There has been a lot of information put into Boards from many different people with many different viewpoints. Has any of it been actually helpful at all?

Feel free to express yourself, but please be diplomatic and kind.

Yes. I've learned that contrary to popular belief, azezil on IRC and azezil in real life are actually the same person. Although, humping people's ears requires a tad more flexibility than he imagined :D

I have learned a lot from Boards. Among the things I have learned are the following:
    • No matter what sort of teenage angst bullsh1t it seems to me, it's important to the poster
    • Most nerd posters suffer from cognitive dissonance in trying to ratify their personal sexual experience, which involves so much porn, and the sudden appearance of a panting 16 year old girl who's pouting at them as though she gives blowjobs for a living and who is, in fact, a complete virgin (translates: boardsters don't get out enought)
    • There are people out there who really believe that 'bored now' is an intelligent response when you have no retort for a well founded argument. That works for vampire Willow. That does not work for 'PJ O'Reilly, boardster and 15 year old with an attitude problem'.
    • There is a large number of gay posters on boards. I'm not trying to make this point out to be a bad thing, it just interests me that boards.ie has managed to successfully host a gay-friendly environment that is tolerated by other users in an open-minded fashion. (Perhaps that's just good moderatorship).
    • There are people to whom boards has become a mini-civilisation, and they use this model of mankind to influence all of their major decision making.
    • There are people who take life far too seriously.
    • There is safety in anonimity.
    • Never underestimate the lack of knowledge a sixteen year old has about sex.
    • Never underestimate the knowledge that same sixteen year old has about beer.
    • DeVore is a man who threw a snowball and watched the ensuing avalanche engulf three small villages and a herd of goats who, he is worried, may have been tended by Heidi...
    • You cannot stay away from boards.ie for longer than three months.
    • There is a point after which all online societies will split into factions.
    • Boards.ie would be the greatest place to test the next wannabe fashion fad - proof: atari jaguar, kittencake, ban castor troy, ninjas...

I have learned many, many things about life from Boards.ie. The greatest thing I have learned is that it is entirely possible for me to waste hours of my life engaging in something that my mother, at my age, never would have dreamed possible. I am part of history in the making.

    Ahhh, long live spam.

    :)

And I have learned to love myself more for it! Thank you boards!

    Lots.

Most importantly that talk works, this is an entirely text based society, which works incredibly well with little or no bias, and for me it proves that the internet is a good thing, it is one of the few places where you can get to know someone incredibly well and then meet them and have them turn out to be gay/coloured/etc. It's fantastic.

Jesus MAJD, way to nail it!
DeVore is a man who threw a snowball and watched the ensuing avalanche engulf three small villages and a herd of goats who, he is worried, may have been tended by Heidi...

Believe it or not, I was just in the middle of writing a short blog on my feelings about this... I am going to reference it because its smarter then what I wrote :)

Ok, my turn ... though I seriously doubt I can top Majd.
Obviously I've a slightly different vantage point from others here, I'll try and draw on that....
    • I've learned that no matter what decision you make some (quite possibly a lot of) people are going to be unhappy. You might as well give yourself a head start and make sure that at least you're happy with your own decision.
    • You cant please all of the people some of the time. You cant please some of the people all of the time. That whole saying is a total lie! :) If you please some of the people some of the time, you're doing exceptionally well.
    • I'm not as clever as the combined brainpower of Boards. They often know better then I do and asking for advice/help isnt a sign of weakness, its a sign of strength.
    • Some people are real assholes.
    • Some people hate to see something being built unless if they arent getting kudos for it. They'd rather see you fail and are miffed if you, unreasonably, dont.
    • There are a lot of strange people out there. And I like most of them :)
    • I dont know what I'm doing.
    • That is a good thing.
    • Some people will amaze you, if you just let them.
    • If you give something away, you may or may not get rewards back tenfold. You should understand this when you give it and give it anyway.
    • control is an illusion. The sooner you realise the steering mechanism isnt connected to the wheels the sooner you'll enjoy the ride.
    • dont be afraid to speak up and say your piece, if you are civil you may very well find a lot of people who agree with you, to your surprise.
    • communication is power. Boards.ie is a vulgar display of that power.
    • You cant care about what people think about you. If you do you miss all the best bits of this kooky crazy life and they are all the bits worth living.
    • Running an online community is feckin' hard!

