Mac to PC Networking

Ok, I have to admit I know little to nothing about Macs I do know enough about networks to set it up if they were both PC's.

Thing is I have a Powerbook I think their called, with a network port. Compatible with RJ45. I have a hub and PC. I want to connect the two. The Laptop has a Virtual PC running which emulates Win 95 which I've tried unsuccessfully to connect to the network. I was looking at the actual MAC side though, the MAC OS is still available and I was trying to hook that up.

Any suggestions for either course would be greatly appreciated, I have to admit I'm sorta out of my league.

This link should take you to Apple's description of how to network a Mac and a PC together.

It's easy man...I'd never used a mac before last Friday and had it networked to my pc within about 5 minutes....just go to the systems settings on the mac then click network and assign and IP address etc. to the Ethernet interface just like you would under Windows.

If it's OSX you can go to the command prompt and check the connection with ping.

I don't know how you'd go about mapping drives and stuff I was just using the link for file transfer which I achieved using FTP. Worked like a charm :)

just wondering will i be able to network an pc(win xp) and an ibook together when i get my rasdl in a few weeks

my dad qwns the ibook and he wants to have a connection too in his room

anything i need to know or is it that simple to do( ie get a router, some cat 5 cable link them both up to the router which in turn is linked to the dsl modem, set them both up via the settings and there we go dsl for two computers)

    is it that easy?
will i have to buy ethernet cards or nic cards for them or does the router take care of the addressing?

just want to clear some of this up
    cheers in advance

Why the router , a cross over cable will link the two computers and your can use windows internet connection sharing which does all the routing for you ? Save your self the price of a hub and router !

You're misunderstanding what the purpose of a router is.. A router connects separate networks together, not computers. What you need is either a hub or, if you want to minimise overhead, a switch.

No, you need a computer which will act as a gateway to the net.

Configuring the Macto use ethernet is simple enough. Its preferable to have OS X 10.2.x though !

In the applications folder ther is another folder called Utilities, select the Directory Access icon and in the panel select SMB an activate it. then click Configure and enter the name of the Workgroup that your PC belongs to. Close this now.

In the Preferences panel select sharing and enable Windows File Sharing.

Now in the Preferences panel Select Accounts and edit your user name and ensure that "allow user to log in from windows" is enabled.

After this you should be able to see your mac in the Network Browser on the PC. If you are still having problems you can contact me here !

    Regards
