Can't Access Servers Locally with internet IP

I have set up apache and ftp/telnet on a debian box.
I can access the servers if i use its local ip address on the lan.
I can access the servers if I use the internet ip address but only from shell accounts and remote accounts.
The problem is, if I use my internet ip from any machines on the same lan as the server it won't access any of them, I know I can work around this but its bugging me and I want to know how to fix it for educational purposes:)

    Thanks again lads,

Sounds like some sort of routing issue. If youre using the Internet address to get from the client machine inside the LAN to the server, which is also on the same LAN.

Thinking logically, the traffic destined for this server is being sent out your gateway to the internet. Once it hits the first router it is seen that the destination and return address of the packets are the same (ie that of the gateway) so theyre probably being dropped there.
That or they're being dropped at the gateway, because the gateway is sending them to itself.. if you get me.

Maybe setting up a static route to redirect all traffic that is going for the internet address of this machine, to it's LAN address..

Feel free to tell me I'm wrong coz I'm not entirely sure about this.

I can access the server from the client machine if i use its local address - but i can't access the server if i use its internet address.
However other machines outside the lan can assess the server using its internet address.

How is the debian box connected to the internet? Is it through the same LAN as the other machines that can't access it using the debian box's internet address or does it have its own connection to the internet?

    Check your firewall.
