Gunnes is the cheapest and most helpful place in dublin! Especially if they know u are a student

It's been said a lot already but Gunnes are great. Friendly people who know what they're talking about and reasonable prices.

Okay, this is preaching to the choir, but yet another high recommendation for Gunnes! They've been fantastic every time I've been in there, and TWICE have ordered me things that have arrived two days later - a skylight filter, and a LowePro bag. The LowePro TLZ 2 bag was €24! I've never seen it cheaper elsewhere, and it's nearly twice that price on some online shops.

Y'know how some shops say they'll order you something in, and they never do? Well, Gunnes say it, and mean it. Great shop. I hope Jessops doesn't hurt their business too much.

Hi, I'm sorry to bother you, but I'm desperate.
My girlfriend owns a nikon coolpix 4500 and I'm trying to locate a suitable tripod for some landscape work she wishes to do... can anyone recommend anything to me, I am looking for e-needles in virtual haystacks here... please help if you can?

I bought a tripod in Argos last week and I used it for video and stills and it seems to be fine. It cost about €25. This is it http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=2501&productId=103020&clickfrom=name

Thank you Joo.... but tell me, do you own a Nikon Coolpix 4500? I'm worried that the Hama may not be adaptable

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,297 ✭✭✭joolsveer

No I own an Olympus 5000 which has a standard tripod fixing (I think it's called a 1/4" whitworth screw) as have the other cameras I have.

i just dropped 35mm film (24) in there today, bit pricey - 7.40

as opposed to 6.50 for that place on dawson st. , mightn't be much, but when you are getting a couple of rolls done , it all adds up :)

I was going to a few times but was recently strongly advised not to use pixmania. Apparently things go "out of stock" that were in stock at time of ordering and especially if you do not order the recommended packs.

I had a very good experience buying my camera from Pixmania last week. Excellent price and 1 working day delivery. Although I did opt for one of their package deals.

My Pentax ME Super SLR (bought in 1981) has a (common, I think) fault with its winder. I'm keen to get it fixed. I had a dreadful experience with DML http://www.dml.ie a couple of years back (arrogant, crap service) so am keen to find somewhere else in Dublin. Any recommendations as to somewhere I could trust with my precious SLR?

    Thanks

    Simon
p.s. yes, I think Gunns of Wexford St. (478 1226) are great too. Got B&W film at a great price & bought my Canon A70 there, they beat everyone's price on request. And such lovely people.

regarding 7dayshop.com, ye should be aware that they do not have any contactable phone numbers. All communications is done through email.

I tried to buy some stuff off them, and asked them to contact me; I'm still waiting....

Also I have read some people stating that they import from the US, and that this may result in warranty problems.

Personally I get a bad vibe off them.

I recently took the advice of a colleague who researched buying a digital camera and decided to follow his lead and order a Panasonic DMC-FZ5 from pixmania.com

    What a disaster!

    First problem:
They couldn't get to grips with the difference between my creidt card billing address and the address I wanted the camera delivered to - work.

    Second problem:
The emial from pixmania giving details of the delivery wouldn't support a click-through to the DHL tracking portal.

    Third problem:
An anoymus DHL courier arrived at my home address with the box - minus any documentation and literally did a little dance on my doorstep to get me to sign for it. I discovered that morning that the delivery might come to my home address so I worked from home that day. "lucky me"!

    Fourth problem:
The box seemed a bit light, "OK", I thought "must be a part shippment" So after checking the security seal I signed for the box. When I brought it inside, it turns out only the additional carry case was in the box. No €400 camera! Called pixmania - "we shipped that sir...", called DHL "no, no other box in the shippment, we delivered it from Paris to you."

It actually took a moment or two to realise what happened, the bottom of the box was carefully opened without distrubing the security packaging and the camera was stolen while in transit with DHL.

I won't go into the hilarious incident with the local Gardai with me reporting a suspected crime in a country unknown! Monthy Python stuff - really!

I spent a week trying to get DHL to issue a "Loss File" to pixmania before they would dispatch another camera. Finally they did.

