So you think you're smart eh?

A guy put these to me last night. Brain teasers. Which I thought were good actually.

So have a go and if you have seen any of them before don't go answering and pretending that you're really smart and stuff... Let the others have a go...

I'll rate them easy to hard:

A market seller on Camden Street has 7 apples.

A customer comes to him and asks him for half of his stock of apples and a half an apple.

The second customer again asks him for half of his stock of apples and a half an apple.

And the third also asks him for half of his stock of apples and a half an apple.

At his stage he is out of apples and he never once had to harm even one apple.

    Explain.

One day, while hillwalking in Donegal, 4 men are ambushed by a native tribe of ferocious cannabils. They are captured and, the leader, having a north Donegal sense of humour, decides that he will give them one chance to prove themselves and be released before being eaten.

So he buries them in the ground nearly up to their shoulders as is shown in my superb 'paint' illustration below.

    Sandpeople.jpg

Now, the thing sticking out of the ground before the man furthest left is a wooden wall. (ie. they cant see through it.) They each have a hat put on them as is shown and are told that there are 2 black hats and 2 white hats in total.

They are then given 5 minutes for one person to shout out what colour hat he has on his head, and explain how he knows, before being eaten.

They cannot communicate with each other in any way and their arms are buried. They can only see straight in front of them.

What man can definitely shout out what colour hat he is wearing and why?

Using the mathematical symbols below, arrange each column as a sum that when equated, totals to 3.

[edit] Ok the symbols won't show in the font so you'll have to make do! [/edit]

    Plus
    Minus
    Multiplied by
    Divided by
    Brackets
    Decimal place
    Squared
    Squared Root

    For example:

    15 15 10 =3 would be (15+15) / 10=3 or (1.5+1.5) x 1.0 = 3

    Easy!

    Here you go: Symbols:

    1 1 1 =3

    2 2 2 =3

    3 3 3 =3

    4 4 4 =3

    5 5 5 =3

    6 6 6 =3

    7 7 7 =3

    8 8 8 =3

    9 9 9 =3

    10 10 10 =3

Put the symbols wherever you like and as many as you like as long as you come up with 3 as your answer for every one of the ten equasions. Good Luck!

They are fairly difficult but I love this sort of carry on. To let you know how I did, I got the first one straight away, the second after about 3 minutes and the third took me about 30 mins, but I was finished work at that stage so I'm still left with the 7's one which I haven't got yet. Apparently the guy who gave me them got the third one in 7 minutes but I don't believe him. :p

    So off you go.

    Have fun!

    1 1 1 =3
    1 + 1 + 1 = 3

    2 2 2 =3
    (2 / 2) + 2 = 3

    3 3 3 =3
    3 + 3 - 3 = 3

    4 4 4 =3
    4 - (4 / 4) = 3

    5 5 5 =3
    (5 * 0.5) + 0.5 = 3

    6 6 6 =3
    (6 * 0.6) - 0.6 = 3

    7 7 7 =3
    (7 / 0.7) - 7 = 3

    8 8 8 =3
    sqrt( (8 / 8) + 8) = 3

    9 9 9 =3
    sqrt(9) + sqrt(9) - sqrt(9) = 3

    10 10 10 =3
    1.0 + 1.0 + 1.0 = 3

    The first one is simple:
    Dealer has 7 apples
    Customer buys 3.5 of them and a 0.5 (4)

    Dealer has 3 apples
Customer buys 1.5 of them and 0.5 (2)

    Dealer has 1 apple
Customer buys 0.5 of it and 0.5 (1)

    Dealer has no apples

    The second one:

The man furthest away at the back is asked to guess first, he can see the men in front of him are wearing 1 black hat and 1 white hat. So he will hesitate to make a guess.. when the second man in realises that the third is unsure what hat he's wearing, he realises him and the man closest to the wall must be wearing different colour hats..
So now 2 realises his hat must be different than the first man and guesses it's black

'the first ones easy' - my ass. Its blatent some people on these boards dont smoke or drink. Its boggled my mind for the last 10 minutes.

    Damn you clown man.

    i have one ¬_¬

    muhahahaahah

    riddle

A man has to cross a bridge which is 2 miles long and if he was to run it it would take 150 seconds to cross it (pritty fast runner).
In the middle of the bridge there is a booth containing a guard, the guard comes out every 75 seconds without fail!
There is no way under/over/around the bridge the only way is using the path across. No cars, bikes, plains, boats, hellicopters are allowed to go over/under/on the bridge, only people on foot.

The man has to get across, but if the guard sees him when he comes out, he will tell him to get back to his side of it or he will shoot and kill him. How does he get across without getting killed?

    ¬_¬

only intended for Clownman, if you know it please keep it shut

He wouldn't have had to 'harm' (slice) any of the apples using the method Repli mentioned. His one sounds like the right answer to me?

    4+2+1=7
The whole numbers show that only whole apples are sold. None are sliced in any way.

From what I remember from this riddle the guy at the back can only see the man directly in front of him, not sure if it makes a difference though.

Yep repli got the first two right.

    Wahey! :D

Now I'm taking it that Pigman II got the last one and is decent enough not to post it. It's the hard one. So get it and then you've got them.

And then I might just have one more which is so bloody hard it's just stupid.

And maybe one or two more when I remember them.

And Mark I'll get back to you on that one when I don't have 8 cans in me after that fork-up on the rugby field. :p (I'll get it though!)

Red_ice i just looked at that again.

I'm ferggin pissed but i'll try it anyway.

He runs to the middle, waits for the gaurd to come out, runs back when he is told to, waits 35 seconds and runs the whole way across. Gaurd should be in the shack thing 35 seconds when he passes and won't come out for another 40. And if he runs 2 miles in 150 seconds he should be more than a half mile away by then!

    That any good to you?

How about he leggers is half-way across, then turns around. When the guard sees him he sends him back the way he assumes he came from, i.e. the direction he was originally heading.

I got question 1 and question 2 correct no problem. I'm not going to attempt question 3 unless I'm quite bored ;)
