Has anyone had this installed by either Eircom or Esat? I have a horrible feeling that they will struggle when faced with my flat panle iMac. Also, does anyone know if the firewall thats built in sufficient to protect it?

It'll be fine I reckon, you just need to get a modem that works with the service and your Mac. As for firewalls you should be fine, keep your OSX up to date and turn on the firewall options in the Sharing control panel. There aren't very many script kiddies out there who would know what to do with OSX anyway..

I'm using an iBook running OS X 10.2 on Eircom's I-Stream ADSL and it works fine. I'm using an ethernet ADSL modem.

I'd suggest staying away from any USB DSL modems because their drivers may not be available for OS X. With the ethernet ADSL modem I just plug it into the network port on the iBook and setup a PPPoE connection in OS X. Of course you could also get an ADSL router, you wouldn't need to use PPPoE in OS X then.

Yeah if you go with the Ethernet modem you can't go wrong it's only a matter of putting in the network settings and telling it to use the Ethernet connection...

I'm sure the engineer will work it out if they're used to doing it under Windows same general principals just a different layout.

I had the iStream trial a while back - got the ethernet modem which was fine. I ran into problems with the software eircom provides (OS 9 only) - whatever extensions they had with it crashed a vanilla install of 9.2.2 which wasn't too impressive.

However, OS X was simple to set up - just set up PPPoE on Ethernet config in the Network System Preference and you're flying - no additional software required.

Plus the pings from the Ethernet are better than the USB and you can hook it into a router/Airport Base Station easier so I'd go for that if I were you.

And all you need the engineer to do is plug the modem into the wall and get the basic signal to the Modem - you should be able to take care of the rest (well - once he/she has given you the IP address settings that is!) :D

Apple Ireland recommend (and sell) the D-Link 300G+ ethernet DSL modem. I'm using this with Eircom's DSL product and an Airport. You can get the modem cheaper from Amazon in the UK (even with postage added in) than through Apple.
