'd recommend the trumpet if you're willing to put in the effort. Even goto those shops I mentioned, and they'll let you try them out. Sometimes people can me more suited to one instrument because of like things like the shape/thickness of their lips etc.

One difference between the Trombone and Trumpet is that the Trumpet keys pre-define each pitch. The trombone silde does not have exact markers where to play each note. That doesn't make any sence does it??? What I am trying to say is that the Trombone is more like a fretless bass where the position you need to put your finger (slide) is not clearly marked so it is easier to be a little sharp or flat. How are your ears?

If either of you bass players know anyone who needs a new bass I have a P-Bass (American) and a Musicman Stingray for sale. Cheers.

    price check on those basses?

    Ooooh a stingray?
I'm planning on buying one at some stage in the future.
No money at the mo, will have to get me a job after college...but I might give you a shout at some stage over the next month or two. Maybe you'll have sold it by then but I'll give you a shout anyway.
Whats the stats on it? How many strings, condition, colour?
what kinda price range? Got a pic?

That's true alright bout the trombone, I suppose you'd want a better ear for it, although it could be easier for improvising as you get used to knowing what sound comes from what position, whereas with the trumpet you kinda need to know what note you wanna playwhen improvising...I hope that makes sense!

Here are some specs on the basses. Please let me know if you have any other questions. I am in Fairview if you would like to play any of these. All of my guitars are in new condition. They have basically just sat in their cases. A couple of the nicer ones are finding their way onto my recordings though none have been played for more than 2-3 hours.

    P-Bass:
    Fender American P-Bass
Black with a white pick guard and a rosewood neck.
Comes with a locking hard-shell case, strap, lead, strap-locks.
This would run about 1600-1800 euro in the shops.

Price 1150 euro. This bass has a small scratch on the BACK of the body. That
helped me get a great price.

    Stingray:
    http://www.ernieball.com/mmonline/specs/instruments_stingray.html
4String, black on black with maple neck Musicman fitted case. Hit above link for specs.
Musicman is the best bass I have ever heard both live and in the studio. It has a really well defined attack and great low end.
Looking for 1499 Euro. I believe these are around 1800 new in shops as well.

    Cheers,
    Peter
