    Getting interesting is'nt it?

3 losses on the bounce by Newcastle, Chelsea loose today Liverpool beat Toffees and suddenly its all up for grabs again. Suddenly I'm a bit more hopeful...

I actually think it could go to the final game of the season we must beat Everton West Sham will be playing for pride and hopefully Fullham will be on their summer holidays. Chelsea have a far superior goal difference to Liverpool though.:)

4th place is auto qualify right? How many non-auto places are there?

Only 3 pts between Chelsea/Everton/Liverpool but I reckon Chelsea will still take it :[

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,386 ✭✭✭smuckers

no if Chelsea finish 4th They have play one qualifying game to get into The CL knowing CFC they'll feck it up. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,503 ✭✭✭Makaveli

3rd place also results in qualification.
Utd finished 3rd last year and had to qualify.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,538 ✭✭✭PiE

Ah right... It was 3rd that was made auto qual this year then wasn't it?

    "Only 3 pts between Chelsea/Everton/Liverpool..."

I read it wrong earlier, it's 3 pts between Newcastle/Chelsea/Liverpool, not Everton :]

Huge day yesterday with Chelsea, Newcastle and Everton all losing. I think the Pool could even sneak into 3rd place ahead of Newcastle. They look like they've hit the wall, Chelsea have blown their chance too. Come on you feckin Reds. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,386 ✭✭✭smuckers

They look like they've hit the wall, Chelsea have blown their chance too.

Well its Liverpool and Everton who are behind us so I don't think that statement is strictly true.:)

I should pay more attention to the fixtures list! Everton play Chelsea today, so for Liverpool a draw would be best I guess...though Le Boss wants Everton to win, which is confident of him cos that means Liverpool must beat Charlton.

edit> Liverpool 2 1 Charlton. Talk about leaving it late...
Newcastle stumbles again with a draw and Chelsea must be feeling chipper at the mo!

    Mike.

Phew! I didnt think the Pool were gonna win that one, we never come from behind to win these days! Thankyou Sami and Stevey. Very good win for Chelsea too, probably a safe 4th spot for the Blues just behind the mighty fantastic super best team ever with fabulous world-class talented players all over the pitch ;) :ninja:

it is all setting up nicely for the last few games. Liverpool were really lucky if what Houllier says is right. something along the lines of a poor performance.
Chelsea didn't play all that well today but Zola pulled out the magic again. what a goal. this is definately the best finish to a season in a long time.
West Ham have the chance of surviving. the only team to survive after being bottom at Christmas if they pull it off. Glenn Roeder (sp?) needs to go

Everton were poor playing the long ball too often this season we were average but we got the job done Jesper was super and De Lucas actually played well The Geordies have fecked up big time.:)

    Liverpool's remaining matches are:
    West Brom away (26th)
    Man City home (3rd)
    Chelsea away (11th)

    Chelsea's remaining matches are:
    Fulham home (26th)
    West Ham away (3rd)
    Liverpool home (11th)

    Newcastle's remaining matches are:
    Sunderland away (26th)
    Birmingham home (3rd)
    West Brom away (11th)

    Everton's remaining matches are:
    Aston Villa home (26th)
    Fulham away (3rd)
    Man Utd home (11th)

Looking at the Newcastle have probably got the easiest run in. I can see them taking 9 points from it.
Everton I think are out of it now. Having lost their last two games and having to face Utd on the final day of the season, they'll probably have to settle for a Uefa Cup spot.
Chelsea and Liverpool should win both of their games before they face each other. West Ham may be tricky for Chelsea, fighting for survival and London rivals. But there's a good chance it'll go down to the Chelsea - Liverpool match to decide the final spot. It's pretty exciting anyway.

Liverpool seem to want it now. They some how got the victory today, it came late, but it means they are actually willing to fight for it. I think they'll just about get a qualification spot.

