problems with UPS

I know it's not very specific to unix, but where else should i put this?

I hooked up an APC SmartUPS 700 last night in a very happy mood altogether, until strange things started happening. Computer (server, of course, which makes it all the worse) turned itself off and back on again. I thought that perhaps it was something to do with the sensitivity of the ups, which was at its highest setting, but switching it down didn't have any effect. about an hour later the same thing happened.

Since then I've taken the UPS out of the picture altogether and the server still repeatedly reboots itself. I thought perhaps this was a software problem (it seemed to be happening around every hour and twenty minutes), but these ideas were disspelled when the server rebooted itself halfway thru bootup.

I'm becoming increasingly pissed off and since this is my server in question, i can't listen to any music (!), access the net with ease, use email or do anything else computer related really.

Any help or ideas on the matter would be very welcome. Cheers.

Ok have you looked at the server logs? They should give you information about what's forcing the reboot. If there are no errors it may be a physical or bios problem.

Yeah i'm quite convinced it's a physical problem - the logs show nowt suspicious before rebooting - but what the problem is itself is beyond me.

Booted up on the debian install cd last night so i could perform a e2fsck -y /dev/hdb1 to fix the dire state my /home partition's in. Woke up this morning and it was still turned on, at the prompt, after having completed its task - it never rebooted once.

Same thing happens if i reboot into windows (it's a dual boot box).. It doesn't reboot itself unexpectedly. This would lead me to believe that it's actually a linux-specific problem...

I was convinced that it was a hardware problem but now i'm pretty sure it's a problem with my linux install itself. Anyone ever have any problems similar to these?

    :(
