Import Duties-ordering from the net

I was just wondering if anyone help me out on this one- a friend of mine asked me to use my credit card to buy him a guitar from internet site based in the USA. They do international orders and it would cost me €200 to buy (€140 and €60 shipping).
What i want to find out is about the likelihood of import duties/VAT being charged to me when i get it- are customs good at their job, or do they let some things go? Does anyone have any experience of this? And does anyone know what kind of charge could be levied?

    TIA

You won't get automatically hit with any import duties/VAT on your credit card. If Customs decide to apply such charges, you'll get a little note from AnPost or the delivering courier advising you to pay the charges before they'll deliver the product.

I think it's 4% import duty + 21% VAT. Most couriers will act as collection agent for Customs.