Cutting this story short, the replacement camera was again shipped to the wrong address [pixmania's fault again] and this time I took my time to make sure there was a camera in the box. But after I signed for it I took it all out to have a play with it and discovered that again it had been tampered with in transit with DHL - this time the battery and SD card were stolen!

Pixmania couldn't send the stolen parts so I shipped it back to them.

I think I'll buy my new camera in a shop, in Dublin, from a person who will put the complete camera in a box and hand it to me!!!!

    Caveat Emptor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where on Wexford Street is Gunnes?
And where on Georges St is the Camera Exchange?

Have found the deals online, but want to make sure there isnt a chance of getting the camera for similar prices in town.

Where on Wexford Street is Gunnes?

Opposite Whelans. Wexford St is only about 30 yards long

Anybody know how much Gunnes charge for a Sony DSC-S90 ?

I can get it online for 223+13 shipping.
If I get a chance I'll pop in there tomorrow.

...don't laugh. Seriously. Their prices have been beating pixmania, nomatica, technikdirekt and pretty much everywhere I've seen lately. At least for the big stuff. Take the Canon EOS 350 dSLR - it's about 740 with them.

I bought a camcorder from them also, with a bag and tapes and 1-3 day delivery for less than the cost of the same item (minus accessories) from technikdirekt (DHL were kind enough to loose the package).

You have to go to Gunns. It's been said so many times, but they really are the nicest people. Went in today, and they were happy to answer my stream of questions. Also, the girl was happy to let me try a 10-22mm that had €850 on the case!

Right now, they have the 350D for 593.00 GBP
A currency conversion shows that as 867.763 EUR.

Pixmania have it now for €813

I bought a lens a few months ago off Pixmania with no problems, but im a bit wary of them with all the horror stories particularly related to cameras :(

I used to buy from 7dayshop, and until last May was relatively happy with them. Now I'm convinced they don't really care about their customers.
It's a long story, but you can read more about it in my blog post about my experiences.
Do a Google search for "7dayshop" and read through some of the customer reviews. A small few are positive but many more are not.

I would without hesitation urge everyone avoid them.

One the other hand, Technikdirekt, Pixmania, and ac-foto are quite good! (links and commentary in my post)

www.technikdirekt.de is incredible value, far superior to any Irish shop. The after sales service is very good too if you do encounter a problem. I'm about to get a new canon lens (ef 70-200 l) which is €600 there and €900 in all the major shops in town. Enough said

    I've started buying my studio equipment from;
    http://www.foto-mueller.at

    Excellent so far.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,084 ✭✭✭dubtom

I've just found this Forum, I'd would never buy new equipment in Ireland, it's basically a rip off. I buy from www.ac-foto.de. I have not found cheaper prices anywhere in Europe on the net. I recently bought Canon D20 for 1200 odd euro's. They actually included the 18-55 lens for free because they had a deal going that I didn't spot.A plus for me is that they deliver COD, but their delivery is usually about 40 euro, so cheaper to buy in bulk rather than a one off purchase.

You can and will find value in Ireland, as many have already mentioned Gunns in Wexford Street Dublin, Camera Exchange and if you want some special deals next week try Berminghams ( Burgh Quay Dublin ) sale from Saturday 12th November.
I know somebody who Went to Barker Photographic ( barkerphotographic.ie) in Cork only last week to buy a Flight sized camera bag to bring home a Long lens from the States thinking he was going to save a €1,000 only to find they could supply it from stock at the same price without the worry of customs! Barkers also specialise in Studio Equipment, Digital Accessories and Darkroom. Give them a call as I have found they will haggle!

Can't find cameras or lenses on their website.

Perhaps if these Irish suppliers could update their websites with their latest camera models and prices they might attract some customers from the people who automatically click on the German websites.

Or what, do they expect me to phone them and start grovelling over price, and then be all grateful when they knock €100 off or throw in a 'free' memory card, and then wait 3 months for the delivery to come in?

To be honest, I just couldn't be arsed doing business with Irish suppliers.

Me neither,I bought a D20 +lens from Germany for 1270 euro, 1800+ cons Camera are charging for the same kit. We pay 21% vat here and in Germany it's 16%. A difference of 5% vat but yet the price is 600 euro more. do the math, we're being ripped off in this country.
