Anyone else receiving BBC in the wrong aspect ratio, i.e. the image looks all stretched vertically?

so the deflector people haven't decided to broadcast in 16:9. i was actually excited at the prospect of widescreen BBC1 through the aerial like it is now

I've a widescreen set and I've noticed RTE are showing some shows anamorpically ('stretched vertically' :) ) too. They show the X-Files that way and I think the main evening news too? I think TOTP2 on BBC2 is anamporphic as well. Has anyone else noticed any other shows being shown this way lately?

Im pretty sure thats an RTE fùckup. RTE broadcast nearly everything in 14:9 now (4:3 Vs 16:9 compromise format). Anything that is made here, be it Commercial or Progamming material is delivered to them anamorphically. When you see a program stretched its usually a case of someone in MCR forgetting to flip the switch to convert the aspect ratio.

Could be wrong, this type of thing confuses the hell out of me (and er, its part of my job to know it. Maybe i should apply for a job in RTE :) )

RTÉ's idea of widescreen is 4:3 letterboxed into 16:9 with the black bars top and bottom. BBC2 do this with 24 on analogue

Not really. 24 is 16:9. Since everyone doesnt have widescreen tvs, RTE broadcast a 4:3 (probably a 14:9) version of it with the black bars top and bottom.

When everyone moves to widescreen, hopefully every station will start broadcasting anamorphically so that we can get the full quality.

RTE sometimes stretch things vertically when they make a tralier for a film but then show the film in pan&scan or widescreen with the correct proportions.

At least they're not showing films with an off-white bar top & bottom instead of black bars, like they were doing a year or two ago.

i didn't mean to say that all programmes they get are given the same treatment.

24 on RTÉ is broadcast in 4:3
    Eastenders is broadcast is 14:9
ER is/was shown 16:9 with black bars top and bottom so everyone got the w/s effect

all the programmes i mantioned are available in w/s. if only RTÉ could use w/s switching on the digital platforms, but apparently the BCI don't allow this
