As the war in Iraq is unfolding... Im curious to know if other people are feeling the same...
I find myself looking forward to seeing more explosions and fire fights with the soilders, and find myself loosing track that in efect Im watching the killing and injuring of people, the TV companys have spent alot of time and effort into showing the war. will we soon be watching the live executions of people as evening entertainment

I wonder when they are going to release the Gulf War I and Gulf War II boxset.

I hear it's going to have loads of extras and behind the scenes footage. Perhaps a making of as well.

    Can't wait.

I hate the TV coverage. I can't tell if they are lying to me or not. I've began to ignore what i hear on the radio and Tv.

I mean Sky showed 3 wrecked buildings: A school, a musuem and a library. According to them! I don't believe a word of it.

I'm opposed the war but I really don't know enough about it. What I do know might be propaganda. But killing someone is illeagal isn't it? What about bombing their house? I really don't know...

Don't know which side to believe / trust all networks seem biased especially when the reporters are under coalition / iraqi restrictions on there output.....

Also Hate the way Sky news reports Good (??) advances e.g gaining ground , taking of areas as COALITION Advances however Bad (??) stuff like Syrian Bus incident and Shock / Awe Bombing as U.S incidents , surely these incidents are both Coalition incidents....

On a lighter note ... I reckon Saddam has a weather machine which he's using to halt advance on Baghdad , did anyone see the SandStorms / Rain... either that or Allahs helping him out ;)

I wonder would a weather machine be classed as a weopan of mass destruction hmmm ....

From the looks of things this one is a serious post from our friendly neighbourhood horndog!

He seems to be talking about the effects of TV and war. And our perception of the war because of the coverage. I think we feel removed and i agree we are glued to our sets. In work we have people streaming sky news live and upstairs in the canteen sky news is on all day and people sitting our standing around watching it.

I think that its sad that in this day and age some people seem to be regarding the war as entertainment because i think thats what the TV companys are turning it into.

At first i have to say that i found it interesting actually witnessing what was happening but now i can't help but feel sorry for anyone that is over there, dont get me wrong i think saddam should be took out but hate to see all the wrong people going down with him.

Guess thats human nature, cant wait for something to happen but when it does can we deal with it!!!

well i stoped looking at any news but i keep hearing about these large scale battles where 9 ppl are killed ... and thinking to myself that aint that many ..

like sadam has 50k hard core troops and so far from what ive heard today they might have between 100-700 killed in total

i dont seem to be phased by anything that ive heard . civ casualties are low from what ive also heard somthn like under 200 r there abouts . ff is also low at about 10 and there taking prisoners like wtf is with that .

i think society dosnt seem to know the true extent of what has happened and will never know its just like a movie and ull shrug it off once the adverts come on and u make the cup of tea and the slice of mildy done toast with butter mealted into it

people seem to forget that propaganda has always and will always be a huge factor in wars(ww2 for instance)......this is just the first televised war......and the media has not lied about the wars just for their benifet for the most part they are made lie by the warring nations in order to rise public support, i will admit that the tv stations care more about their ratings than what is actually happening out there.......i had originally thought of a point but ive forgotten it now and for rear of rambling ill leave it at that.............

Every time I turn on the TV, I find myself looking at the war in Iraq, or perhaps indeed the invasion of iraq would be a better term to use. I hear the latest invasion the US are planning is against Iran, maybe it's already listed in TV Guide, wohooooo.

At least the war didnt begin until now. Nobody wants to miss the new series of "The Sopranos" for coverage of the live Invasion. Apparently this year all the Networks have been leading up into the really big show: "Live From Baghdad, Episode 2."

Many say the 'coalition' is invading Iraq to fight terrorism, others contend it's all about oil. I, for one, feel we're doing it as a natural extension of two crazy phenomena of our, dare I call it, culture. Greed and power.

I can remember back when I was a child, TV shows were all about fantasy. "Fantasy Island", "My Favorite Martian," etc, you get the picture. Nothing on TV was real, which made any war shown on the nightly news seem all the more scarry and all the more real. One minute Mork and Mindy were turning some guy into a chicken, the next minute there was an invasion of some country. It made for very clear delineation between the unreal and the real, a delineation that doesnt seem to be there for most today.

Have you noticed that during the past 10 years or so, TV, long considered the true opiate of the people, has slid further from the silly unreal into the grosly real, like "Cops," "Big Brother" "Fear Factor," "Pop Idol," shows filled with real people (other wise known as perpetrators), crazy people (other wise known as contestants), and funny dysfunctional people (otherwise known as the Osbournes). Whats next "Murder for Money" although some would argure that Mr Bush has that one in the bag already.

Then there are the never-ending talk shows making there way over here, with sleazy people like Jerry Springer rambling on about bull****. A whole generation has grown up watching these programs. To them, reality is fantasy. To them, fantasy is reality. To them, this war with Iraq is probably just another cool show to watch with bombings, pathos, and drama. They have the theme music, the newscasters commenting on the horrors of war while looking fabulous. The propaganda being continiously churned out through their tv sets and frightening them into duct taping their windows and staying inside while they wait for the next 'attack' in the 'War against terror'. It all just like a big TV special, a big 'Sky Fest' in the sky everynight. Scary **** indeed.

All the TV channels no doubt have shows in the works that will capitalize on the war with Iraq. "The Bachelorette in Baghdad" (she hands a rose to Hussein, and he goes!), "GI Joe the Millionaire" (he gives worthless stock options to the enemy - they feel our pain), "Star Search and Destroy" (amateurs compete to sing on a USA tour).

Only it isn't a TV show, we have to remember it's a ****ing war. Lives are being lost, children are being orphaned. Real lives, not Game Boy lives. Real damage is being done here, not X-Box damage. Of course TV is there to record it all, to interview bereaved families with a close-up of tears, to make it all seem like another soap opera episode. Maybe they should call it "As the World Explodes" Or just maybe, and heres a crazy thought, they could have a last-minute rewrite where, instead of killing their own troops and the 'enemy', we come up with an alternative ending - or rather beginning for them. We stop talking war, we start thinking peace.

It's not much of a show for prime-time TV but it does have a catchy title. We could call it "The Bold and the Beautiful" or better still " A future for our children"

    Beautifully put Enigma...

Bravo too to Horndog - great topic - and I find myself in the same situation as you, morbidly facsinated with explosions and killing and exciting tv. Slowing down as you pass the car wreck... I think it's in all of us, and is symptomatic of the way society has gone. The bull**** that's on TV all the time, the inane manner in which 'the news' (or some guys idea of what constitutes news) is presented can only desensitise us to the pain of others. War and death and pain and suffering is the new rock'n'roll. Entertainment for an ammoral society, and the very idiots that perpetrate it (tv and media people and their mouth agape audience) are the first to condemn the direction society has taken....

    What a pack of twats.
