Does music rule our lives too much?

Why is it that because I listen to rock, it seems to disqualify me in peoples' minds from liking football, or indeed any team sport? Why is it that the only sport that it seems is acceptable is skating? What d**k decided to make this unwritten law, and why am i and others like me ridiculed for liking football??

    Eh?

So, right, what you're saying is, someone ridiculed you for liking football and listening to rock?

how does this relate to music ruling lives too much?

I don't remember being handed an application form with 'If you apply to like music type B, you cannot have an interest in Sport C or program A , but if you listen to Music type C, you may ....' and so on.

People just like different stuff. Its the way it is.

Its funny though. Everyone reacts that way with me, when they find out what I do for a living, they imagine I should work in a petrol station or be on the dole or something, they just can't associate listening to the music I do and wearing a suit and heels to work every day.....

I get it as well when they find out I like cars and buy them and do them up, this is not either 'girly' OR 'metal', apparently.

Just smirk, shrug, raise your eyebrows and say 'yeah, well...'.

You can blame all those kids outside the Central Bank for people assuming skating is your sport of choice. You should start a game of football there instead, that I would pay money to see.

Ahaha just realised I quoted someone who has this attitude in my sig!!

i also do not see the need for a poll, nor do i see how its connected to what the topic is about. but what i say is that perhaps you are ridiculed because you look like such a tool? :D

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 16,698 Mod ✭✭✭✭Silverfish

Yeah, I didn't understand that poll and subsequent post either.

Does he mean 'music rules our lives too much, I shouldn't play football if I listen to rock' or does he mean 'Music rules THEIR lives because they don't think I should play football if I listen to rock'?

I'm confused. I'm going to go lie down for a while, threads that make no sense give me tension headaches.

It doesn't rule your life, but it may alter your view of people, or peoples view of you. People getting beaten up for liking Metal by Dance heads. stuff like that.

people sterotype against people depending on the type of music they listen to but it does not in anyway rule our lives.

Please, allow me to elaborate on and explain my point. I wrote that at half one in the morning, i was tired, i couldn't word it properly. What i mean is, why is it that our choice of music should influence other things like favourite sports, hobbies, clothes, etc.? When you like for example, rock, why do people think you have to wear hoodies, skate and hate football. If you like dance, people assume you hate skating, wear new styles in clothes. It is to do with stereotyping, but it is unfortunately true a lot of the time.

I think it rules our lives in that it influences other things that we do. I heard someone being called "gay" t'other day, coz he said he was going to play football.
You can blame all those kids outside the Central Bank for people assuming skating is your sport of choice. You should start a game of football there instead, that I would pay money to see.
I do blame them. They made people think that skating is the most popular "rock" sport.
perhaps you are ridiculed because you look like such a tool?
Darren, you should know about this, you like, well, alternative music and like football as well. And don't call me a tool.

Maybe it just rules your life?
What you are saying is pretty stupid. Maybe you're a tad paranoid, maybe you just suck at football. ;)

Yeah... but that is only the minority of the people who listen to dance. I know people that are into dance and they ain't scumbags in any way. They just enjoy themselves.

I do suck at football, that is no secret, but i don't see any relevance in that statement to what i said earlier. Music doesn't rule my life, i don't dress like a tosser just because of the music i like, i don't have any preference to any "rock sport", I just like the music. Again everybody misses the point. Allow me to put it in layman's terms:
Dance- Caps, trendy clothes, cars etc.
    Rock- Hoodies, skating etc.

IMO, there is too much else to go with the music, the entire scene, dress code, behavioural things, opinions etc.

I agree with hells angels, it shouldn't be about what you wear, just what type of music you are into.

i think the point that axe is trying to make is that the majority of people in our school that like dance music do conform to the stereotypes (eg, are tossers), and i have been in many an arguement and even a detention (for kicking some dicks ass) because people slag me for liking rock. me and my friends have had the following things shouted at us:

    "you suck marilyn mansons penis"
    "go worship satan."
    "you devil worshippers"
    "american wannabees"
    "its the goth gang"
    "grungers"
    "go wash your hair"
    "get your hair cut"
    "like, yeh, totally"

the majority of these are shouted in a stereotyped californian accent.

this is anoying to say the least, however any attempts to point out that dance music has been around for about 20 years while rock has been out around, o, say, 50 years. and any attepmts to point out ANY faults i find in dance music are just shouted down.
    rant over.