    DeV.

Is that not obvious from *real* life anyway Dev?

I'm not nitpicking just I think you'd have picked up on those points w/out Boards.

No, to be honest I never really experienced it like that before. I mean, I kinda thought there was a "right answer" that would make everyone happy but there isnt and you can go nuts trying to find it.

    I've learned a lot from Boards.ie.

It has inspired and helped me with the projects for both my diploma and degree years and various college assignments. DeV even let me interview him via email for part of an assignment a while ago! :)

On top of that Boards has exposed me to many new opinions and that can't be bad.

I have learned a lot about peoples sexuality, which come to think of it is quiet scary how people seem to come out on this before to themselves. (

I'm scared, someone ring my mammy, I might catch gay :

I've learned that if you read the right boards you can learn somethingworht knowing, pity I don't read the right boards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,446 ✭✭✭✭amp

I've learned that it's possible to have several different personalities and remain mostly sane. Also I find that places that normally considered seperate can blend into each other.

I've learned a lot about html, UBB code, IRC script0ring and that it is entirely possibly to break my arse laughing at something on the screen.

I've learned that people use boards for different things, some talk to their mates, organise clans, sell or buy things. Some come for advice. Some come to boost their own fragile egos by looking down their noses at people they perceive as inferior, slag them off and then rationalise it as "being for there own good" or that "hey it's just a website, it's not like these people are real or anything"

I've learned about different types of humour. There's wit, which is usually combined with sarcasm. There's good natured slagging. There's in-jokes. There's very crude shock humour, where people attack weaker prey, make other people laugh at their expense.

I've learned that everybody is incredibly insecure, it's just that some people are better at hiding it than others.

I've also learned numerous other skills, facts, and things, but the most important is that 100's if not thousands of different people can come together on a media that is pure text, where body language does not exist, where voice tone cannot be judged and still, despite these handicaps, create a genuine sense of community.

/me presses Submit Reply with moistening eyes

Edit - Things to learn: Do a list properly, spell considered with 2 e's

Without a doubt I have learned loads from Boards.ie. Boards has almost become as obsession with me to such an extent that I barely ever wonder out into the WWW. I usually just stay at home on boards when I crank up my 56K modem.

I have used boards to fix my PC, try to start my own business, buy a new car - and sell my old one. To buy and sell half my possessions, to even to get rid of the fly's in my attic !!!! :D:D

In my opinion boards is a great place to ask questions, chat about life and the world and to have a good laugh. And IMO the greatest thing since sliced bread. But that’s just my opinion.

I've learned lots from boards. I took an interest in politics and someone told me about boards. Instead of looking at the usual news websites, boards posters have given some good links to alternative articles and I've book marked alot of the sources for future references. Personal issues is good to its both entertaining and interesting as it gives male/female views on topics that you wouldn't really ask people in general conversation.

since im a n00b here and all i avent been ere long enough, but this place seems a Hell of a lot better than other boards ive been on.
Some msg boards are full of ppl dat want to be a$$holes. (mainly american boards) really, ive been on and modded a few boards and the ignorance of some ppl i unreal

The Main thing i learned from Boards.ie is that Irish people have a better sense of humour than others. Argue wit me on dat but i think-judging from experience on other boards- that its true.

I like many others have also learned to be a NINJA! :ninja:...life skills i tells ya.

cos of boards I've had some good times, some ****ty times, and some great times :)

I have learned to keep my wits about me :).

