I'd say that dishonesty is definitelt a bad policy, and that honesty is a good policy. However, the best policy IMVHO is 'honesty laced with the occasional diplomatic wriggling out of an unpalatable answer'.... ;)

    eg
If the answer to a question will emotionally hurt the asker, then you "white lie" a little bit or plead ignorance

Honesty is the best policy and should always be employed where you can. But now and again a white lie has to be told.

    Honesty all the way.
May hurt feelings with the truth but its better to be said than unsaid and if you lie and are found out you become untrustworthy better to be trusted and truthful than a liar.

Lets say you're going to score with an older bird and she asks what age you are. Do you a) say you're 19 and go home alone or b) say you're 23 and get with the bang bang.

honesty is the best policy but there are times when a little lie might be needed to defuse a situation

If the odd white lie makes a person feel better than whats wrong with that?

    for example.

girlfriend asks on a skimpy dress "does this make me look fat?"

You think she looks slutty are you going to HONESTLY tell her

    "You look like a slut?"

Isnt that what we are talking about when you guys mean honesty?

    depends on the situation.

i.e if you happened to get drunk and 'accidently' cheat on your gf then i would go for 'no'

the other day I was standing outside a shop throwing some papers in a bin and a delivery guy dropped a wallett out of his back pocket with a 20 quid note plainly sticking out the top, I picked it up and followed him in to the shop, tapped him on the shoulder and said hey you dropped your wallett. He snatched it out of my hand and grunted something that was definitely not a thank you.

I really wish I had taken the pric*s money and gone and had a beer on him.

With hindsight I wish honesty wasnt the best policy.

of course everything is accidentle, these things do not happen on purpose, so there for you sometimes have to tell a little white lie:D
