I've heard several versions of what to do and what not to do.
One involved not having an uplink cable longer then 3foot.

I might also be up for doing port trunking aswell.....

Anyone got any tips/ideas/random synaptic responses?

Use a crossover tho because its switch-switch or press the uplink button and plug into the uplink port.
As for the length less than 100Meters as is the standard sounds good to me.
Also try to set the 2 ports to 100Full duplex and not auto-negotiating.
