Which of the DSL options out there is better for online gaming performance? And of course... why? Thanks in advance. :D

Esat IMO - pings are very very low to all the gaming servers even on the 90 euro/month package. On average 50ms lower than eircoms 90/m package.

    Pings from esat to clarity:

    64 bytes from clarity.jolt.co.uk (195.149.21.11): icmp_seq=2 ttl=248 time=24.8 ms
    64 bytes from clarity.jolt.co.uk (195.149.21.11): icmp_seq=3 ttl=248 time=24.5 ms
    64 bytes from clarity.jolt.co.uk (195.149.21.11): icmp_seq=4 ttl=248 time=24.2 ms
    64 bytes from clarity.jolt.co.uk (195.149.21.11): icmp_seq=5 ttl=248 time=24.4 ms
    64 bytes from clarity.jolt.co.uk (195.149.21.11): icmp_seq=6 ttl=248 time=25.6 ms
    64 bytes from clarity.jolt.co.uk (195.149.21.11): icmp_seq=7 ttl=248 time=24.3 ms

Those are tiny in comparison to Eircoms which on average would be 70-75ms, now I dont know what VIA or Eircom or Esat's RADSL services are like as I dont have access to any of them yet.

    Paul

p.s. i think i posted eircom pings on another thread here or on ioffl forum.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 832 ✭✭✭Sloth

Reports of Eircom's pings (and subsequently Via's) that you give there are now out of date as interleaving has been turned off.
I'd go for Via mainly because they use ethernet which means you can play online with xbox live whereas as far as I know Eircom use USB modems. I won't know for sure what type of pings I get from Via's service until next week but I'll give a full listing then of all the pings I get.
    Roll on next week then.

those pings from esat are pretty damn sweet ;)

if netsource's pings are disappointing I'm going to esat, forget the cap, I'm in it for the gaming

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 53 ✭✭Conlai

You might be a little bit surprised with the amount you will download when playing online with ADSL when in comparison with a standard dailup.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,046 ✭✭✭Dustaz

Not really conlai, ive never gone near my cap due to gaming.

Via are potentially awful for gaming since it is uncapped. If you end up on an exchange with a couple of warez monkeys your ping will suffer. Takeup is low at the moment so this is unlikely, but the possibility remains.

Sloth: You can use usb modems, ethernet modems, routers etc with any companys DSL.

    ?

My ping is the same as it always was. Can anyone point me to any proof that Eircom have turned interleaving off?

Pings have been turned off for RADSL. If you have the earlier product, and haven't switched, you won't see any change in your ping times.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 250 ✭✭Cian

Damnation. Why can't they just switch it off for all of us. :*(
I thought the point of radsl was to serve a wider range of areas, I would have thought they'd leave interleaving on for that.

Eircom use both. I've got an ethernet modem from eircom, am switching to RADSL and won't have to switch to a USB modem. The only reason to go to Via would be for the domain name, more money out of your pocket, and no cap. :)

    flamegrill,
pings well improved on eircoms RADSL service..

Dustaz, it's true that maybe you'll have bad pings if your stuck on a bad exchange but since I'm going for the SoHo connection with a better contention ratio thats not going to really be an issue.
Interleaving is a thing of the past now for most now, I've been guaranteed that it will be off when I have the connection installed.

Please clarify what you mean by saying that interleaving is a thing of the past for most now....

Are you referring only to RADSL connections or not?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 185 ✭✭crazyasafox

I would not get your hopes up Sloth about the interleaving being turned off of the SOHO package. As far as I know netsources's SOHO package is eircoms I-Stream solo which my mate has and the pings are still the same.As far as I can tell interleaving is only turned off on netsources radsl packages.I have mailed them asking to clarify this but no response yet.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 931 ✭✭✭c0y0te

... the general concensus is, given a choice between Esat's DSL or €eircon's DSL (residential package).. the best option is Esat?

    That right?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,439 ✭✭✭ando

    yes

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 832 ✭✭✭Sloth

Well when I rang them yesterday I was told that interleaving was definitly off on all packages. What more do you want me to say? When I asked about the SoHo package I was told again that it definitly would be off.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 185 ✭✭crazyasafox

As you say Sloth you can only repeat what you are told, and as far as I can remember you were the first to bring to light the fact that interleaving was being turned off in the first place(which at the moment has only been proven on radsl). And even though you were told by some of the longer posters here that interleaving would never be turned off??Point being is never say never.I realy hope I am wrong but as of yet the pings are still hight on the mates package.

What's the story with esat & their usb modem. I was planning to use a ethernet modem through a hub in order to give in order to use 3 pc's and a laptop on the single connection. Is this possible
    with esat.

    Thanks

can anyone confirm whether interleaving is turned off for Eircom / Esat RDSL offerings ?

Louise, from Netsource has said in the IrelandOffLine Forum that eircom have interleaving "toned down" so to speak. I've definitely got better pings today on RADSL.

Seemingly eircom told porkies initially about interleaving being switched off. Imagine that.

Why have eircom suddenly only 'toned down' interleaving,
what a **** ing joke, I ordered my service from via on a few criteria one being interleaving off (admittedly not the main criteria but still). Why are eircom suddenly reverting on this??
Surely a complaint must be lodged about their misinformation..

Please note i am not blaming via in any way, how were they to know.. :(

so which gives the best deal and speed ?

    Esat/eircom or netsource

And what exactly is interleaving ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,892 ✭✭✭bizmark

interleaveing is a selfcorrecting thing on the line (not techy but i bleave true) which pushs up your pings so games will l........a.....g

im going for esat now seeming their interleaveing is off and should be at lest 20ms faster that netsources (vias) its 20 euro cheaper 2 and u get to use their modem for 90 euro (it maybe usb but i dont care and i wont have to spend more on modems that could well not work with esat)

so i changed my mind from netsources to esat forget the cap i dont download anything but patchs for my games (and thats around 900 meg a month out of a 5 gig cap so no biggy)

esat im calling ya in 2 hours!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,892 ✭✭✭bizmark

well seems esat is bull****ing about the 90 euro plus modem

its now JUMPED to 145 euro idoits

As far as I know its an eircom exchange. I inquired about Esats previous ADSL packages but they weren't available to me. So from this I'm guessing its eircom only.

I'll probably get Esats RADSL when it comes out, but so far netsmart and ISDN hasn't been bad for gaming. I just hope I don't go over the 5gig cap.

On another issue are ethernet and USB modems just as good for pings? I only have one computer so I don't need an ethernet modem for hooking up to a home network.
