    Guys,,

I'm having i-stream installed in the morning.... I have a modem allready...

Now, I know the micro-filter seperates the voice and data, so I'm thinking that they have robably allready enable my line at the exchange.....Can I connect now? How do I do it? I have all my login details....

Do you have the micro filter? if so what type is it. I would say it is probably already enabled as when I had it installed I was the chaps first call at 8am and he hadn't been to the exchange that morning I think it is done some days before the install. Anyway the modem synced as soon as it was plugged in and he didn't call anybody as he was working.

Got mine installed today too, (line tested and ordered two weeks ago)

About 8.30 got a call to say that they were going to work on the line in the exchange and the phone would be off for about an hour,

Engineer turned up about 10.30 (really good guy very knowledgeable) took out the ISDN box etc..

he then was cool enough to run a line in from the hall to the study and put a splitter box on the wall beside the desk (never seen these before only the plug in one)

he said had i ordered a modem?? he said didnt have to get one from Eircom and they have cheap ones in PC World but he carried the various Eircom ones in the Van. I had already decided to get the Eircon 4 port one so i took that.

He sat down and configed my Win XP box and Apple Powerbook.

Eircom are supposed to sent you out a CD and install instructions but he said most people havent got them yet....

Anyway I have no complaints about my new 1meg connection :):D

I haven't got a microfilter.... Doesn't that just separate voice and data... I thought if you jacked into the wall socket you didn't need the microfilter, you just couldn't make calls...

    Haha.

Either of you getting the RADSL, ~€60 package no?

Anyway, if you have all the equipment, try downloading RASPPPOE and see if you can connect using that. It's better than eircom's own software.

Edit, Oops, thought he said he had the filter.

James is correct. If you don't want to use any phones on your ADSL enabled phone line you don't have to use any microfilters. The filters are just for when you want to share the line with the phone, because phones send out and receive signals that will make your DSL modem unsync.

If you've had your phoneline ADSL enabled just unplug every phone in the house from that phoneline, plug your DSL modem straight into the phoneline and it should sync up.

If you also want to use a phone at the same time then just plug a splitter (any normal splitter you can buy down in Tesco or whatever) into your phone connection, plug your DSL modem into one side of the splitter and plug your phone (with microfilter attached) into the other side of the splitter.

I've also got the Eircom self-install ADSL package and it works fine like that.

Strange my modem Zyxel prestige 643 won't sync unless I plug it in to the filter socket it won't even work on the master socket which is before the filter but with nothing plugged into it. Odd one:confused: but I concede it is entirely possible I was wrong just going on what I have available to me. Thanks for the info Son of Blam it is Interesting to know.

So if i didnt want to be bothered with self install costs, i could just pay the connection fee and use the adsl adapter? (if i dont want a seperate phone connection) ?

Have a weather station?, why not join the Ireland Weather Network - http://irelandweather.eu/

We had the line enabled here about 3 days ago, the engineer is coming out next tuesday morning. "For what " I ask the eircom rep, and he says "to install adsl". so i so, well theres no need, i setup the router with the right details etc and low and behold
BOOM we have adsl :-), guy on the phone not very happy ... but sure what can I do, we are an IT company and we have installed about 15 different routers at this stage for adsl so we know what we are doing ...

Incidently we don't have the filter here, the router is plugged right into the wall.

    Eggcellent :)

This thing about ADSl working without a filter has peaked my interest so I decided to do a little experimenting to see if it would work for me without a filiter. Here is what I found the reson I couldnt get sync without the filter was that the line was going to Phonewatch first which makes sense having installed the entire phone system in the first place I had a good idea about what way everything was setup but it was wired wrong by the guy who put in DSl he should have connected Phonewatch to the [al] -[al] terminals on the splitter socket and removed the resistors but he just left it going through the alarm and then to the splitter. I rewired it the correct way and out of interest checked if the modem would sync up if it had sole access to the exchange line and low and behold it did. SO thats that question answered and I have learned something new today:) :):)

roneill that is exactly what i want to do in my home
i have a pc running xp and upstairs my dad has his power book(mac)

does that mean u have a network in ur house with both of them connected to the adsl modem(which might be directly connected to one of the computers) and both can access the internet at the same time or is this too good to be true
i thought there would be compatibility issues with pc/mac network

u got the ethernet modem right??

how much did it cost overall and would it be easy to install it ur self if u got some advice!!

    cheers!!

Yeah that's another good point actually. People who have alarms connected to their phone systems are probably going to have a few problems with the new self install ADSL product because their phonewatch (or whatever it is) will usually be wired into the phoneline at or before the main socket where they'll be plugging their DSL into, and that'll mess with the modem sync.

I read some article ages ago (lost the link) about a guy who had a self install DSL connection in the states and he had to re-wire a load of stuff around his phone alarm to get it working. I wouldn't have a clue how to re-wire that kind of stuff.