Here's a look at how they stand right now:
                       Pld W L D GF GA Pts
    1 Man. Utd 35 22 8 5 66 32 74
    2 Arsenal 34 21 8 5 71 36 71
    3 Chelsea 35 18 9 8 65 35 63
    4 Newcastle 35 19 5 11 59 46 62
    5 Liverpool 35 17 10 8 53 37 61
    6 Everton 35 16 8 11 45 44 56

Well even tho i hate them i think chelsea will finish 3rd. The class they have i.e Hasselbaink, Zola, Cudicini, Desailly, Lampard, Gallas, Gudjohnsen. Only 5 of Chelseas whole squad are over 30 which means there definetely 1 for the future. Liverpool haven't got the consistency and Everton just aren't quite good enuf to finish in the top 3

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 679 ✭✭✭ciano

Newcastle defo have the easiest run in. I can see both Chelsea and Liverpool getting 6 points from their next 2 games. So it all comes down to the last match of the season. Should be very interesting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,386 ✭✭✭smuckers

The goal diff for Chels cud settle it in the end. :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,672 ✭✭✭Wolf

To be honest I think Newcastle will just about take thrid back and hold it, the real question is who will come 4th and as it has been said last game of the season is the one to look out for.

Though I also believe that liverpool dont deserve it as they have been really poor all season.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,392 ✭✭✭jonno

I don't think it will go down to goal difference. I defo think it's going down to the game in Stamford Bridge. Liverpool left it late yesterday but they've left themselves with a huge chance (and with Heskey with a back injury now - it might be a blessing in is disguise). Everton are out of it now I't say. Even if they win all their games it won't be enough IMO.

They were unbeaten after the first 13 games. They were doing well then crashed and burned, now they are climbing back up a bit. They havent been really poor all season.

[edit]first 13 games not 10. Also they've won 6 out of the last 7, the one they lost was to Man Utd.[/edit]

Also considering they have a chance of finishing in third still its not too bad ... I think that a lot of Liverpool fans got ahead of themselves and started dreaming too early ; Depending on who comes in/goes out - I can't see LFC winning next year either (unless a major shake-up happens ) :) but maybe I'm just pessimistic

can't see newcastle losing any of the remainders either, though sunderland may put up a big fight for the local rivals.

would feel much safer going into the liverpool game if chelsea were already safe or 3 ahead meaning chels through on goal difference and scousers finish 5th , however Chelsea have 2 derby games and west ham although they really deserve a beating from chels after their cheeky / poxy win at the bridge always put up a decent fight, fulham...who knows, at least the pool suffer on visits to stamford bridge of late !!
anyway it wouldn't be fair on other CL teams / supporters to have to watch heskey next season ;-)
    go on you blues !

As a Liverpool fan i have to warn you that the following message will be utterly biased:

Liverpool can do it i think, they should get 6 points out of their next two games, and so should Chelsea. If Newcastle were to lose either against Sunderland (extremely heated local derby at the Stadium of Light i might add, so it will be by no means an easy game), or Birmingham (who are utterly unrelenting at the minute, and looking very very good), then Chelsea and Liverpool could play out that last game for a draw and both qualify, unless Newcastle were to utterly thrash West Brom and boost their GD.

Reckon thats how it could pan out, but its one of the most interesting finishes to a season that i remember.

I think Newcastle will finish third with Chelsea fourth. I hope Newcastle make it because they did well in Europe this year and I think they need to build on that experience as quickly as they can. I would also like to see Chelsea in it because usually I cant stand watching Liverpool play anymore, but I enjoy watching Chelsea play their football.

The great thing about it is, every team's fate is in their own hands, none are relying on other teams to lose. If they win their last 3 games, they qualify. Its gonna be exciting. My bets are on Liverpool and Chelsea, cos i think the toon army are gonna slip up against either Sunderland or Birmingham. Nothing would please Sunderland more than to be the cause of Newcastle not qualifying for the CL. It would be the only high point in their otherwise terrible season. I don't know if Liverpool and Chelsea would just play out that last game, cos Liverpool will have their eye on 3rd place, and they could be their own worst enemy if they try to get too much out of that game. But then, I wouldn't complain if they won it.

Transfer News: Chelsea will bid 7m for Joe Cole in summer if we get into The CL, Dino Baggio is a done deal depending on The CL also and the under 21 portugeese midfielder Teixeira is lined up also.:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,164 ✭✭✭Space Coyote

Dino Baggio ! Jeez they kept that one quiet. Good move, it could revitalise his career. I'll be a bit upset if yis get JC though, he sposed to be moving to the Pool, alledgedly.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,832 ✭✭✭Waylander

What age is Dino Baggio, he must be early to mid thirties at this stage? Dunno about that as a good signing. It would have been 10 years ago.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,386 ✭✭✭smuckers

He's 30 yeah Texeria is a much better prospect, the only thing about Cole is that he doesn't score goals and doesn't really influence a game but CR cud turn him into an all round better player.:)

    pld the 'Pool today.