    DISCLAIMER:
Conor O' Doherty doesnt condone dance music, he just doesnt like it. anyone who wants to listen to dance music, go ahead. just dont tell me how "gay" rock music is. peace out friends.

I always thought hoodies was a hip-hop thing tbh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 92 ✭✭Gringo

I think the steretypes are sad! think people relate Metal and Rock with the skate monkeys in temple bar to! those litle 13year old w*nkers have given true metal and Rock fans a bad image by wearing they're hoodies with slipknot and junk!

"grunger" in a californian accent oh the irony meh grunger isn't much of a slag is it?

lol, actually i do see it now. good one mate.
grunger isn't much of a slag is it?
    well, when
    a) you arent into grunge music, and
    b) theyre idea of grunge is 'puddle of mud' and a spiky bracelet.
    ****.
o contraire peter, your resemblance to a tool is uncanny.

What has the original question got to do with rock/metal as opposed to music in general?
Does music rule our lives too much? in what way? dress? money? attitude?

Anyway the "general" answer is no unless:

    a) you're asking the bank manager for a loan to buy one of these http://www.egglestonworks.com/ivy.htm

    b) you kill someone because the voices in the music told you to.

    c) you've asked your girlfriend to move out so you can fit more albums in the room.

Ok I take everyone's point, I worded the title of the thread wrongly, I am most humbly sorry. It is not that music rules our lives but rather that people take stereotypes too seriously. I think that the big fairy (Superconor) explained it best with his examples of how mcsorley and his wankerish friends go on and the highly bizarre things they shout.

I do however stand by most of my earlier points regarding sport and other such activities.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 351 ✭✭Darkillion

axe does indeed suck at football

superconor - kicked his ass? i doubt it. who was this incredibly weak person?

as for all the other stuff, i get it a bit too, dont really care, most people are dead on, and those that arent, who carews

people make fun of me for bein punk even metallers who don't realise that without punk bands like slayer wouldn't exist...why should it bother me tho because someone else's views on music are different to mine?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,945 ✭✭✭D-Generate

According to the inlay card of New Order's - International album, "Without New Order, rockers would still be listening to rock music" and "True Punks do Dance Music"

And this is where I come in to it, while I do have a great fondness of Rock/Alternative music, I also appreciate dance music like New Order/Prodigy/DJ Shadow. I choose to wear the "rock" clothes because it is what I feel more comfortable in, not to represent my taste in music.
I don't like the stereotyped fashion according to music, however this will remain until people choose to wear what they feel like wearing. I doubt those metallers in leather find it comfortable and instead wear it to show what their lifestyle is.

Anyhew my point was, would someone be so kind as to lend me 57 yo-yos to buy the Limited Edition version of New Order's Retro box-set :D

Sorry D-Gen, but a nice leather jacket is very comfortable.
I've also got a nice pair of leather biker trousers, and they're fantastically comfy.

Ah good a leatherman (notice word choice :))
Time to ask you some questions.

Firstly cause I have allways wondered : How could you wear them on hot days????

    Now the serious questions

1, Do you choose to wear leather because you look good?
2, Do you choose to dress that way because you want to feel different?
3, Do you dress to represent your taste in music?
4, Did you allways dress like that or did you change clothes taste when your musical tastes changed?

Oh and final question, you wouldn't have a lend of €57 for the New Order box-set? :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

I dont wear them on hot days, thanks D-Gen.
That would be a bit thick.

But if you're really interested, I'm wearing a pair of urban combats, and a white short-sleeve T-shirt. I'm in cabin 12, bring peanut butter. ;)

    As for the serious questions...

    1. I can look good in a lot of things, jeans and t-shirt, a suit, and yes, leather. I also, I look good in peanut butter. ;)

    2. I dont think there's anything unusual or different about anything I wear, so no.

    3. That's what band T-shirts are for.

    4. I dont wear leather every single day, its actually a rarity for me these days. I also got my current leather jacket many years ago, wasn't particularly into anything at the time, it just looked and felt very nifty. Like peanut butter.

    5. NO! Bugger off, you smarmy git! Get a Job, ya bum! :p

On the subject of clothes though, I'm dying to get a pair of Rave pants from www.cyberdog.net they look so god damn funky! :ninja:

Oh and about that peanut butter ;)

angelwhore- cyber pants are way cooler lookin than rave pants... rave pants aren't without there charm tho...

I don't think it's the music which makes people ridicule you. It's the clothes. Generally people who wear grunger clothes lke rock music while tracksuit ppl listen to pop ****. That is also an unwritten law...