Also that people who are extrememly immature and have crude and/or stupid humour can rise through the ranks... somehow.

I have learned to reference anything and everything i post, and to have a back up arguement against any slander I may recieve from a post or thread I start.

Admins are generally speaking normal people, and have gained a huge amount of respect over the years, so much so that they can engage in what would otherwise be a very risky venture, ie MegaLAN.

Talking to someone on boards and irc is QUITE different to talking to them in real life most of the time. Its like you're meeting a completely new person.

I really like the word "Faction" and believe that the "Community" boards should be renamed "Factions".

Segregation of posters is good, It allows you to have a perspective on why their views are the way they are. IE, where they post most frequently.

And lastly, Ninjas are cool and should be respected by all because "They might flip out and kill everyone".

Ok, spose I better post some real lesson I've learned......
    • Loud people can be intelligent too
    • No-one is ever the sum of their posts
    • No matter what someone writes on boards.ie, your opinion of them will almost always change when you meet them in real life
    • No matter what solution you come up with, one person or a group of people will always come up with a better one
    • It possible to become good friends with someone whom you've never even talked to
    • Galway people are insane

I've learned not to judge people by first impressions, becasue given time and a relevent topic a person can prove to you there abnormal intelligence and absurd stupidity.
I have also realised that I need to work on my spellings and that it's not something to be ashamed of just something that needs improvment.
Boards has also helped me do projects, sell stuff, buy stuff and loose respect for good honest human beings whoum I though I knew. (RE: picture of mordth on hotornot)

ooh ooh and how about the potm be derived from the number of stars given to each post! or maybe not number of stars but number of people giving a thread 5 stars maybe.

    What I’ve learnt about boards.ie

      • MAJD is a chick/woman/not a guy. I personally was amazed. • When people meet me from boards they go, you’re Boston, or in smiles case “I expected a filthy old man” • You can basically say what ever you want and not get banned for it • Kiddies think they can intimidate you with haxor threats and the line of, “if I ever meet you” • People threat you differently if they can put a name to a face. • Bard is very anal and I’m a pain the ass • People will piss you off just to get a reaction. • Allot of computer related stuff, and allot more about networks. • Dispite numerious threats on my well being, people here are decent. • Azeil is really light and is easy to lift over four foot in the air. • Amp reminds me or a younger, less attractive Britney spares. • People don’t like it when you bombard them with sarcastic remarks like a pimped up 12 years old school girl from Detroit. • Gordon is very scary. • Dustaz doesn’t like to be called a turkey and Gerry I basically avoid because he knows more about computers then I and I don’t like to admit it. • You can get by on boards with absolutely no typing skills what so ever, and most people won’t notice. (Except bard) • Just because you think you know someone on the net, that doesn’t mean that’s them in real life, often you only see one side of somebody. • That I am by far the most interesting member, every to grace boards.ie, you know you all love me. • Devore, for everything is a pretty fair and decent guy, as are the other admins, though in three years I’ve only ever been in contact with three of the admins, and only banned by two. • Finally, most people will believe and hear brained scheme me and ******* come up with.

    1. Some of the soundest people on boards post very little
    2. There is no way of determening if someone is sound by looking at their posts[1]
    3. No matter how many posts you have, or what forum you mod, Feb 98 reg date can't be achieved unless you're one of the originals
    4. Not that that matters a damn
    5. Boards is not anonymous, we will find you (even without an IP)
    6. Be careful what you say, the search function will come back to haunt you.
    7. I like beer.

    What I've learned from boards
    • That everyone is entitled to their opinion and that just repeating your take on things over and over again isn't going to get you anywhere.
    • In a situation where someone refuses to accept your take on things its best to agree to disagree.
    • How to build your own computer thanks gerry, theniggy and co.
    • You have to give a little to get a little when fitting into a community.
    • Never trust anything *******/boston say no matter what is it.
    • From now on whenever I want to feel smarty pants I'll use a list.