6-0 atm. Owen 4. Baros sparkling.

    I smell a 3rd. place :)

    gj Fulham!

damn Newcastle! Disallowed goal last min for S'land. :(

West Brom 0 6 Liverpool :D Milan Baros should have had 3 or 4 rather than 2

    Chelsea 1 1 Fulham hmmmmmm.

    Sunderland 0 1 Newcastle

    Mike.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,386 ✭✭✭smuckers

Pathtetic absolutely Pathetic what was that Chels? why didn't Cole come on? we can wave goodbye to that CL place if we lose next week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,503 ✭✭✭Makaveli

Well this is getting even more exciting.
Great result for Liverpool today, Chelsea will not be happy.
If the slim chance of a 3 way tie occurs Newcastle will go out on goal difference. These may be an important six goals.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,694 ✭✭✭Dingatron

Reckon Liverpool are seriously back in the running for a spot. It will be down to the Liverpool v Chelsea match on the last day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,386 ✭✭✭smuckers

    1. Robbie Fowler scores a hattrick, Chels beat Hammers so the final game doesn't matter cause of gf
    2. Chels draw with Hammers and beat Liverpool.

I'm not making excuses but did anyone see Lee Clark having the ball miles out of playbefore Fulham broke c'mon Ellery u must be blind as a bat? still Petit switched off and Dessa ended up on his backside.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,164 ✭✭✭Space Coyote

Yeah I thought that ball was deffo out of play. Still, Chelsea should have battered Fulham, only got themselves to blame. Big big win for Newcastle, looks like they've secured one of the CL spots anyway. Gits. If it comes down to the last day, who knows what will happen? Chelsea usually hammer the Pool at Stamford Bridge, but I think this one will be very tight and I can see the Pool sneaking it. Here's hoping anyway...

Now see that's what happens when you don't play Heskey up front. You score six. What a partnership that is? Here's hoping GH sees what happened.

I agree Newcastle could still lose it on goal difference. And with Shearer missing for the rest of the season you would wonder who will claw back that goal difference. And what about Chelsea's missed chance on Sat. One would wonder how they have such a strong goal difference. It's in Liverpool's hands now. As long as they don't slip up to Man City and carry this momentum to Stamford Bridge it should be theres.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGHHHHHHHHH!

Still at least West Ham did us a favour!

Can't wait for next weekend, ahem.

    Mike.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,148 ✭✭✭Ronan|Raven

Well at least we wont goto Chelsea next weekend and sit back playing for the draw which would have been good enough before Anelka got his 2nd :) At least we have to go there and attack! and actually play. Whereas one could have been faced with 0-0 after 89 minutes with Owen and Baros been subbed for Diao and Biscan and then Zola popping up and scoring :) could still happen but one thing is for sure this is one if not the closest season in a long time with a lot of teams both chasing european slots and avoiding relegation slots. Last day here we come .

I think we'll beat Liverpool it won't be easy we were appaling yesterday and only 3 players can hold their heads high Lampard Carlo and Marcel zola (to a certain extent) the rest were dreadul.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,386 ✭✭✭smuckers

Losing to Hammers was the most predictiable result of the season a new manger with Roeder in hospital and fighting for relegation throw in a manic who comes off the bench and scores it was inevitable.

Massive result by the massive city. Really s*it on the spitting scousers now didn't he. For a team who were going to win the PL this season now having to go to the last day of the season to get into the CL is a bit of a come down. But it is only 15 years and counting now so cannot expect any more really.

    Gwan the massive city

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,392 ✭✭✭jonno

    G'wan the Hammers;)

I've been thinking that maybe the fact that Liverpool need a win at Stamford Bridge will result in attacking football. If the Pool were going there just needing the point, I think everyone would agree that we would be in for yet another defensive display. This could work out in Pool's favour and they are carrying good away form into the match.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,912 ✭✭✭Washout

Cant see chelsea trying to play defensively...not in their nature to do so. but if they do they will lose.

    Come on Chelsea!!
