Recommendations for a digitial photo printer?

I don't know if this is the right forum for this question, maybe it should be in Technology, but here goes anyway :)

In short, I want to be able to print my digital photos so that they resemble the prints you get from normal film. 6" x 4" is fine, I don't necessarily need bigger, though that might be nice.

I've done some Googling, and came across the Hi-Ti 630PS, which looks good. Conns Cameras' web site list it at €435, don't know if that's including VAT. US web sites have it at $250 or thereabouts, I came across one that ships internationally for $85, ends up approx €320.

This printer is a dye-sublimation printer, which does 4-pass printing, the fourth being a protective clear layer. There's others out there, like the Olympus P330 and P400, Canon also do some. The Olympus P400 is interesting, it does just smaller than 8" x 10", but does other sizes and layouts too.

So, any recommendations, and also suppliers if possible?

    Thanks,

    Ciarán.

I did, and I just did it again. I must be using the wrong terms to search for, because I haven't found anything specifically on which digital photo printer to use.

I am probably going to sound like a broken record to the regulars, but:

I would not recommend purchasing from the USA, due to the likelihood of being levied (by local carrier on behalf of Customs) with the VAT (21%) and importation duty (3%) on top of the purchase price.

I would not recommend Conn(man)'s Cameras either, as their prices are outrageous (to me).

    Try www.ny-camera.net in Germany
I use them a fair bit, and can highly recommend them.
    Prices are excellent.

dpreview have a printers and printing forum:

    com/forums/forum.asp?forum=1003&page=1

A search for the HiTi gives lots of positive feedback, so it sounds like you are onto a winner. I'm currently considering a Canon i950, they say 6 colour inkjets can do similar quality, bad points being running costs and having to setup the colours right (advantage is the versitility).

A word on price, http://www.hitishop.com/ (can't tell if the ship internationally, probably means they don't) has it for $130 so whatever you do dont pay $250!!

VAT isn't an issue for me, since I'm buying it through my company, so I can claim that back anyway, even if I bought it here.

Re the price on hitishop.com, the 630PS is there at $249.99, maybe you were looking at the 630PL? Plus anyway, they won't ship outside the US.

I've ordered the 630PS from adorama in the US, and it should be here by the end of the week. If anyone's interested I'll post up what I think of it once it arrives.

    Ciarán.

Sorry, that was the PL I was looking at. For anyone else reading difference is the PS does not require a PC, can read compactflash or smartmedia and do some image processing too. The PL must connect to a computer.

Please do post up your opinions on it!
