fairly old pedal that i got as part of a deal

when tap your foot down to make the effect there is a sort of scratching sound that is very loud.

could it be the lead connections or loose wire inside.

    cheers

Sounds like the pot is dirty, or there is an old battery in it.
Of course if the leads are messed up, this could happen too.

If you look under the area where the pedal goes down, the switch that turns the wah on is there, this should be cleaned. Actually I was wrong to call this a pot (potentiometer), I just have a habit of doing it.

The actual variable resistor that controls the effect could be dodgy either.

    You said switch.

I had the same issue with my CryBaby after not using it for years. I changed the battery and cleaned all of the dust out of the compartment and it was about 90% solved.
